Career

Early career and African Development Bank

Anne Kabagambe's professional journey commenced with her role representing the City of New York in matters concerning global trade and investment, a role that would prove to be a stepping stone to her remarkable career. Her responsibilities took her across the globe, where she explored trade and investment opportunities in regions as diverse as China, India, and the Middle East. She also gained valuable experience working with renowned institutions like the United Nations and the Third World Institute, situated in the vibrant city of New York City.

In 1989, Anne embarked on a new chapter by joining the African Development Bank. This marked the beginning of a transformative 27-year tenure within the organization. Her rise within the ranks of the bank was nothing short of meteoric, culminating in her appointment as the Chief of Staff and Director of Cabinet.

She played a pivotal role in shaping the bank's long-term strategy, steering it through the tumultuous waters of the financial crisis of 2007–08, and providing critical input during the Western African Ebola virus epidemic. World Bank

In recognition of her exceptional leadership, in November 2018, Anne Kabagambe was elected to the position of executive director of the World Bank Group's Africa Group 1 Constituency—which represents Botswana, Burundi, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, the Gambia, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe—after having previously served as the constituency's alternate executive director. She became the second woman to hold the position after Ethiopia's Mulu Ketsela. Kabagambe also serves as co-chair of the World Bank Board's working group on gender and is a member of the Board's committees of budget and development effectiveness.
