2021 Virginia elections

Virginia state elections in 2021 were held on Tuesday, November 2, 2021. Primary elections were held on June 8, 2021.[1]

Governor

Incumbent Democratic governor Ralph Northam is unable to run for reelection, as the Constitution of Virginia prohibits the officeholder from serving consecutive terms. He was elected in 2017 with 53.9% of the vote, the most for a Democratic candidate in a statewide race. Glenn Youngkin won the gubernatorial election.

Lieutenant Governor

Incumbent lieutenant governor Justin Fairfax was eligible to run for a second term, but instead ran for governor.[3] He lost in the Democratic Primary to former Governor Terry McAuliffe. He was first elected in 2017 with 52.7% of the vote. Winsome Sears was elected as the first Lieutenant Governor to be female and of Jamaican descent.

Attorney General

Incumbent attorney general Mark Herring is running for re-election to a third term. He was re-elected in 2017 with 53.3% of the vote. A primary challenge by Delegate Jay Jones was supported by Governor Ralph Northam[4] as well as several federal and state legislators. Jason Miyares was elected the first Cuban-American and Hispanic Attorney General of Virginia.

House of Delegates

All 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates are up for election.[5] The chamber is currently controlled by Democrats after the 2019 elections, holding a majority of ten seats; unofficial returns project that control of the chamber will return to the Republican Party.
