Knox City Shopping Centre and Knox O-Zone (formerly Knox Towerpoint) in Wantirna South, Victoria, Australia is the largest shopping centre in the southern hemisphere by area [citation needed].
Development
The Knox City Shopping Centre is located on the corner of Stud Road and Burwood Highway in Wantirna South. The centre was opened on November 9, 1977. The centre included the four-storey Myer department store, a twin Village Cinema complex along with many other retailers.
Throughout 1989 and 1990 saw the centre double from its previous size as well as the addition of the newly created Knox District Centre (later to be known as Knox Towerpoint0. The refurbishment gave locals many more shopping opportunities, as well as the addition of Knox Tavern amid other restaurants. The development also created a new ten screen Village Cinema complex, replacing the existing Twin cinema complex.
Another refurbishment, worth $150 million, was bestowed on the centre through 2002, which saw both the shopping centre and Knox Towerpoint (now re-named Knox O-Zone) combine to a total of 142,422 square metres, making it the largest shopping centre in Melbourne in terms of size.
Currently there are over 350 retailers throughout the complex and 6,391 car parking spaces available.
Major stores include Myer, Coles, Kmart, Target, Lincraft, Harvey Norman, Dick Smith Electronics PowerHouse, Borders Books and Music, Toys R Us, Rebel Sport, JB Hi-Fi, Virgin Music, Blockbuster Video, and a 15 screen Village Cinema Complex.
Eateries also at Knox City Shopping Centre include two KFC and Hungry Jack's outlets, McDonalds, Red Rooster, Nando's, Subway, Krispy Kreme, O'Porto Chicken along with may smaller outlets. Knox Tavern is also located within the Knox O-Zone complex, along with two other popular bars.
The Knox O-Zone complex also houses several community services including medical and dental services, Centrelink and an RACV shop.
