Is the fact that Bill Parcells is mentioned on the Sopranos encyclopaedic material? I think not. Srnec 04:11, 6 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Parcells is a big enough figure that it's not really newsworthy that he's been mentioned a few times on a TV show. He's mentioned all the time on TV.-66.254.232.219 05:35, 8 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nicknames

Before someone from the northeast freaks out, the nicknames of "The New Jersey con-man" and "The glorified gym teacher" are not a joke. They are known nicknames for him in the Dallas area.


The New York Jets section begins: 'Although Parcells had decided to leave New England, his contract did not allow him to coach anywhere else. The New York Jets sought Parcells to take over their football operation after a 4-28 record under Rich Kotite. Parcells instrumented a remarkable turnaround in his first year with the Jets." What does this mean? How did he get to the Jets if his contract did not allow it?

Nicknames

Those stupid nicknames are only propagated by one hack radio DJ in the Dallas area. They are not widely recognized and have no business being in this entry.

I suspect some Cowboy fans would be happier if a cyrogenically frozen Tom Landry was reanimated to coach their team

I agree with keeping them out the article. If the mainstream media (e.g. ESPN, Dallas Cowboys TV/radio network announcers) start using those nicknames (which is doubtful), they can be added back. 71.113.46.139 20:47, 13 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is this really npov? How do we know these are popular nicknames with local Dallas fans?

Agreed. Those are nicknames, but they are not widely popular, even in Dallas, EXCEPT with ONE group of people that meet the following criteria - 1) they listen to 1310 am The Ticket radio station (like I do) & 2) they DON'T think that Mike Rhyner is a spare + a complete & utter beating (not me! - the old man SUCKS).

Sorry, those nicknames still bother me. They are editorial commentary that don't belong in an encyclopedic entry. The radio station in question is a very small part of the national and international audience that I think wikipedia is intended to hit. Plus, okay, so one guy on that station doesn't approve of him (Parcells) and made up these nicknames for him. If wikipedia was populated by people's nicknames (or what-have-you) of those they don't approve of, it would be full of unreadable trash.

Eric Mangini?

I don't think Eric Mangini ever worked under Bill Parcells. Can someone check that out? I don't think he did.

Oh, never mind, he did work with the Jets when Parcells was coaching.

Mike Nolan?

I put together the Coaching tree article and I still haven't been able to figure out where Parcells had influence on Mike Nolan. Nolan was brought up and groomed by Dan Reeves in Denver and joined the Giants staff at the same time Reeves took over Parcells head coaching job there. I don't think Nolan should be on the list. Just Vikings

For that matter, how can anyone consider Jim Fassel a "Parcells disciple"? No, Mike Nolan never served under Parcells, nor did Marvin Lewis or Nick Saban. Saban was on Belichick's staff in Cleveland, but is definitely not a "former Parcells assistant". Marvin Lewis is, if anything, a Cowher guy. Caped Crusader 18:54, 22 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay I found out that Mike Nolan served as DC under Al Groh for one year on the Jets in 2000. Groh is considered to be a disciple of Parcells, but its not a very strong connection between Nolan and Parcells. Just Vikings

Flu?

Also, during 2006 he refused to take off his jacket during a game for good luck and recieved [sic.] the flu.

I fixed this to use a little more idiomatic American English -- I don't think I've ever heard of anyone receiving a disease -- but I still have no idea what it's saying. Usually I associate catching influenza with being too lightly-dressed. Why on earth would keeping his jacket on lead to him to catch the flu? Cheers, PhilipR 05:24, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I removed it the absence of any explanation. If someone thinks it's an important detail and needs to be in there, fine, but please explain why keeping his jacket on subjected him to the flu. Also you need to cite sources. Cheers, PhilipR 05:12, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I remember this game, the postgame was covered on NFL network. Parcells has some sort of superstition about not taking off his jacket/coat/windbreaker, if he is wearing one, if the team is not winning. He left it on for quite some time and became ill due to overheating or something...

"Dallas Coach"

Probably not important enough to be included in the article, but is there a reason why Parcells is the only NFL head coach not to appear in the Madden series of video games? The Dallas coach in the series is just a generic cipher called, well, "Dallas Coach". (Actually "DALLAS COACH", all uppercase). All the other coaches are present and correct, and yet Parcells is completely missing - and he's not even replaced by a "Bill Purcell" or suchlike, so one's attention is drawn to his absence. I'm wondering if there was some kind of union agreement over the rights to use coaches' names and photos or something, and he was the only one who opted out? Or maybe EA Sports didn't offer him enough money, or he's closely linked with a rival series of games, or he intensely dislikes John Madden as a person, or he just plain didn't want to be involved, or something else which might make for an interesting bit of trivia...?

--Parcells is not a member of the NFL Players/Coaches Association. Therefore, EA Sports does not have the rights to use his name in their games.

--and for the record, neither is Bill Bilichick, which is why he is labeled "NE Coach"

ESPN

I saw on NFL Network that Bill Parcells has been hired by ESPN as an analyst. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this? I was thinking maybe he would take Irvin's job on Sunday NFL Countdown (so I put Parcells name on there.) ESPN made a statement during the 11:00 sportscenter on 2/17 that "Michael Irvin is no longer working at ESPN".Tigersfan1992 18:04, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Coors Light?

Why is there a link to the "Coors Light" article in the "See Also" section? Is there some connection between Bill Parcells and Coors Light? I couldn't find any references to any connection. If there is a valid reason for this link being present, is should be explained.
