Islam in North Macedonia

Muslims in Macedonia form over one third (33%) of the Former Yugoslav Republic's total population. So after Albania with (60% - 70%), province of Kosovo with (92% -94%) and Bosnia-Hercegovina (45% - 49%) it has the fourth largest Muslim population of 700,000 Muslims making up 34% of the countries total population, compared with other Eastern European countries. Some northwestern and western regions of Macedonia have Muslim majorities. During the times of Ottoman Turkish rule (1371-1912) over two thirds of Macedonia's population were Muslims.[1]
