The meaning of Aghadrumsee
[edit]Is it possible that the translation of Aghadrumsee is incorrect. A local expert told us the meaning is "Field of Sally Trees"
KDDA (talk) 00:12, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
- According to this page on Irish place names agha means field and droim means hillock. The sidhe were a mythical people, as in bean sídhe.
- Some dispute whether 'sidhe' refers to the people or the hillock they were supposed to have lived in, in either case Aghadrumsee roughly translates as 'field of the fairy hillock'.
I have found a copy of "Census of Ireland 1659" on page 100 in the Parish of Clones Aghadrumsee is listed as "Ashdrumsie" with 19 persons recorded. Does this mean anything to anyone?

- Apparently the census listed places alphabetically. Is there also an 'Aghadrumsee' (or something like it) mentioned? If not you could add the alternative name to the article and cite the census as a source. Unknown Unknowns (talk) 11:29, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I dont know how to add the alternative name, can you help?
The local expert I was talking about was Dr P McKay of the Northern Ireland Place-Names Project who gave a talk on townlands and their meanings. I have sent an email to townlands@qub.ac.uk to ask for his opinion.

[edit]Just add the text and reference (book title, author, year, publisher, ISBN - if there is one) below and I'll put it in the article. Unknown Unknowns (talk) 11:22, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
