Taimi (/teɪmi/ TAY-mee) is a dating app that caters to LGBTQI+ people. The network matches internet users based on their selected preferences and location. Taimi runs on iOS[1] and Android.[2]
The mobile application has a free and subscription-based premium version. Taimi started out as an online dating application for gay men.[3] However, the company announced several times plans for LGBTQI+ inclusive version in the past.[4]
Taimi currently provides dating services to LGBTQ+ people, including video calling and chatting.
Taimi is available in 45 countries[5] including the United States, Canada, Italy, Australia,[6] Singapore,[7] and Brazil.[8]
History
Taimi was launched in 2017 by Social Impact Inc. in Las Vegas.[9]
The company has expanded to several countries in Europe. On October 31, 2018, Taimi announced the launch in the United Kingdom.[10] On July 20, 2019, Taimi launched in the Netherlands,[11] Spain[12] and countries in Central America followed.[13]
In 2020, after BlueCity went public with Blued, Pasykov hinted at the possibility of Taimi's future IPO.[14]
Pasykov describes himself as an ally and stated in an open letter that Taimi would partner with NGOs to fight state-sponsored homophobia around the world.[15]
The company has been a sponsor of several Pride marches and parades including Los Angeles Pride, New York City Pride, Las Vegas Pride. Taimi also partnered up with the Trevor Project to support LGBTQI+ rights.[16] During COVID-19 pandemic Taimi partnered with Attitude Magazine for virtual pride.[17]
Operation
Features
Taimi claims to be "the safest gay dating" app[18] with a focus on security features like two-factor authentication and automated account verification.[19] The founder has described the app's development as "user-driven".[20]
In 2018 the app was met with a negative response from LGBTQI+ activists when Taimi implemented a filter that allowed Taimi users to block each other based on HIV status.[21] Taimi removed the filter and that option is no longer available.
In 2020, Taimi launched new features including Rainbow Like and Live Streams. The latter were introduced during a livestreaming event, Taimi Talks.[22]
In November 2020 the app underwent a full redesign, incorporating a new logo, new branding, and an upgraded app interface.[23]
Core Beliefs and Values
Taimi operates under an umbrella of three core beliefs:
- Discovery: Everyone should have the right to question their sexuality, and this both a healthy and positive activity
- Diversity: The LGBTQ+ community is widely diverse and all preferences for dating and sex are valid
- Fluidity: Sexuality is fluid and may evolve throughout one’s lifetime. Taimi honors that fluidity with a full range of dating possibilities
Key Features
Users register on the app and complete a profile/bio, including personal information and preferences for compatibility, dating style, and relationship goals.
A sophisticated algorithm then finds and presents recommendations that a user accepts or rejects
Users are then free to chat via text or video with people they’ve connected with.
Safety and security features include a two-step authentication process and an automated account verification along with a clear reporting system when breaches or policy violations occur.
User responses to new features and policies drive changes and modifications that are made to all aspects of the site.
Partnerships and Collaborations
Taimi has a long history of collaborations and partnerships in Pride events, both in the US and abroad, including fund-raising efforts.
Taimi has partnered with Rakuten Viber to create a bot focused on educating its members on key LGBTQ+ topics and to allow queer Viber users to connect.
In 2023, Taimi collaborated with the Known Agency in an “America the Beautiful” campaign to shine a spotlight on current anti-LGBTQ+ policies and laws in a number of US states, and to counter these by highlighting the values and freedoms upon which America was founded. The campaign was nominated for The Drum Awards in the category “OOH For Good” and honored with the ANA Multicultural Excellence Award.
Taimi also partnered with Goodparts, a queer-owned and operated retailer, in a “Body Beautiful” campaign focused on love and acceptance of all body types. In this campaign, well-known LGBTQ+ artists are providing artwork for Goodpart’s product packaging.
From October 31st to December 13th, 2023, Taimi showed the "Taimi Moments" video, created in collaboration with Raygun Agency, on large screens between performances of renowned LGBTQ+ artists Doja Cat, Ice Spice, and Doechi on their Scarlet Tour.
In spring 2024, Taimi is launching Queer Paradise, a celebration of all things queer. This is a series of live events in Southern California to celebrate diversity, sexual exploration, and dating fluidity. Each event in the series will be curated to give the full spectrum of groups within the LGBTQ+ community a space to express their authentic selves and be a part of the celebration.
Taimi’s partners for Queer Paradise include Hawtmess Productions, Eden Entertainment Group, Hump Events, Girls Gays & Theys, Damn Good Dyke Nights, and Gaybors Agency - all of which set the bar when it comes to queer events.
