Wowowee is a noon-time variety and game show being broadcast from Studio 3 of the ABS-CBN Broadcast Center in Quezon City, Philippines. It originally premiered on February 5, 2005.

The show airs live weekdays from 12:30pm-3:00pm Philippine Standard Time (PST). On Saturdays, the show is aired from 12:00pm-3:00pm PST. The show also airs worldwide via ABS-CBN's The Filipino Channel. In North America, the show is tape-delayed to air weekdays starting at 4:25 a.m. EST (GMT-5) and is also repeated at 3:10 p.m. EST and in Primetime at 9:10 p.m. EST. On Saturdays, the primetime repeat occurs at 9 p.m. EST.

The show is currently hosted by Willie Revillame, with his co-hosts Pokwang, Precious Lara Quigaman, and Valerie Concepcion. The show is also accompanied by the ASF Dancers.

Other members of the production includes Bentong, Owen Garcia, the floor director, and Anna Santos Feliciano, the show's choreographer who manages the ASF Dancers. The show itself has gone through several hosts that have in one way or another left the show for various reasons.

Format

Wowowee is divided into 3 major components, the first half of the show, the entertainment acts, and the 2nd half - Bigtime Pera O Bayong. The 6 contestants for Willie of Fortune are all picked from an audition held usually the day before, while the 50 contestants for Bigtime Pera o Bayong are usually picked from a pool of potential contestants who visit the studio to possibly have a chance to be on the show. As a combination variety/game show, Wowowee also prominently features music and entertainment acts; after the Pasalog round on weekdays and after the opening on Saturday. These performances are often accompanied by the ASF Dancers. The performances on Saturdays usually feature more major acts than the weekday episodes. The contestants who participate in each episode usually have a specific trait common throughout all of them, such as for example, people whose job involve a microphone, and people whose jobs require the wearing of boots.

First Half

Willie of Fortune

Willie of Fortune (a pun on the popular American game show Wheel of Fortune and the host Willie Revillame) is the first "event" on Wowowee. In this "round", the 6 contestants introduce and talk about themselves. Contestants who are energetic, humorous, or overall interesting people usually are given extra cash prizes. The 6 contestants also can show off their talents (performances may vary, the most common performances are music-based, such as singing or dancing).

Questune

The 6 people selected earlier compete in pairs in rounds of Questune - where the in-house keyboardist plays a portion of a song, and the first person to name the song correctly wins 1 point. If the player can correctly sing the exact lyrics from that portion of the song, they will receive a 2nd point. 2 points are required to win the round - meaning that someone with a very good knowledge of the song can easily win in 1 song.

The 3 winners win PhP 5,000 and advance to Sinong Kumanta Ng Kantang 'To, while the losing contestants receive parting gifts from the show's sponsors.

Sinong Kumanta Ng Kantang 'To?

Sinong Kumanta Ng Kantang 'To? (Who Sang This Song?) is very similar to Questune, except instead of naming the song, the contestant must identify the original artist of the song. 2 points are required to win.

The winner advances to the Bigat 10 round as the "Tigasen". The winner also receives another PhP 5,000.

Bigat 10

In the Bigat 10 round, the "Tigasen" competes in a series of trivia questions against the 10 people selected from the audience. 2 contestants at a time are brought up to face the Tigasen. If the Tigasen gets a question right, he or she does not lose any money from the PhP 100,000 jackpot. If a Bigat 10 contestant gets a question right, the player will receive PhP 10,000 from the Tigasen. In the Bigat 10 game, being the last person up has a special advantage, as a raffle is held to move one of the 10 players to go up last. Whoever gets the final question right gets to play the Pasalog bonus round. This means, a player could steal PhP 10,000 and a chance to play for larger prizes from the Tigasen by only answering one question. If the Tigasen goes undefeated, he or she will win an additional PhP 25,000.

Before June 26, 2006, the Bigat 10 game was slightly different, with contestants going one at a time, the pot being PhP 50,000, and if a question was answered correctly by a Bigat 10 player, he or she received PhP 3,000 from the pot and PHP2,000 from the house.

Pasalog

In Pasalog, the Bigat 10 player or Tigasen from earlier has a chance at winning different prizes provided by sponsors, including a progressive cash jackpot increasing every show if not won. Dice containing logos and symbols are placed into compartments in beach ball like spheres referred to as Pasalogs. The balls are then passed around the audience (or sometimes rolled around the stage if there isn't enough time). When the pasalogs are returned, the compartments are opened. If the dice have a symbol or logo facing up, the player wins the corresponding prize. Pasalog was originally played with a similar cube shaped container, but was later switched to the beach ball design.

Guess the Presyo, Get the Premyo!

Guess the Presyo, Get the Premyo! (Guess the Price, Get the Prize) is a new game which debuted on the November 19, 2007 episode of Wowowee. 5 players picked from the audience are given a chance to win a prize by guessing what the price of the prize is. The first digit is revealed, and the 5 contestants have 90 seconds to guess what the price is. After each guess, the player is told if their guess is higher or lower than the actual price. If the price isn't guessed in the 90 seconds, a final 10 seconds is given, and the digit that's just a fooled number is eliminated, only remaining the correct digits. If a person guesses correctly at any time, the player wins the prize.

Bigtime Pera O Bayong

Elimination

The elimination round of Pera o Bayong is similar to that of Merrygalo. Fifty (50) contestants are asked questions answerable by Oo (Yes) and Hindi (No). People who have the correct answer move on to do the same process again, while people who answered wrongly are eliminated. This process is repeated until only one (1) person is left. The last person standing wins PhP 10,000 and moves on to the jackpot round.

Jackpot Round

In the Jackpot Round, there are 10 bayongs (bags), and the contestant picks 3 from them. He or she would then choose one bayong to be his/hers. Then, the contestant and Revillame would have a series of bargaining sessions, with different amounts of cash offered in exchange for the bayong.

The main prizes are:

  • PhP 1,000,000
  • a house and lot
  • PhP 1,000,000, a house and lot, and a brand new car

Other bayongs contain unusual items like peanuts.

Discontinued games

Wowowee has had 2 other major games occupy the 2nd half of the show - all of which started off with 50 contestants answering some sort of multiple choice question (with everyone who answered wrong getting eliminated);

Merrygalo

Merrygalo replaced the highly controversial Wilyonaryo game on October 8, 2007.

Elimination

The first portion of Merrygalo is very similar to Wilyonaryo, the 50 contestants are asked a Yes or No question on a specific category, with the contestants having 5 seconds to make their decision. Sometimes contestants are offered a chance to switch their answer. The people who have the correct answer move on to do the same process again, while the people who answered wrong are eliminated. This process is repeated until only 1 person is left. The last person standing wins PhP 10,000 and moves on to the jackpot round.

Jackpot Round

In the Jackpot round, there are 12 regalos (which are boxes, resembling Christmas presents), and the contestant picks 3 of them. Each of the boxes either contains a circle, a square, or a star. When the first box is revealed, if it contains a star the player wins PhP 10,000, if it's a square the player wins PhP 5,000, and if it contains a circle, the contestant wins nothing.

On the second box, the player is given an option to switch out the box in exchange for a box which is not selected. If it contains the same shape as the first, he would have an additional PhP 50,000. In case of having different shapes, a star gives the player another PhP 10,000, a square wins another PhP 5,000, while a circle will make the player return his winnings from the first box.

On the 3rd box, the player is again given an option to switch out their box from the remaining boxes. If all 3 boxes contain only 1 shape, i.e. 3 stars, 3 squares, or 3 circles, the player wins PhP 1,000,000, PhP 500,000, or PhP 250,000, respectively. If the first two boxes are dissimilar, having a shape similar to the one inside the second box wins the player an additional PhP 50,000. Else, the player wins another PhP 10,000 for a star or PhP 5,000 for a square. If the box contains a circle, the player returns his total winnings.

Wilyonaryo

Wilyonaryo (a pun on milyonaryo - the Tagalog word for "millionaire" and Willie) became entangled in one of the more larger controversies associated with Wowowee when it debuted in August 2007. The 50 contestants who competed had to predict the result of surveys answered by audience members with remote controls. Some contestants were offered a chance to stay where they were, switch their guess, or walk away with a cash offer before the answer was revealed.

The remaining contestant then played a game of Pinball, but this game had 2 purposes. Firstly, it decided how much money the contestant could walk away with guaranteed even if they don't win a jackpot. The game also decided which of the 12 colored wheels would be used for the next portion (which were placed in an order specified by the player beforehand). The player could also make 2 predictions on which tube of the bottom of the machine the ball would end up when the ball goes out of play (winning a PhP 20,000 bonus if the player guessed right). The wheel in the compartment above the corresponding tube would be used for next portion of the game.

The player was then offered a chance to either leave with an amount of money offered by the host and the money won from the Pinball game, or take what was inside the wheel. If it contained a 2, the player would win PhP 2,000,000. If it contained a 1, the contestant won PhP 1,000,000. If it contained a 5, the contestant won PhP 500,000. If it contained a 0, the contestant won nothing.

Other Discontinued Games

  • Isang Talon Isang Sagot - the 3 Questune contestants were asked questions, but the contestants jumped to "buzz in". 5 points (later 3) were required to advance to the Bigat 10 round. The game was later replaced by Sinong Kumanta Ng Kantang 'To?
  • Call A Kolokoy - a Questune contestant and 2 other randomly selected audience members were asked questions, but the "buzzers" were located above them. If the Questune contestant won, the contestant advanced to the next round and won a prize, and the two audience contestants would get PhP 500. If one of the other contestants won, both won PhP 5,000. This game was later replaced by Isang Talon Isang Sagot
  • Doblado Sigurado - played after Bigat 10, Doblado Sigurado offered a chance for the contestant to double their winnings. A box containing 5 chips (each one being black and white) would be passed around the audience, and the contestant would predict how many would come up White and how many would come up Black. If the prediction was right, the contestant's Bigat 10 winnings were doubled. If it wasn't, the player walked away with only PhP 10,000. This game was later replaced by Pasalog.
  • Green Cross - one of the Pera o Bayong contestants was randomly picked from the group, and won PhP 5,000. In one of 3 bags was PhP 20,000, and the player had to guess which one contained the prize. If the player picked correctly, he or she would win a total of PhP 25,000. The game was sponsored by Green Cross, a Filipino soap brand.
  • Sketch On The Rocks - A contestant attempted to draw picture of a word selected out of a fishbowl while other contestants attempted to guess what it was, but the paper on the board constantly scrolled up. After 30 seconds, the drawer would move to the "rock board", where the player attempted to write out what the answer was, but the board shook making it more difficult. If the guessers could figure it out, the drawer won a the prize that he or she selected beforehand. If the guessers couldn't figure it out after 30 seconds on the "rock board" and after 5 more final seconds, the drawer did not win anything.
  • Act-U - A contestant tried to guess what a celebrity guest was trying to act out.

Wowowee's special shows

Sometimes, Wowowee has had special editions and spinoffs aired:

Alay sa Kapamilya

Alay sa Kapamilya was a program organized by ABS-CBN as an observation for the PhilSports Arena stampede victims. It preempted Wowowee for six days while the network decided over the fate of the variety show. The shows were a solemn tribute to the victims, featuring performances by ABS-CBN regulars. Eventually, ABS-CBN decided to temporarily cancel the variety show until its return on March 11, 2006.[10]

Pangarap at Tagumpay, Mga Kwento Sa Likod ng Wowowee

In the leadup to the March 11, 2006 relaunch of Wowowee, ABS-CBN aired a 5 episode drama miniseries entitled Pangarap at Tagumpay, Mga Kwento Sa Likod ng Wowowee (Dreams and Success, The Story Behind Wowowee). The five-episode drama package was broadcast March 6 to March 10, 2006 in Wowowee's usual timeslot. The show dramatized the lives of past winners and how their lives had changed since their appearance on the show.

Honoring Overseas Filipino Workers

In several occasions, the show has paid tribute to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW's) serving across the world. On the August 2 2006 episode, Wowowee with cooperation with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) produced a special edition saluting and featuring female OFW's who returned from Lebanon where a war was present in that country. They were all invited to attend and even participate in the show that day. The contestants during the first half that day were close friends of the OFWs, while an unspecified number of OFW's participated in "The Ultimate Pera O Bayong". All the winnings won in during the show were combined together and evenly distributed to all of the OFWs in the audience, with the grand total of winnings being PhP 1,390,000.

On August 5 2006, instead of the usual celebrities appearing on the Saturday edition in "Willie of Fortune", close friends of OFW's working in Lebanon played. Before "Pasalog", a Chinese businessman donated PhP 1,000,000 to all of the players.

Controversies

The Philsports Arena Stampede

At around 06:30 AM local time on February 4 2006, at least 73 people were trampled to death and more than 300 were injured when a stampede broke out at the PhilSports Complex (formerly ULTRA) in Pasig City, where the first anniversary celebration of Wowowee would be held at noon. The crush began when the organizers of the show began handing out tickets to people in the crowd, many of whom had been camping outside the stadium for days.

Willyonaryo Controversy

Host Willie Revillame reveals extra films inside a wheel during Willyonaryo, which questioned the validity of the game.

On the August 20, 2007 episode of Wowowee, a controversial incident occurred during Willyonaryo which lead people to think (including the host of a rival program) that the game was, or could be rigged.

Illegal Recruiting Scandal

On the January 6, 2007 episode of XXX (an investigative news program also produced and aired by ABS-CBN), it was revealed that Ace Vidanes, the program's contestant coordinator, made arrangement with illegal contestant recruiters to recruit contestants for the show's Bigat 10 in a 60-40 Deal. 60% of winnings would go to the contestant, and 40% would go to the illegal recruiters. [11] A former Bigat 10 contestant revealed this setup to Wowowee and XXX. An entrapment operation was arranged and illegal recruiters were caught. The illegal recruiters appointed Ace as their boss - but before correspondent Julius Babao had the chance to get the side of Ace, the show's management decided to terminate Vidanes' employment. On the January 8, 2007 episode of TV Patrol World (another news program produced by ABS-CBN), a former contestant showed himself in the news program as someone who was tapped by Ace Vidanes as a contestant for Wowowee. He was asked by Ace to pretend that he is a shoemaker in order for him to join the noontime show since they are looking for shoemakers for a particular episode.

Eda Nolan Wardrobe Malfunction

On the May 12th, 2007, episode of Wowowee, to promote ABS-CBN's new teen comedy Gokada Go!, cast members from the show preformed a dance number as part of the entertainment segment of the show. The tube top of one the dancers, Eda Nolan, became loose, exposing one of her breasts. Although producers claimed that Eda was wearing a skin-colored bra, Wowowee received a 3 day suspension from the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board.[12]
