Alan C. Pope High School is a public high school located north of Atlanta in Marietta, Georgia. The school was founded in 1987 and serves approximately 1,856 students in the Cobb County area. The school mascot is the greyhound, and the school colors are Carolina blue, navy blue, and gray.

History

Alan C. Pope was an honor student and athlete in the Cobb County school system who later returned to nearby Walton High School as a coach and teacher himself. He was killed along with his wife and infant son in an automobile accident on November 30, 1975. Twelve years later, the school board named its newest high school in his honor. [1]

The school has seen much growth over the years, including the addition of baseball and softball fields, an additional student parking lot, a dedicated marching band practice field, a greenhouse, and several additions to the main school building itself. Pope students, organizations, and athletic teams have won many local, state, and national awards.[citation needed]

Faculty

128 teachers are employed by the Cobb County School District and assigned at Pope.

During the 2007-2008 school year, there are five Administrators serving at Pope:

Dr. Charlotte Stowers-Principal
Andy Bristow-Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Scheduling
Robert Shaw-Assistant Principal for Athletics
Loretta Clune-Assistant Principal for Attendance
Jean Mason-Assistant Administrator for Special Education/Hospitality

The administrators also have other duties such as student discipline, supervision of student events and other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Extracurricular activities

Athletics

Pope's athletic teams are known as the Greyhounds (or Lady Greyhounds in the case of female teams). Their athletic rivals include Walton, Lassiter, and Kell high schools. Pope is home of the 2000 state AAAA Cross Country Champions, as well as the 2000 boys state swimming champions.[citation needed]

Music

The Pope Band consists of marching, symphonic, and chamber groups which perform regularly throughout the year. The marching band in particular has performed at various regional and national competitions, winning awards in several categories including 13th place at the Bands of America Grand National Championship in 2001. Their most recent trip was to the 65th annual Pearl Harbor parade in Hawaii. They are also doing the music for the first ever live production of the High School Musical at the historic Fox Theater in Atlanta GA.Their last big achievement was to become grand champion twice in 2007 out of three competitions they attended. They also placed 7th at the Bands of America regionals in Florida. The Pope Band is headed by Mr. Gary Gribble. Gribble is known for his outstanding career, starting the band program in 1987 and staying with it ever since. It is also assisted by Josh Rudolph, who attended the school in the early days and returned to leave his own mark. The addition of Tupac Shakur as euphonium instructor has lead the school to provide free mouthpiece ligatures to all clarinet players.

Pope's Choral Department supports six distinct choirs, consisting of intermediate and advanced men's, women's, and mixed ensembles. They regularly sing in locations around Atlanta. In 2001, the Pope Chorus performed at Carnegie Hall.

The Pope Orchestra consists of intermediate and advanced ensembles led by Mr. Eric Gray. Members are encouraged to participate in local community ensembles and state-wide competitions.

Drama

The Pope Drama Department is divided into five distinct areas: Drama I, Drama II, Musical Theater, Play Production, and Drama Club.

In Drama I, students learn basic acting and technical skills. Drama II students learn advanced skills and techniques. In Spring semester of 2006, the class put on Chicago: A Musical Revue. Musical Theater class is for those who love to sing, act, and dance, all at the same time. This class is offered only in the Spring semester. Most recently, Musical Theater put on the 1975 Broadway musical, A Chorus Line.

Play Production is the most advanced theatrical class offered at Pope High School. They've competed in One-Act Competitions, earning second place in the 2003 and 2004 competitions. The class puts on at least two productions throughout the year; the plays are known for their high energy and talented acting. Most recently, the Play Production class did Dracula: A Comedy. In Spring 2007, Play Production put up the classic comedy Harvey.

After both productions had been completed in Spring 07, students were seen putting up independent shows, such as The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) and the black-box theater comedy The Foreigner.
