Glitch Productions Pty. Ltd. (also known as Glitch and formerly Glitchy Boy or Glitchy Boy Productions) is an Australian computer animation studio headquartered in Sydney, New South Wales. They started off as Glitchy Boy in 2017 and were created to represent the web series SMG4, which had been going since 2011. They have since expanded to significantly higher budget products such as Meta Runner, Murder Drones, and The Amazing Digital Circus. Glitch's most recent series, The Amazing Digital Circus, became an online phenomenon and has amassed over 250 million views as of February 2024. The company was featured in the Forbes 30 Under 30 list for Media, Marketing, and Advertising in 2023.[2]
History
On 7 May 2011, co-founder Luke Lerdwichagul created his first web series, SMG4, at the age of 11. The content featured often focuses on animated bloopers surrounding Super Mario, using an emulated version of 1996's Super Mario 64 for the Nintendo 64 as its basis, as well as other characters across video games and the internet, recently introducing original IP characters (including Tari, Melony, Meggy, etc.) Around 2016, Luke's older brother, Kevin Lerdwichagul, who had observed the channel and its wide audience, saw the potential to form a business around the channel, later joining the series as a full-time writer and producer, while Luke took on a directing role as well as voicing the titular character.[3] As of mid-March 2024, the channel has 7.8 million subscribers.
On 5 December 2018, Glitch released the trailer for Meta Runner after multiple teasers, a computer-animated e-sports sci-fi series that would air on the SMG4 channel on 25 July 2019.[4][5] The series, funded by Screen Australia, became the top-performing online investment from the company, racking up 10 million viewers across its first season.[6] The first season was also financed with support from Crunchyroll and AMD,[7] and financed in association with Epic Games.[7][8] On 20 April 2020, Screen Australia announced that they would be funding a second season of Meta Runner.[9]
On 27 August 2020, Glitch Productions moved their operations to their own official YouTube channel,[10] though SMG4 and Hobo Bros. would continue airing on their own channels, the SMG4 channel would later remove all Glitch branding. The first major release on this new channel was the pilot for a Meta Runner spin-off titled Ultra Jump Mania!, which premiered on 4 September 2020.[11] The pilot however, was not picked up for a full season. Shortly after, the second season of Meta Runner premiered on 16 October 2020, also funded by Screen Australia.[12]
On 12 March 2021, Glitch Productions unveiled Sunset Paradise, an SMG4 spin-off centred on the breakout character Meggy Spletzer, which released its pilot on 26 March 2021.[13] On 12 May 2021, the series received online production funding from Screen Australia.[14]
On 9 October 2021, it was announced that Glitch would be releasing a pilot titled Murder Drones, created, written, and directed by Liam Vickers on 29 October.[15][16] In 2023, the series would nominated a Webby Award for Best Animated Video (Series & Channels).[17]
On 1 September 2023, Glitch announced that they would be hosting GlitchX, an indie animation expo on 9 November 2023.[18] Ahead of the convention, Glitch Productions released the pilot for The Amazing Digital Circus, a series created in collaboration with Gooseworx on 13 October 2023.[19][20] It became an online phenomenon upon release, bringing in over 200 million views within less than two months.[citation needed]
