Plagiarism (cont'd.)

Thank you again for guiding me through the script installation in the Teahouse. If I understand correctly, this script will enable me to mark particular edits in the page history for review by the administrators? LeónGonsalvesofGoa (talk) 05:44, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@LeónGonsalvesofGoa yep! Basically, if you find a copyright violation, you have three options. One is to use WP:CSD - this is for when the copyright violation exists from the very beginning of the article history, or for when basically the entire article is a copyright violation and removing the plagiarised bits would leave us with effectively no article at all. The second is to do what you did in that previous article, and tag the page for possible copyvio (which means someone else has to come along and check and deal with it). But if you can identify the particular edits in the page history where copyvio was introduced, that saves the admins some work, so it's best to take this option when you can. First, remove the copyvio from the article yourself, so there's a clean edit on top. Then, you want to find the edit where the copyvio was introduced, and mark every edit including that one and up to your clean one as copyvio. An admin will come along, check your work, and then apply WP:REVDEL if they agree that it's appropriate. More info, links, etc at WP:CP. -- asilvering (talk) 18:02, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My mistake, it seems the page hasn't been reviewed yet (Zainuddin Makhdoom I). Is there a way to undo what I did? I'm aware that at least one paragraph was plagiarised. Additionally, it seems the author of the page has been blocked (User:D climacus). LeónGonsalvesofGoa (talk) 04:45, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@LeónGonsalvesofGoa it looks like you tagged the article for attention, but didn't post it onto the copyright investigations page, so no one noticed. Not to worry - I've put a revdel request on it. Here are the steps I took, so you know how to do this yourself if you need to in the future:
  1. I went back into the page history to the last edit before you put the cv notice on it: [1]
  2. I clicked (top right corner) Page --> Analysis --> Copyright vio detector. If you're using the default UI this will look a bit different for you, but the outcome is the same.
  3. Yep, obvious copyvio. I didn't even have to ask you what blog post it was copying from. It's such an obvious case that we can immediately ask for deletion.
  4. I tagged it for WP:CSD (I use WP:TWINKLE to make this easy).
  5. I changed my mind. It looks like the very top part of the article might be fine. So I went back into the history and restored the edit from before you got to it, where there is still obvious copyvio.
  6. I deleted the copyvio from the article and left the URL of the page it was copied from in the edit summary.
  7. I added the "unreliable sources" tag because the rest of it doesn't look great and someone should verify it.
  8. I used User:Enterprisey/cv-revdel to tag the edits that need deleting - everything from the first edit where the text is added, up to the edit where I restored it.
Done. An admin should swing by and remove the relevant page history soon. -- asilvering (talk) 03:51, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Impressive, I will have to look into Twinkle. To address #7, I actually found this article through a book I'm reading about Portuguese colonialism. Let me see what I can gather from it. LeónGonsalvesofGoa (talk) 04:46, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I added reference #3 but see an error message in red (Zainuddin Makhdoom I). Can you help me correct? I am trying to find more reliable sources. LeónGonsalvesofGoa (talk) 05:30, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@LeónGonsalvesofGoa Done! You could also remove that parameter entirely, probably, but I left it. -- asilvering (talk) 05:36, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Disrespectful messages

Did you message me in order to gloat? I imagine you call that neutral and respectful, hey?. Shows what you know. And. I already responded to the other fella's note.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:AntiDionysius#Reversions

Our world cannot evolve if we must praise con artists. Wikipedia pedantically leads the way into a new dark ages touting banal formalism.

Offering contrary evidence is not a neutral point of view and cannot be made to sound neutral. If you can improve something, then do so. Deleting reference to valid commentary is a poor response, especially on a website claiming to be devoted to information and knowledge. Shame on the lot of you.

I messaged you to help, under the assumption that you cared to learn. I see I was in error. -- asilvering (talk) 11:04, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I learn every day. And I have more sense and etiquette than to repeatedly insult those I deal with. Insulting me only betrays your pettiness. You disqualify as unreliable a reference you obviously know nothing about. Talk about not wanting to learn - look in the mirror, mate. Your reversion was unethical and wrong, and certainly helps no one. Your effort here, at least in this case, devalues wikipedia and undermines any claim wikipedia makes for credibility. -- Ronald Blake (talk) 08:06, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For anyone reading this who does care to learn about why self-published sources are generally unacceptable on Wikipedia, see WP:SPS. This is part of the Verifiability policy. -- asilvering (talk) 08:29, 16 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Recommendation On Draft:Amanda Shatzko

Hi, I saw you had a detailed comment on the draft. I edited it and would appreciate any feedback that you may have, including how good is it to pass the editorial review process? Thank you! Wikstarrin89 (talk) 06:32, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Wikstarrin89, I prefer not to re-review drafts when I was the last decline (I don't want to be keeping an article out of mainspace in the event that my opinion is out of sync with general consensus). Your best bet is just to resubmit it and see what happens. If you'd like some additional new eyes on it, I suggest asking for thoughts at WP:TEA. -- asilvering (talk) 14:29, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

thank you :>

thank you for the review and comment on my draft, and sorry for the inconvenience tho!

@Pitocuev42 It's no inconvenience! Good luck with the article. -- asilvering (talk) 20:14, 18 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Dead76 on Elvis: A Legendary Performer Volume 2 (23:26, 22 January 2024)

How do you put a recording on Wikipedia --Dead76 (talk) 23:26, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

HI @Dead76, what kind of recording are you talking about? If you mean you want to upload a recording from the album you've linked here, you can't do that, for copyright reasons. -- asilvering (talk) 23:28, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Stefandavidkraus (06:14, 26 January 2024)

Hi. Need to cite external web links as reference AND upload certification documents as evidence of record from aerospace authority. Not sure how to do that? Any help/guide would be greatly appreciated! --Stefandavidkraus (talk) 06:14, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Stefandavidkraus, I'm not sure exactly what you're asking, but WP:REFB might help? For your second question, assuming you're talking about references, in general Wikipedia prefers WP:SECONDARY sources, and primary documents like what you're talking about tend to be a sign that you're about to do some original research, which is generally discouraged. You might want to check with the folks at WP:AVIATION. -- asilvering (talk) 07:14, 26 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Page mover granted

Hello, Asilvering. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving a redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

If you do not want the page mover right anymore, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Thank you, and happy editing! Hey man im josh (talk) 18:46, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

I have tried to add more to “reception” section. Stan Dane’s book has been noted by pro and anti researchers as showcasing Murphy’s good “process of elimination” research. Curiously, we have this short article, The Interloper: Lee Harvey Oswald Inside the Soviet Union, which inspires me to try to make this one. If you think that the draft could be accepted now, let me know. Regardless, I try to add more sources when I find them, whether the draft is accepted to be submitted or not. 82.40.149.241 (talk) 82.40.149.241 (talk) 13:58, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IP, the problem with the stuff in the "reception" section, as I see it, is that the sources are responding to Sean Murphy's ideas, but this isn't an article about Sean Murphy or his ideas, it's an article on a book, Prayer Man, that is itself also about those ideas. What we need to see is that the book, Prayer Man, is notable. That means we want to see evidence of in-depth discussion of this book. Usually, the easiest way to do that is to find substantial reviews of the book, preferably scholarly ones. -- asilvering (talk) 23:39, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Pellerojo on Al Michaels (19:37, 13 February 2024)

Error in Al Michaels bio: Al's first television job in Hawaii, was as the 6 o'clock & late-night sports caster for KGMB-TV Honolulu (channel 9, CBS affiliate). His contract with Cecil Heftel (station owner/CEO at that time) was for one year between 1968 to 1969. I know, because I worked there with him every afternoon/night during that time. --Pellerojo (talk) 19:37, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Pellerojo, you're welcome to fix the article yourself, and please do! However, we can't just add information to biography articles without reliable, published sources - even things you know for sure are true because you were there. Can you find a source anywhere that we could use for this information? -- asilvering (talk) 22:40, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Electronic Literature project

HI and thank you for your interest in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Electronic literature - Wikipedia. We are great writers, but newbies to wikipedia. Did you want to join in on our monthly editathons? Hello dear

Please help me with this draft Draft:Aleksandar Saša Trajkovski - Wikipedia Мкдвики (talk) 18:16, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Мкдвики, right now there is a big list of URLs at the end, but the whole "early life and education section" has no footnotes. Did this information come from those URLs? If so, it will help a lot if you convert them to footnotes instead. -- asilvering (talk) 04:49, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Asilvering yes Yes, the entire text, every sentence is supported by all those links. Please help me with the footnotes too 🙏🏻 Now I need to turn the links below into footnotes or put sources for the Early life and education section? Мкдвики (talk) 07:13, 17 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
