Technical Note

from the "video format section" = "It has pixel dimensions of 320 by 240 and a uses 25 frames per second"

Should this say "30 frames per second", since Youtube, being an American company, follows the NTSC standard? Youtube's own help documentation recommends 30 frames per second. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 216.146.86.152 (talk) 17:58, August 23, 2007 (UTC)

Comment Spam

I find it amazing that no one has addressed the issue of comment spam on YouTube as of late. Any thoughts? Linns 03:41, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tom Dickson

Should we add Tom Dickson the creator of Blend tech ?

How does Youtube get money?

I was just on the site and didn't see any commercials or what so ever. How do they make money? Traffic?

I'm uploading a video right now and am looking at an ad for the Ford '08 Escape, so my guess eould be advertising + traffic.

Areas with YouTube Blocked

Accorrding to www.thegreatfirewallofchina.com, China has blocked YouTube. This website is also blocked so there is a small chance anyone from there can report this officially.

Political Section

Makes reference to Hiliary and Obama in a way that can be construed as negative. I recommened deleting the names of the two. I would do it myself, but the Temple University WLAN won't allow it for some reason.

RE: LittleKuriboh.

Yes. LittleKuriboh was the 8th Most suscribed person of all time with 40,000 subscribers, (although Youtube never recognized him as such)and deserves to be mentioned on the Youtube article.

Though now LittleKuriboh has been deleted from YouTube completely thanks to all of the users constantly flagging his videos for using a Japanese cartoon for footage. I added LittleKuriboh to the List of YouTube celebrities Zanders5k. 22:53, 1 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Influence on other sites

A request was made to better reference this section, which I removed, here's why: One of the ways to definitively reference this section would be to simply list a bunch of websites with "tube" in their name--we all know they exist and why--however, this would open the door to turning this article into a not-so-subtle promotional platform for such knock-off websites, which we have been trying to avoid. I do not believe we should attempt to further reference this section, unless those names can be kept out entirely. WorthWatching 20:08, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I completely disagree with your assertion that "we should [not] attempt to further reference this section". I agree that simply listing *tube websites would be a mess. It would also be original research. But because that one particular method would be incorrect and problematic does not relieve us of the burden of supporting our assertions with quality references. If the material is worth including in this encyclopedia article then I'm sure there are a few good references. --ElKevbo 20:15, 20 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, we're in agreement--you may have missed the conditional at the end: "...unless those names can be kept out entirely." Things ought to be referenced, but in this instance, I wanted to draw attention so we avoid having people take the easy road and just start listing *tube* websites, which would turn into a promotional zoo. WorthWatching 04:04, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha. We seem to be in agreement. I've got enough zoos to babysit right now. :) --ElKevbo 04:11, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm, I tried a couple times to add a preface to the section, so people seeing the notice don't decide to just list examples, but it didn't take; maybe I'm just doing it wrong. WorthWatching 04:57, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I removed this section - it was original research. Find me a reliable source noting that YouTube has had influence on other sites, and then we'll talk. --ZimZalaBim (talk) 01:15, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I concur with ZimZalaBim and ElKevbo. --Coolcaesar 20:28, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Slideshows of Official Renders of Characters

Hmmm....if anyone did slideshows of official renders of characters, are you sure that he or she should ask the owner's permission first? How they would ask is if they at least logged into the company website. --PJ Pete

On the encoding of audio in YouTube videos.

In this article about YouTube it states that YouTube streams its videos with the MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3 codec in monaural format once videos are uploaded by registered users. But it is possible to include audio in uploaded videos as stereophonic. This user did so; and my point of this comment is to change what it says in 'Audio format' in the headline 'Technical Notes'.

- -MootTK 08:48, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You can have YouTube videos with stereo sound, but you have to convert the file to the FLV format yourself if you want that. Two programs that do this (on Mac anyway) is ffmpegX and VisualHub. On Windows I believe Riva's FLV encoder will do the trick, as evidenced by this video on YouTube. Hope that should do it if you're going to add it to the article. -- M (speak/spoken) 12:55, 31 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

When I load youtube.com onto my address bar here in Bangkok, this message comes up: Sorry, the web site you are accessing has been closed by Royal Thai Police due to inappropriateness such as pornography, gambling or contain any information which is deemed to violate national security.

That's because Thailand doesn't have freedom of speech like the United States. Which is why nearly all the top Internet companies are headquartered here in Silicon Valley. Uploading

When i was trying to upload a video thats 9 minutes long, it worked, and when i trie to upload a movie above 10 mins, they said i couldn't. But i saw videos that were longer than 10 minutes posted on youtube before. So how do i upload it?

I am curious as well, but this is not the appropriate forum for that question. This page is for discussing the YouTube article on Wikipedia. You may be interested in the Reference desk. —METS501 (talk) 00:20, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
you need to have a director account to upload videos longer than 10 minutes. i think musician accounts also have this ability. i am not sure about gurus and comedians, though... 72.73.220.198 17:53, 2 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Would someone please remove M.U.G.E.N as being a copyright infringement, because it's not. if the author were to actually read the legality concerning M.U.G.E.N creations, this would be obvious to them.

If it was being listed only to describe one of the things YouTube has problems with, then that's alright, but the article seems to consider M.U.G.E.N (specifically characters created for it) to be a copyright infringement, which is untrue. If someone wants to debate this with me, then go ahead. --M.K. 22:43, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Delutube

I have noticed a link to Delutube, Deleted YouTube Video Viewer, a site suggesting they can display deleted or flagged YouTube videos. Skeptical that it is real and suspicious it's nothing more than a hoax, I have tried it probably 20 times over the last few months, but have never had any success--some random video shows up instead. Has anyone ever had this work at all? (Anybody popping in to say, "yes" who has zero Wikipedia editing history will be suspect as trying to perpetuate this apparently bogus website). If there is no confirmation from anyone it actually works, I think the section on it ought to be deleted. Plus, isn't it against YouTube's policy to offer access to deleted videos? WorthWatching 19:55, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Phishing?

As a frequent "YouTuber", I've noticed that several comments are appearing, as a form of spam email, using randomly generated usernames (This even happened to a video of mine, which it was quickly marked as spam)
Is it worthy of a mention in the article? --~~Neo 2.3 Hylan 09:04, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I've just received 2 (two) messages from randomly generated usernames, which are clearly spam. I'm adding the phishing section in, feel free to change it around; I don't often make this big a change to an article.

YouTube Poop

How come there's no information about YTP here? I think it's a rather large portion of the site and the only mention of it is a brief blurb on the CD-i pages. I think there should be a brief explanation of what it's all about at least. Gargomon251 10:52, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Make an article about YTP itself?
~~Neo 2.3 Hylan 16:11, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It might not last long, unfortunately. For now a section will do, if it needs to be expanded into an article we can do that. Hope it doesn't get removed -- M (speak/spoken) 22:46, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Viacom has demanded that YouTube remove a video that it claims to own even though it may itself have infringed on the original copyright. The video was originally posted online by Christopher Knight, a former candidate for a seat on the Rockingham County, NC board of education. In it he poses as a kind of Star Wars warrior vowing to protect local education from the federal bureaucracy. Soon afterwards, the video appeared on YouTube and then on VH1's Web Junk 2.0 -- without permission from Knight. Nevertheless, Knight said that when the clip appeared, he was "delighted" to be recognized by the cable channel and made a copy of the segment and posted it onto YouTube. He soon received a message from YouTube saying that Viacom had demanded that the clip be withdrawn and that if Knight continued to violate copyrights, his account would be shut off. In an interview with the U.K. tech site The Register, Knight said, "Viacom says that I can't use their clip showing my commercial, claiming copy infringement? ... As we say in the South, that's ass-backwards." should be added to the case section. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.26.100.14 (talk) 02:34, 3 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Downloading

I haven't been able to download youtube videos for the last few days. did youtube blocked the firefox applications somehow? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.235.65.64 (talk) 08:43, 3 September 2007 (UTC) I think the VideoDownloader plugin's broken. Clarity

"[...] registered users are permitted to upload an unlimited number of videos if they are under 18."

Is it if the users are under 18 or if the videos are rated safe for viewers under 18?

~ 24.37.160.221 :-: 21:18, 3 September 2007 (UTC) ~ I'm thinking the former. Most people would register themselves as over 18 anyway; I was 16 myself when I registered, even though my profile states I'm 20. >_>[reply]
