Jerry Granelli and Buddhism
[edit]In case someone thinks this is worth adding to the article, the Seattle Times obituary for him wrote:
- "A practicing Buddhist, Granelli in the mid-1970s co-founded the Creative Music Workshop at the Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado, a school that grew up around the Tibetan Buddhist teacher Chögyam Trungpa. Buddhist mindfulness was part and parcel of Granelli's aesthetic." http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/obituaries/jerry-granelli-drummer-behind-a-charlie-brown-christmas-and-former-cornish-instructor-dies-at-80?
The CBC wrote:
- "In the late '80s, Granelli moved to Halifax to join the Nova Scotian Buddhist community. (A longtime practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, Granelli once remembered, "the first time I went to hear Chogyam Trungpa speak, it was like the first time I heard Charlie Parker.") He became a Canadian citizen in 1989 and a leading figure of the East Coast jazz scene, establishing the Atlantic Jazz Festival (now the Halifax Jazz Festival.)" https://www.cbc.ca/music/remembering-jerry-granelli-the-legendary-drummer-behind-a-charlie-brown-christmas-1.6110882
CTV wrote:
- "Granelli also travelled the world as a gifted teacher, not just of music but also of meditation and Tibetan Buddhism. The religion brought him to Halifax in 1987, said his son, noting his dad was a devotee of Tibetan teacher Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and followed him to the city." https://atlantic.ctvnews.ca/jazz-drummer-jerry-granelli-dies-peacefully-in-halifax-at-age-80-1.5517077
