Launch site coordinates

[edit]

Does anyone have a precise reference for the location of the test range launch site? This seems to be a necessary piece of information before splitting the launch site into its own article separate from the town/locality. We need some indication of distance and direction from Koonibba (town), not just from Ceduna. --Scott Davis Talk 07:51, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know how one would find this out, ScottDavis. Koonibba is supposedly 38km from Koonibba, and Southern Launch says the site is 40km NW of Ceduna, but it's hard to know if this is precise. The whole range is quite a large area - do they always launch from the same spot, and could it be a security risk to locate it too precisely, I wonder? Hi Laterthanyouthink. I was hoping someone had seen a more detailed map, or even been one of the several hundred people reported to have been there. I imagine the launch site is north of the township, closer to the conservation park, since the range extends over the reserves to the north. I think I saw a reference that the launch rails have been set up for months, so guessing that location secrecy is not too significant, but Google's overhead images are unlikely to pick out something so small since the videos do not suggest much other permanent structure. --Scott Davis Talk 14:17, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Aha! I found a source that puts a dot almost three kilometres northeast from the township at 31°53′08″S 133°26′55″E / 31.885558°S 133.448686°E / -31.885558; 133.448686 (Koonibba Test Range)[1] Does this look plausible enough to include? --Scott Davis Talk 14:34, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well done - looks good enough until/unless we get something better! Laterthanyouthink (talk) 00:22, 20 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I added an infobox for the range, then removed it again as part of a split to make Koonibba Test Range a stand-alone article. I've also made the wikidata item for the range, but it could probably do with more attributes. --Scott Davis Talk 14:18, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
