Raw Log Exports
[edit]I think it should be mentioned that the economy is suffering deeply from raw log exports. 4:52, 19 October 2006
The demographics section refers to a 'shift', people not leaving due to a 'shift' in the economy. That dosen't fly. There is no link to back that up, there is no factual information about a 'shift', no proof.
I have to agree with the Raw Log Export poster, economy is suffering. I think the overview is a little rosey and not accurate.

Martian Mars... Changes
[edit]Well technically, not the largest water bomber in the world anymore, I do suppose that it is still the largest "flying boat" type of water bomber.
Modification and Explanation
The world's largest production Aerial firefighting flying boat, the Martin Mars water bombers, make their home on nearby Sproat Lake. This lake is also a popular summer destination for local residents and cottagers from surrounding areas.
The use of the word "production" gives the notion that this aircraft was made specifically for firefightng, this is not the case, as it was a modification.
Aircraft like the Canadair_CL-215 was specifically designed for this use and are production aircraft. --phalcon 23:27, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
- Good catch! Grey Shadow | Talk 02:18, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- Though, there is a current misconception that the Mars are the worlds largest waterbombers period, and like I mentioned the IL-76 and the DC-8 are lager in capacity, perhaps we can find better wording then what is currently ambiguous in wording. I was thinking on the lines of convaying that they are the largest in capacity of aircraft that land on water, and where the worlds largest over all from <year> to <year>. Not sure on exact wording. But thats my idea. Furthermore, do we need to add the "This lake is also a popular summer destination for local residents and cottagers from surrounding areas." after it? --phalcon 05:21, 20 November 2006 (UTC)
- The link to JRM Mars added to the image may help with these questions. KenWalker | Talk 01:46, 7 January 2007 (UTC)

Salmon
[edit]Salmon set up in its own section - it was overpowering History section Bobanni (talk) 17:00, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
This section is particularly editorial in tone. Are there any citations for the claims in this section? Kevstan (talk) 20:29, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
Notable residents
[edit]I see I am at odds with Emex420 over the inclusion of a couple of notable Port Alberni people in the article. I generally regard red links under notable people headings as something that should not be there. If they are notable, at least create a stub article. That I why I deleted K. Haggard and Bryce McLaughlin. As to the former, if she is notable, google hasn't noticed. As to McLaughlin, I see someone has added a resume for him to IMDB. That doesn't do it. The problem is that Wikipedia gets used by people wanting to pad a resume or bootstrap themselves up from the ground. If they are actually notable, there should be an article created for them. Otherwise, they don't belong in this list. --KenWalker | Talk 05:20, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
- I concur and have removed the non-notable residents again. They don't meet any of the standards of notability. In my edit report I explained that the information should only be re-inserted if they prove notability via a Wikipedia article, or if they're able to provide outside references (via reliable sources) illustrating notability. ponyo (talk) 14:52, 22 June 2008 (UTC)
Harry the bulldog player is from Ontario, not Port Alberni. Should he really be on that list? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.209.209.131 (talk) 21:22, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
lede
[edit]The lede does not unequivocally state Port Alberni is located ON Vancouver Island - and much of the body is also not totally clear on this. The lede also talks a lot about what is not there much anymore (salmon), but needs to also mention what is there (forest industry, perhaps) --JimWae (talk) 07:50, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
Residential School
[edit]I understand the residential school was part of the history of Port Alberni, but why do these sentences, "The Canadian Federal government now says that this was a big blot on race relations in Canada. The residential school system run by the United Church forcibly separated children from their families and communities. Many suffered physical and sexual abuse" need to be included? This has nothing to do with the history of Port Alberni or the Alberni Valley. These sentences are more then appropriate for the article on the Residential School system, but they have nothing to do with the City of Port Alberni. I'll leave them up there for one week from today and if I get no response on this talk page or mine, then I will remove them. Deadly_windex (talk) 20:40, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
- There was a lot that happened in secret there. The building was in the city of Alberni. It is part of the history of the area. The reference reflects the attitude at the time. Almost everything could be included other articles - like the tsunami. Leave it in.Bobanni (talk) 12:10, 16 October 2008 (UTC)
- I understand that things happened at the school that were very uncool, but they were administered by the United Church of Canada and the Federal Government, not the City of Port Alberni. And actually if you knew your Alberni Valley history, you'd know that the Residential School was not in the City, but outside of it on the reserve. Back to my point, The pain and suffering that happened at the school were unfortunate, but have nothing to do with the city! The city had no choice on where the school was built, and as such, I don't think it's appropriate to have a reference to the horrible things that happened there in the article for the city. It's like getting flamed for something your neighbors did in their backyard without your consent. Deadly_windex (talk) 07:28, 18 October 2008 (UTC)
- I just did a check of the other pages for cities on Vancouver Island and none of them talk about their collective Residential Schools so I'm going to remove the part of this article about it, I think that until all the other cites pages have a section on their Residential Schools, the this page should not either. Deadly_windex (talk) 05:26, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
Only a COMPLETE moron could suggest that the Alberni residential school was not important to Port Albernis History. Do I really have to remind some person that this wikipedia page is not for the purpose of hiding unpopular history. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Afactfinder (talk • contribs) 19:39, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
- Ok, I'm not going to get into a flame war over this residential school. I'm not trying to hide unpleasant history, I'm mearly suggesting that if people were to come to the Port Alberni page looking for information, those sentences have nothing to do with Port Alberni or the Alberni Valley. "The Canadian Federal government now says that this was a big blot on race relations in Canada." explain to me what this sentence has to do with the city of Port Alberni. It belongs on a page about race relations in Canada, not on the page of a city. There were many residential schools operated on Vancouver Island, why is Port Alberni's the only one talked about in the article on the city itself? If no one can give me a reasonable answer without calling me a bigot or a white washer, then I don't see the harm in removing said sentence. --Deadly windex (talk) 05:36, 13 September 2011 (UTC)
Tsunami link no longer works
[edit]There is an actual film transferred to video of the aftermath of the event on YouTube. Some bot didn't like it, and I refuse to do battle with a machine.
Here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeBPg8nCpiA FX (talk) 06:20, 10 August 2009 (UTC)
I looked at the page on external links http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:EL
It doesn't even have the word youtube in the page, so so much for reading the instructions. Again.

Orphaned references in Port Alberni, British Columbia
[edit]I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Port Alberni, British Columbia's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.
