Description

The Hallam Bypass Trail is a shared use path for cyclists and pedestrians running along the Hallam Bypass between Doveton and Berwick in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.[1]

Built in 2003.

Following the Path

Leave the Dandenong Creek Trail east of, but not far from the Dandenong CBD and travel down the signed route: McCrae St, Box St, Grevillia St and Wattle Drive and enter and follow the reserves that span Eumemmerring Creek.

The path goes under the South Gippsland Highway and starts to run parallel and to the south of the Hallam Bypass. At this point the path splits to the left and right. Take the path to the right and cross the wooden bridge/boardwalk. The left path leads uphill to a footbridge over the bypass to nearby housing.

The path continues with no major difficulties and passes by the Fountain Gate Shopping Centre. This is not to be confused with Fountain Lakes of Kath & Kim fame, although parts of the show were filmed here. The trail ducks under the bypass to the north side of Fountain Gate Shopping Centre and crosses a strangely carved wooden footbridge.

A short trail (1.5km) leads to Parkhill Junction Plaza and Ernst Wandke Rd from the far side of the footbridge. The bypass trail continues parallel to the bypass but soon turns off and follows the Princes Highway. After passing by the Wilson Botanic Park and a small stand of pine trees, it ends at Lyall Rd near Berwick Place, a small shopping area with food and refreshments - particulary on the northern side at the old school.

Connections

Dandenong Creek Trail in the West. Dead end in the East at Lyall Rd.

Ernst Wanke Rd loop: By travelling 1.5km north along Lyall Rd and Harkaway Rd, a trail running alongside Ernst Wanke Rd is encountered. It heads west and 2km later, it mysteriously makes a small diversion up some side streets and arrives at Parkhill Junction Plaza back at Ernst Wanke Rd. The trail splits in two here but not obviously. One trail (1.5km) leads to the Hallam Bypass trail at Fountain Gate Shopping Centre. The Ernst Wanke Rd trail continues onwards and intersects the Hallam Bypass trail after 4.8km.

The start of the Birds Land Reserve to Lysterfield Park Trail starts at the very south end of Lysterfield Park, just 4.5 km by quiet roads from the the Hallam Bypass Trail. Leave the Hallam Bypass Trail using the freeway underpass just 400 m west of Ernst Wanke Rd. Follow the shared path, than travel along Drysdale Rd and Heathdale Rd. At the small roundabout turn left (north) up Glenwood Rd. Cross Belgrave-Hallam Rd and continue north up Jacques Rd; left (west) at Heatherton Rd and then right (north) up Reservoir Rd.
