Help making set symbols for Magic the Gathering sets

Could you instruct me how to get started in making the set symbols for the Magic expansions? It looks like the majority of the files are .svg but that's not a photoshop extension. Leitmotiv (talk) 17:52, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

My method used two professional-grade pieces of software: Rhino and Adobe Illustrator. I used the former to reconstruct the geometry as well as I could and then used the latter to shade regions and exported to .svg. I don't believe Photoshop is capable of exporting vector graphics. If you're interested in getting more expansion symbols up to snuff, let me know and maybe we can work together on a whole batch at once. jameslucas (" " / +) 15:28, 16 November 2012 (UTC)
Yeah I'm interested. I have Adobot Illustrator. But not Rhino. I'll play around with illustrator today if I have time. Leitmotiv (talk) 16:49, 16 November 2012 (UTC)
Cool; it's likely that all the work can be done in Illustrator, although some geometries are harder to construct there. Let me know if I can be of help in general or on certain symbols. jameslucas (" " / +) 18:33, 16 November 2012 (UTC)
Yeah some of the geometries will be my shortcoming. Like the Avacyn Restored will be tough for me. I've done a few already. Check out: Antiquities (Magic: The Gathering), Legends (Magic: The Gathering), The Dark, Fallen Empires, Arabian Nights (Magic: The Gathering), and Return to Ravnica. Right now, I plan to work from the oldest sets forward. I see though that Ice Age will be very difficult for me, so I will skip that one for now. Leitmotiv (talk) 00:56, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
For me the geometries are the fun part, so I'm happy to help out there; I think I even have some drawn that I never uploaded because entering the copyright information is so darn tedious. I'm almost certainly I drew Tempest's and Stronghold's symbols a few years back, so hold off if you haven't done those two yet. Maybe it would be most efficient for you to give me a "most wanted" list sometime before Thursday, and I'll bust some out over the long weekend and send them to you in Illustrator format along with whatever I find in the archives. jameslucas (" " / +) 18:41, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Well I've done some more, including Stronhold. Someone already uploaded Tempest. Here's the difficult ones for me: Ice Age, Portal, Portal Second Age, Exodus, Avacyn Restored, Gatecrash, and Wizard's Maze. A lot of the Duel Decks, From the Vaults, Archenemy, Planechase, Unhinged & Unglued, and Premium Deck stuff will be challenging as well. All of these are ones I will not be touching for a long while. Leitmotiv (talk) 20:23, 19 November 2012 (UTC)
Quick update: I ended up in the office for much of the weekend, so I didn't make much progress, but I'm on the case. jameslucas (" " / +) 14:48, 26 November 2012 (UTC)
No worries. I was only able to do one more for 7th edition. I have other more important deadlines coming up, so I won't get to do much for a while. But I will soon! Leitmotiv (talk) 17:03, 26 November 2012 (UTC)

Set symbols for Future Sight and 10th Edition?

I was just looking back through some of the older MTG set articles and noticed that these two don't have the set symbols on them. Since you uploaded the .svg for Planar Chaos, I was wondering if you could do something similar for Future Sight and 10th Edition as well. Thanks, and if you need any help, don't hesitate to ask. --lifebaka (Talk - Contribs) 21:59, 30 June 2008 (UTC)

Can do, and thanks for reminding me to get back to it. I'll add it to my schedule for this week. I will note however that my greater ambition is to improve the good-but-not-great infobox for MTG sets. If you or anyone else wants to take a peek at my sandbox, you'll see that I could use some advice on where to find good formatting/alignment tips. JamesLucas (talk) 04:50, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Just played around with it a bit, and got something that functions nearly the same as the currect {{infobox mtgset}}. It's at User:Lifebaka/Sandbox/MTG infobox, but given some of the formatting differences between the two I dunno' if it'd be good to put to use immediately. An example of how it'd look is at User:Lifebaka/Sandbox#1, but I put most of the parameters as "Text" there. Feel free to play around with it, if you want. I've got at least a working framework up to build a new infobox off of. Cheers. --lifebaka (Talk - Contribs) 13:26, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

It is almost time, so I'm gonna' go ahead and do the hist-merge. I'll run around and make sure nothing broke seriously, but I might not have time to fix all of it. I'll let you know if there's anything I find that I don't have time to fix. --lifebaka (Talk - Contribs) 23:42, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

I looked over all the sets and fixed everything I saw that was glaringly wrong, but I might've missed some things. I'm gonna' go offline now, so if you could give the sets a second go over that'd be great. Cheers, man. --lifebaka (Talk - Contribs) 00:07, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks so much! I'll be working on it for at least an hour. JamesLucas (" " / +) 00:09, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
I think things are looking pretty good, though we seem to be having some sort of positioning issue. Presumably the infobox should be first in the code, but the first line of body text in the article should be roughly in line with the top, as the Album template works (see any music album article, say Blood Mountain). But my coding currently causes the first paragraph of the article to drop down a paragraph. Oops. I'll look into this when I can, but if you know the fix, that would be awesome. JamesLucas (" " / +) 12:15, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Fix't. There were a few extra line spaces before the <noinclude>, which transcluded onto the pages. Cheers. --lifebaka (talk - contribs) 20:37, 17 July 2008 (UTC)
Bravo. JamesLucas (" " / +) 19:17, 18 July 2008 (UTC)

Barnstar

The Creator of the Barnstar
For creating the MTG Barnstar template and image, (which has really helped the project stay alive) I hereby award you the Creator of the Barnstar. Meisfunny Gab 15:57, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Well shucks, that was one of the most fun things I've done for Wikipedia! Glad to hear some optimism about the project. JamesLucas (" " / +) 19:49, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Dissension_expsym.svg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Dissension_expsym.svg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Rockfang (talk) 22:04, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

File source problem with File:Dissension_expsym.svg

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Dissension_expsym.svg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 22:04, 3 July 2009 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rockfang (talk) 22:04, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:AlaraReborn expsym.svg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:AlaraReborn expsym.svg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Speedy deletion of Pink Guillotine

Hello JamesLucas, this is a message from an automated bot to inform you that the page you created on August 10 2007, Pink Guillotine, has been marked for speedy deletion by User:Koavf (note: page has no mainspace links, and 9 edits). This has been done because the page seems to be about a musical recording, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant (see CSD). If you think the tag was placed in error, please add "{{hangon}}" to the page text, and edit the talk page to explain why the page should not be deleted. If you have a question about this bot, please ask it at User talk:SDPatrolBot II. If you have a question for the user who tagged the article, see User talk:Koavf. Thanks, - SDPatrolBot II (talk) on behalf of Koavf (talk · contribs) 21:02, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

Deletion

Hi I'm not 100% sure that I followed your message on my talk, but if anyone ever has a problem with deletion, he can always request review, whether or not he gets an opportunity to add {{hangon}}. If you need to respond, please do so on my talk. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM02:07, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Ah I think that your suggestion makes a lot of sense; especially considering how rapidly some of these speedy deletions occur. I recommend that you post to SDPatrolBot II's talk to get the creator of the bot to amend this message. —Justin (koavf)TCM12:48, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

License tagging for File:Mirrodinbesieged expsym.svg

Thanks for uploading File:Mirrodinbesieged expsym.svg. You don't seem to have indicated the license status of the image. Wikipedia uses a set of image copyright tags to indicate this information; to add a tag to the image, select the appropriate tag from this list, click on this link, then click "Edit this page" and add the tag to the image's description. If there doesn't seem to be a suitable tag, the image is probably not appropriate for use on Wikipedia.

For help in choosing the correct tag, or for any other questions, leave a message on Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. Thank you for your cooperation. --ImageTaggingBot (talk) 07:05, 13 January 2011 (UTC)

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 19:51, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Template:Infobox mtgblock has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the template's entry on the Templates for discussion page. Chris Cunningham (user:thumperward) (talk) 09:13, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Rise of the Eldrazi expsym.svg)

Thanks for uploading File:Rise of the Eldrazi expsym.svg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. "ironic" and "repeatedly"

Concerning this edit to Fahrenheit 451, I think you are mistaken in your grammar. The word "ironic" was being used as an adjective there, not an adverb. And for what it's worth, there is an adverb form too, "ironically". Also, changing "from time to time" to "repeatedly" in the same edit seems to be a stretch considering there's only three cases given.

I've reviewed my edit, and I'm confident that my change to 'ironic' was both necessary and correct, but I do like your improvement regarding frequency. 'Repeatedly' is not be incorrect per se, but I do like your choice of 'occasionally'. jameslucas (" " / +) 03:48, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
