Would you mind unhatting over at ITN?

Annoying ip contributor made the weakness of their position clear, and I was able to utilize the disruption to make my own pertinent observation. I'd rather everyone see my comments unless there's some other reason to obscure them. Thanks. BusterD (talk) 10:23, 5 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hatting actually makes it far more like likely that your observations will get read. A hat is basically a great big signpost saying there may be something interesting or amusing here. Tlhslobus (talk) 16:13, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the laugh, but...

I've thanked you for your edit hatting the troll vote on Gorbachecv's blurb at ITN. However I'm thanking you for drawing the troll to my attention, etc, as I found the whole incident (the troll, the replies, and your hat citing WP:DENY) mildly amusing. However, though a source of mild amusement, at least for me, the hatting seems basically to be feeding the trolls by drawing attention to something that would otherwise be much less likely to be noticed, which seems contrary to the aims of WP:DENY. Of course quite likely you are already aware of this, but I thought I'd point it out, just in case you weren't aware of it. But please don't let that worry you, and thanks again for amusing me. Regards, Tlhslobus (talk) 16:07, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yes, I was damn fully aware that's what I was doing. But the troll already got what they wanted, which was six or seven people responding to them saying "Hey, you are very obviously wrong". Best I could do at that point was to try to make lemonade out of lemons. 🌈WaltCip-(talk) 18:27, 31 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

The Special Barnstar
I love your signature, and you know it's good because it's apparently good enough to yoink. –MJLTalk 06:09, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks, MJL. I yoinked the design myself from Praxidicae, if I remember correctly, before she changed her signature to be more pickle-oriented. I have to say, I didn't think LaserLegs would ever be banned. If it wasn't for Fram, we'd probably still be dealing with LL's trolling yet.--🌈WaltCip-(talk) 13:39, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW

LoveToLondon did leave me the courtesy message on my talk page within the same minute as posting to ANI. [1] Masem (t) 14:42, 22 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

ITN nomination for 2022 Haitian crisis

Hey there! I've started a second discussion on the eligibility of the 2022 Haitian crisis article for ITN, and since you participated in the previous discussion, I thought you might like to provide your input. Thank you! —Matthew - (talk) 22:13, 29 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You and I have no outstanding issues

It's not enough for me to apologize. I want to thank you for holding me accountable when I say something unimpressive. That's a sign of friendship, and I appreciate that you care enough to speak bluntly. I still carry a number of resentments about how portals were methodically and tactically removed from pedia viewership (such as it was), and I especially resent how a number of users leading that successful push have been since blocked or otherwise sanctioned, yet the damage is done (such as it is). The use of a SPA attempting to partially cleanse the Arbcom record to the public seemed of a part with that effort and raised my hackles. So it's zero consolation to me that my suspicions were correct and the SPA blocked. The work continues, methodically and tactically. BusterD (talk) 23:50, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Your opinion?

Hello, WaltCip. Regarding this message on my talk page (I'm a bit puzzled why you removed it a minute after posting it), I must say that the userpage of JRSpriggs seems to me like a "perfect storm" of breaching WP:NOTWEBHOST, WP:SOAPBOX, WP:UPNOT and WP:POLEMIC. I have no idea how it survived your MfD nomination to delete it back in 2011, but if its nominated today, I know what my vote would be (and I'm pretty damn sure I wouldn't be alone in voting that way). — Sundostund mppria (talk / contribs) 22:26, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Good to know, thanks. I don't feel like I could renominate it, because I'm playing the heel right now when it comes to all of this userspace MfD business (in the sense that my current viewpoints now align with keeping over deleting), and I'd come across as hypocritical to do it now. But I wouldn't oppose your efforts. 🌈WaltCip-(talk) 22:46, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
 Done – I just nominated it. — Sundostund mppria (talk / contribs) 23:04, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Even if we disagree on things, I must say I admire your adherence to your principles. But I do think you're going to be in for a struggle on this particular one. 🌈WaltCip-(talk) 00:44, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, thank you. I must say that I can get very stubborn, when it comes to adhering to my principles (which can be described as deletionism, in its broad sense). Of course, my views can change over time, same as with any other living person I guess... And, I see every MfD nomination as something that is "handed over" to consensus of editors for their judgement, not as some kind of a struggle. I can accept whatever that consensus decide to do with my nomination. Nothing more, nothing less than that. I don't see all of that as some kind of "vanity playground", really. — Sundostund mppria (talk / contribs) 01:03, 9 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Apersion

Hey Walt, I saw that you were casting wild aspersions about me regarding a diff you linked. Please put forward any evidence you have or strike your comment. I really thought you were one of the good ones that would treat me like i was a human as per our engagement well after that comment. Well, thank you for showing me i was wrong. Ip editor bad by defaut because someone with a named account did something. As per usual. 85.16.47.145 (talk) 00:58, 15 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It was a dumb remark, it was a stupid remark, I struck it, and I apologize. I can't do anything about how you feel about me, but I am sorry for casting that aspersion, and you are right to be pissed off and disappointed. Have a good evening. 🌈WaltCip-(talk) 01:16, 15 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, no hard feelings. It was surprising news, and we all can easily get ahead of ourselves in cases like this. I do understand. Anyway, thank you. I hope you can at least understand where some of that frustration comes from for me when stuff like this happens. But seriously, thank you. And as a small aside. If you really want to get a little 'nosey' with IP editors, to establish if there is a pattern for a person for a variable IP and the like. There is a little button on the bottom leftish corner of the contributions page of every IP editor called 'geolocate'. It is not exact by any means, thank goodness, but it will give country and closish location within. So if you did that for me, you could see that i reside in Lower Saxony, Germany. Would give a town 20 miles away from me though. And as i would not physically move house to edit Wiki, that rough region would stay a constant. For me and practically every other IP that does not undertake underhanded methods to disguise their physical location that is. Easy way to keep track of a handful of people if you can remember their location and then double check if it is them. Anyway, thank you and i hope i wasnt being an ass over this. Was laying in bed and just browsed the notice boards. Nearly fell out of said bed when i saw a comment of mine hahaha. And yes i did geolocate myself to double check if that actually was me. But i was very sure to have written that anyway. And i will freely admit, not the best probably. But given the user in question got cbanned for what i mentioned in that post, i don't really feel like i was wrong doing it. 85.16.46.255 (talk) 01:43, 15 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I totally understand. I appreciate the advice regarding geolocation. No, you weren't being ass, your response was completely valid given the circumstances as I was casting an aspersion, even if at the time I may not have had the foresight to realize that. And in retrospect, you are likely right about the CBANned user as well.--🌈WaltCip-(talk) 01:42, 15 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Regardless if i was right, there are places to talk about that. And ITN talk is not the place to do it. Simple as really. Nobody is perfect and sometimes life gets the better of us so we do things that are... suboptimal. But anyway, it is nice that this could be sorted the way it did. Have a good rest of your day. 85.16.46.255 (talk) 01:58, 15 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
