"Fergalicious"
Song
B-side"Paradise"

"Fergalicious" is the second single from pop/R&B singer Fergie's debut solo album, The Dutchess. It features Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am, who also produced the track. "Fergalicious" was not officially released as the second single in the UK, where "Glamorous" was officially made the second single instead.[2] However, "Fergalicious" still managed to chart at number 26 on the UK Official Download Chart and will be released as the fourth single there, over a year after the song's initial release, as a double A-side with "Clumsy". This is possibly due to the huge success of "Big Girls Don't Cry" in the UK which reached #2, saved the album, and even made it reach a new peak position at #18. As of January 1, 2008, the single has sold 2,364,125 copies.[citation needed]

Plot summary

Fergie is one of the leading causes of mental illness in men. Although their ultimate desire is to engage in sexual intercourse with her, she will not allow them to physically manifest their feelings for her and so they must instead derive satisfaction from photographs of her, proving that she is neither easy nor sleazy. Fergie has stated repeatedly that she has reasons why she "tease{s} 'em". It has been observed that any one man's attraction to Fergie is generally fleeting, ebbing and flowing in a manner comparable to the changing of the seasons. However, despite her penchant for teasing men, she is not promiscuous. It is assured that all rumours to the contrary are fictitious in nature as she is known to draw the line at "blowing kisses", which has resulted in a coma-like state in some men. Those who are not comatose form a miles-long queue so that they may observe her incomparable ability to entertain. As previously noted, Fergie is often cited as the cause of mental illness in men. In particular, she is believed to cause a temporary lapse in memory functioning whereby men, upon encountering her, claim a prior knowledge of her and call her "Stacy", a name by which she is not known to have ever gone. It should be emphasised that she is in fact not Stacy, but rather (in her own words): "the F to the E, R, G the I the E", and males of the species would be wise to remember that there is no other female with a comparable sense of rhythm (or, as she aptly puts it, that "can't no other lady put it down like {her}"). Fergie can often be found at a personal fitness facility engaging in various athletic activities so as to keep her body in the best of condition, to which platonic male acquaintance will.i.am is believed to be a frequent witness. Other men have been known to form a long queue so that they may watch her as she engages in her fitness-related activities. Men who have more than a fleeting desire to "get to know" Fergie are advised to be patient. Patience may result in what is known as a "taste", which is guaranteed to be tasty tasty and laced with lacey. In fact, it has been suggested that this "taste" may be so incredibly tasty as to cause permanent incapacitation. Fergie often finds herself being admired by large crowds of African-American men gazing longingly at her bosom and at her buttocks. She has stated that she is not seeking to be involved in any sort of dramatic situation, nor is she trying to steal other women's significant others. Fergie has also stated that although she may appear slightly conceited and has admitted to repeated bragging regarding the willingness of men to perform oral sex acts for her, she is simply trying to prove to the general public that she cannot be treated in a manner comparable to that in which a "regular" person may be treated, due to her incredibly delicious nature.

Song information

The song peaked at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 several months after its release. However, "Fergalicious" managed to top the Pop 100 chart and spent fourteen weeks in the top ten of the Hot 100. "Fergalicious" was extremely successful as a digital song. In fact, it's one of the very few tracks which have been certified 2x platinum in the U.S., thanks to the heavy downloads. This achievement was very easy as, in January 2007, it sold 294,000 downloads in a single week, being immediately certificated platinum and holding the record for the most downloaded song in a single week. As of December 2007, "Fergalicious" has been downloaded for over 2,300,000 times in the U.S. only, being in the Top 10 of the most downloaded songs in the U.S. history. "Fergalicious" was not released in the U.K. or Ireland in 2006 but was later released as a double A side with "Clumsy" in October 2007. The song heavily samples "Give It All You Got" by Afro-Rican and "Supersonic" by J.J. Fad.[3] It also features elements from "Night Train" by James Brown and "It's More Fun to Compute" by Kraftwerk (both sampled in "Give It All You Got"). will.i.am's opening line is an interpolation of the opening line of 2 Live Crew's "Throw The D." The word "Fergalicious" is a portmanteau of the words 'Fergie' and 'delicious'. Spelling is a large part of the song's lyrics, with vocalists spelling Fergie's name, the word 'delicious,' and a misspelling of the word 'tasty' (the vocalist spells it as 'tastey').

On December 4, 2006, Fergie and will.i.am performed the song live at the 2006 Billboard Music Awards and Big In '06 Awards. In 2007, this song was nominated by rock station WNEW as for "most annoying song" of 2006, but, apart from this, it was nominated for various other awards: in fact, it won the "Sexiest Video of the Year" at MTV Australia Video Music Awards and, always with this song, Fergie was given the award for "Best International Video - Artist" at Much Music Video Awards. "Fergalicious", for unknown reasons, was not released in the UK or Ireland.

Controversy

The song caused controversy between Fergie and Nelly Furtado. In the lyrics, Fergie wrote: "But I ain't promiscuous", which Nelly Furtado thought had referred to her successful single.

Later, in the song "Give It to Me", Nelly wrote a verse, which she confirmed,[4] directed at Fergie.

Music video

The video premiered on MTV on October 24, 2006 and premiered on Yahoo! Music on October 31, 2006. The music video was filmed in Hollywood, and directed by Fatima Robinson, who also directed the "My Humps" music video. will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas also appears in the video, which features Fergie in a Willy Wonka-inspired factory, called "Fergieland" filled with various types of candy. The video starts with factory workers packaging pink and purple boxes of "Fergalicious" candy. In the beginning of the video, Fergie sings in a field of candy canes with many other people wearing strange outfits and dancing. Throughout the video, she wears a tan and khaki girl scout outfit (it could be noted that Fergie herself was a girl scout[citation needed]), sports a black one-piece swimsuit while lying in a pile of candy, (often in a kaleidoscope view) works out in a colorful gym, sings in a room filled with lollipops and other candies while dressed like Shirley Temple, and pops out of a cake while wearing a tiny blue swimsuit with gems encrusted on the exterior. She then starts watching two women wrestle in ice cream before joining them at the end of the video.

2006 Billboard Music Awards

At the 2006 Billboard Music Awards, Fergie reported that there would be a surprise at her performance. It was revealed that the surprise was her outfit, the only outfit produced for but never used in the music video.[5] When Fergie was asked to pick her own outfit, she decided to wear her "blue dress" very similar to her red shirley temple outfit seen in the beginning of the video.
