Atlacomulco is a municipalty located on the northwest part of México State and it is about 50 to 60 kilometers away from the capital of the state. The word "Atlacomulco" means “The place where the water wells are” and it comes from the Nahuatl culture.[1]

Nowadays, this municipalty is considered one of the most developed of México State because of its industrial zone and its proximity to Pasteje, an industrial plant which is a big source of employee of the state. It is also considered as the birthplace of many distinguished people related to religious and economic fields.[2]

The reason why Atlacomulco has gained popularity among México its because “The Atlacomulco group”, which is how many politicians of this municipalty have been unofficially known, includes many governors of México as Isidro Fabela Alfaro, Alfredo del Mazo Vélez, Salvador Sanchez Colín, Arturo Montiel Rojas and our actual governor Enrique Peña Nieto.[3]

History

In the beginning, Atlacomulco was ruled by Mazahuas since an unknown date. After the conquest Atlacomulco was entrusted to Francisco de Villegas, from Spain. The villagers from Atlacomulco did not have an important participation during the México Independence. On August 4, 1824, Atlacomulco is established as a municipalty and its first president was Agustín Peláez. Atlacomulco was formed by part of two haciendas, Toshi gave 18,716.10 hectares and El salto gave 1,539.93 hectares. The development of Atlacomulco started between 1911 and 1950 whit the construction of many schools on the seat of the municipalty and its communities.

Political geography

Atlacomulco is a municipalty located on the northwest of México State inside the coordinates of the parallels 19’43’37” and 19’43’67” of the north latitude. It is between the meridians 99’42’12” and 99’52’48” of the west longitude. Its altitude varies from 2,640 to 2,720 above sea level. Atlacomulco has a total extension of 258.74 square kilometers that represent the 1.19% of the total territory of México State.

Borders

Atlacomulco is bounded to the north by Acambay and Temascalcingo, to the east by San Bartolo Morelos and San Andrés Timilpan, to the south by Jocotitlán, to the west by Temascalcingo and El Oro. The distance between Atlacomulco and Toluca, the capital of Mexico State, is 63 kilometers aproximately.

Atlacomulco is part of the transversal volcanic axis on the sub province of lakes and volcanoes of Anahuac. Also, Atlacomulco is part of the Jocotitlan hill. The main mountains in Atlacomulco are Xitije, Atlacomulco, La Cruz, El Cielito, El Nogal, San Miguel, Tepari, Lashco and Cantaxi.

Rivers, lakes, basins and springs

Atlacomulco is part of the Lerma River and has 31 springs. Atlacomulco has many basins such as Lerma, Zacoalpan, Atotonilco, El Salto, Los Corrales, La Huerta, Mabati, Tierras Blancas, Santiago, Pueblo Nuevo y Ojo de Agua. The climate in Atlacomulco is sub humid with rainfalls on summer. The average temperature is about 19.9 °C maximum and 7.4°C minimum.


Demographics

In the 2005 census, Atlacomulco had a total population of 77,831 people and 8,829 of them speak an ethnic dialect.

Economy

The economy of Atlacomulco is based on the agriculture and stockbreeding. The principal crops are corn, wheat, barley and oats. It is important to mention that 60% of production of these products is for self consume and only 40% is for sale. San Lorenzo Tlacotepec is a small village where the people work on plants, principally plants for decoration.

Gastronomy

Among the culinary delights of Atlacomulco are barbecue and "consome" of ram, "carnitas" and a salad called "Juanes", composed with nopales, tomato, coriander, chicharron, avocado, cheese and berros. As for drinks, it is recommended savor the fresh waters of the traditional fruit and the traditional pulque.

Tourism

The Bird Island located on “El Salto”. It is part of a program preserving the ecosystem of Atlacomulco and also is the home of many birds in danger of extinction.

The springs called "Las Fuentes" are a great place for family recreation outdoors. Only 14 Kms. from Atlacomulco, on the shores of Lake J. Trinidad Fabela is located Park Bird Island, with appropriate facilities to enjoy walks countryside, a small island in the middle of the dam harbors bird diversity: pigeons, geese, ducks, Guinea chikens, among others, which give a name to .

Near to above, the "Parque El Ocotal", in the municipality of Timilpan, offers visitors, in the middle of beautiful forests (pines, a small zoo, a board to practice rowing and horseback riding, ideal for camping and meals countryside. Are available for a hotel, cabins and sports facilities for a pleasant stay.

Isidro Fabela Park is a natural park that belongs to the state and it is located in “Cerro Viejo”

Las Fuentes Park is located on the municipal seat.

Among craft work in the region are pieces of pottery jars, pots, barrels and "comales", hats, "sarapes" and miniature musical instruments, products can be purchased at the Sunday tianguis.
