Mithai (transl. Sweet) is a 2021 Indian Bengali Romantic Comedy Drama television series that premiered on 4 January 2021 on Zee Bangla. It is also available on the digital platform ZEE5 before it's telecast. The show is produced by Zee Bangla.[1] It stars Soumitrisha Kundu as Mithai Modak and Adrit Roy as Siddhartha Modak.[2]

Synopsis

Mithai is a cheerful sweets seller who goes to the Modak family to sell sweets. Over time, Mithai bonds with them like a family member. Later, Mithai runs away from her wedding to an unworthy lad. Dadu (transl.Grandfather) (the eldest member of the Modak Family) is informed by Mithai's mother, Parbati (a close friend of Siddhartha's mother, late Arati Modak), that she blessed Mithai as her daughter-in-law with their family necklace. Now she wants to give the necklace back to them but it is not possible because she is a cancer patient. She requested Dadai to find a groom for her daughter so that she could be restful from her situation. After hearing all these things, Dadai plans to get Mithai married to Siddhartha (Sid) who refuses to marry Mithai not because of her poor financial condition and lack of education and social skills, but because of he does not believe in the concept of marriage. Torsha proposes to Siddhartha, but he refuses as he does not believe in marriage or relationships, and would rather remain friends. Dadu decides to get Mithai married to Som (Sid's Elder brother, Arati adopted him) who backs out on the wedding day. In order to save Dadu's honour, Sid agrees to marry Mithai just because of his Dadai. Mithai's marital life is disturbed by Sid's indifference and Torsha's interference. Later Halla party [fun having party (group)] consisting of Rajib, Ratul, Nanda, Nipa, Sree and Sandy decides to bring them closer using different techniques and incidents.

Against Som, Borobabu's wish (Samaresh Modak, Mithai's father-in-law, but Sid doesn't respect him as his father because of his rudeness as his father sent him to the hostel at only 10, after 3 months of his mother death and somewhere he accuses him of his mother's death), Dadai (grandfather-in-law), plans for Mithai to join their family business. Som and Pishemosai (Mithai's paternal uncle in law) plot with Agarwals, Modak Group's rival company to stop Mithai from joining the business and cause financial loss. Meanwhile, Sid's father meets with Torsha's mother (a lawyer) to break up Mithai and Sid's marriage but Sid disagrees as he doesn't want to hurt his Dadai. Torsha's mother advises Mr. Modhak to let Mithai join the business and then frame her character to kick her out of the house, which he agrees to and allows Mithai to join the business as an employee. Mithai succeeds in making profits by re-introducing their traditional sweet Monohora. Torsha tries to cause chaos in Siddhartha and Mithai's life involving family matters and advising wrong things. This creates misunderstanding between Mithai and Sid. Sid lashes out on Mithai cursing their marriage every time as he feels it is choking him up from inside and making him go mad. Sid's family supports Mithai and everyone points out Sid's fault. This breaks Ratul and Nipa's (Sid's cousin sister) arrange marriage once, as Rajib and Ratul's mother does not support Sid's rudeness and irresponsibility towards Mithai. Sid feeling guilty tries to join Nipa and Ratul's broken alliance by apologizing to Ratul's mom and plays husband-wife with Mithai for a day. This makes Mithai to start having romantic feelings for Siddhartha which she does not want to accept. Later that day, Sid makes it clear that it was only drama for the sake of Ratul and Nipa's marriage and not reality, therefore Mithai must not misunderstand and have hope. Ratul and Nipa's engagement is announced. Halla party decides to use this to bring the couple closer. Shree (Sid's younger sis) and Sid's relation deteriorates further, as Shree could not see Mithai suffering. Also, Sid's indifference towards Shree feelings regarding their mother. Sandy gets arrested trying to protest against harassment and cat-calling. On shree and Mithai's clever instigation, Sid contacts his old friend ACP Rudra to save Sandy. Som joins hands with Torsha on Pishemosai's insistence to throw Mithai out of Sid's life and spoil the business. Mithai saves Sid from a fire accident. This changes something in Sid, and he starts to take care of Mithai. Although he says it is out of gratefulness, he pays more attention to Mithai and her health and stops the whole family and her from overexerting himself and rest. He helps her to cook. Suddenly, Dadai announces to have Mithai and Siddhartha to get divorced because Siddhartha has always felt that Dadai has put him in a trap with this marriage. They sign the divorce papers and request Torsha's mother to make sure the proceedings are kept after Nipa and Ratul's marriage. At first, Sid is unwilling to sign it, as he stresses about Mithai's well-being and life after divorce. Dadai says that he will think about it, Sid does not need to worry. Moreover, he may arrange another marriage for Mithai which disturbs Sid but still he signs the paper unheartedly.

Nipa and Ratul's marriage preparations starts. Aditya Agarwal, son of Agarwal group's owner, traps Nipa with dreams of foreign shopping, which leads to Nipa running away from her marriage. Everyone blames Mithai. Siddhartha and Rudra rescues Nipa on time on the basis of Mithai's intelligence. Nipa becomes depressed and does not want to marry, and therefore goes to her maternal uncle's house in Mython. Meanwhile, the family is heartbroken with the news. Ratul's mother cancels the marriage with Nipa and requests Sree to consider marrying Ratul for the sake of family's reputation. Shree agrees just to save the prestige of family despite Rajib, Siddhartha and her father's protest. Ratul is crestfallen and does not want this marriage as he is in love with Nipa. But his mother and family forces him to get married, which he does half-heartedly. Later this whole situation get Mithai one step closer to Sid as he becomes grateful again to Mithai. Next day, during Boubhat (ritual), Ratul goes to Nipa. The whole family was tensed due to Ratul's sudden leave. Shree lies by saying that he went for official work. In the evening, Ratul comes home with Nipa where they are celebrating Rabindra Jayanti in Monohora (Modak Family's house name). Everyone gets upset seeing them. Rajib is furious and questions him. Ratul explains that he wanted clarification from Nipa and had to meet her. Then he apologizes to Shree for his hurtful action. Siddhartha question Ratul's action for which Ratul tells him that he has no right as Sid himself left the marriage venue leaving Mithai alone. Sid says the situation was not the same. Sid does not believe in marriage, but Ratul does. Mithai tries to resolve the situation by reuniting Sree and Nipa. Mithai and Sid have their obvious comical banters as the celebration proceeds. Suddenly, Torsha and her mother comes to announce that the divorce date is set. But Sid dismisses the mutual divorce (which can't be possible in less than 1 year) by excusing the process is against the rules. Then Torsha's mother asked about file a divorce case and try to force Mithai but Sid stops them and says that he will talk later about it as they are in a trouble because of Ratul, Sree and Nipa. later Sid's father force sid to file the case and without Sid's agreement they files the case.In this phase slowly Sid realizes Mithai's worth and feels a unknowing soft corner in his heart and mostly he finds her mother's touch in her simplicity. Sid appoints a lawyer himself by help of his friend Rudra for mithai against Torsha's mother, Reboti. In the 1st trial Rebati creates a toxic environment in court by falsely allegate Mithai and her family, which Sid can't tolerate as he hate lies. later he confesses some truths which had strictly forbidden by Reboti and Mithai-sid start a banter in court, finally court decides to give them a 2nd chance and orders to go to a marriage counsellor and reports on court between 15 days. Torsha's mother, Reboti asks Torsha to convince Mithai indirectly to agree for the Divorce. So, Torsha takes Mithai to a Theme Café, where Sid and Torsha used to go during their college days. Torsha successfully manages to convince Mithai for the divorce. Later, Sid comes in the café to pick up Torsha for their project and hugs her for changing her mindset against Mithai. Seeing this, Mithai thinks Sid loves Torsha as already Torsha washed her brain in cafe. On, the hearing date, Mithai takes up all the accusations and set free Sid and court approve the divorce but Sid was so upset to see mithai telling lie and a huff was growing in his heart on mithai. Then Dadai hatches a plan again to bring them closer. On the occasion of Rath Yatra, Dadai announces the wedding of Mithai and Sid's friend, ACP Rudra. Then, Sid tells everyone that Mithai can't marry because she is married! But Tess opposes him and tell him to give the final signature on the divorce paper and set Mithai free, but he takes Rudra with him and says the bad habits of Mithai to stop the wedding. Anyway, Rudra says he doesn't have problem with those and agrees for the marriage. When Dadai starts the ceremony of Ashirbad, Sid stops him from doing so and tells Mithai cannot marry Rudra. Dadai asks what would Mithai do if the marriage doesn't happen. Sid tells that he has some personal issues and after knowing Torsha's evil plan (she confessed herself in anger) he insults her and makes her clear that he always thought her as his best friend. Later everyone poke Sid to accept his marriage and finally he takes a challenge to be the husband of Mithai for 1 month then if he feels the bond of marriage as everyone says he will continue his marriage otherwise everyone have to accept his decision after 1 month. It hurts Mithai's ego as so normal and mithai tends to return to Jonai but Sid stops her. Being angry of Sid, Shamaresh leaves Monohara. And they start a new journey by sharing their life with each other (with Dadai and other family members' surprise plan of Wedding Night for the 1st time they will stay in a same room like a husband and wife. While this they decide to manage Sree and Ratul's marriage.
