Vengeance 2005 was the fifth annual Vengeance pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). It was held on June 26 2005 at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The official theme song was "Happy?" by Mudvayne.[2]

The main event was Batista versus Triple H in a Hell in a Cell match for the World Heavyweight Championship, which Batista won after a Batista Bomb.[3] The main matches on the undercard were John Cena versus Chris Jericho versus Christian for the WWE Championship and Kurt Angle versus Shawn Michaels.[4][5]

Report

Background

Batista as World Heavyweight Champion.

The main feud heading into the pay-per-view was between Triple H and Batista, with the two battling over the World Heavyweight Championship. After Batista defeated Triple H at WrestleMania 21,[6] they continued to fight over the World title at the next RAW pay-per-view, Backlash, which saw Batista retain the title.[7] Following the aftermath of Backlash, a series of Gold Rush Tournament matches took place with Kane, Shawn Michaels, Edge, and Chris Benoit winning in the first round of the tournament.[8] In this round, Benoit forced Triple H to tap out to his submission finisher, the Crippler Crossface.[8] On the May 23 2005 edition of RAW, Batista faced Edge, who had beat out Michaels and Kane for an opportunity at the World title.[9][10] Batista retained the title, as he pinned Edge after a Batista Bomb.[9] Following the match, Triple H attacked Batista with a sledgehammer and challenged him to a Hell in a Cell match. After making the challenge, Triple H hit Batista with a Pedigree on the World title.[9][10] The following week, Batista accepted Triple H's challenge for a Hell in a Cell match.[11][12] On the June 6 2005 edition of RAW, Batista and Triple H signed the contract for their scheduled match at Vengeance, which would be for the World Heavyweight title in a Hell in a Cell match at Vengeance.[13][14]

John Cena as WWE Champion.

The other main feud heading into the event was between John Cena, Chris Jericho and Christian, with the three battling over the WWE Championship. On the June 6 edition of RAW, John Cena's SmackDown! tenure came to an end when he became the first wrestler selected by the RAW brand General Manager, Eric Bischoff, in the draft lottery.[13][14] Christian interrupted Cena, who was introduced as RAW's newest member in Chris Jericho's segment the Highlight Reel, when Christian called Cena a poser.[13][14] Though, at the Royal Rumble, Cena and Christian had an encounter, in which Christian claimed that he was a better rapper than Cena.[15] At the time, Cena was a member of the SmackDown! brand and Christian was part of the RAW brand. Over the next months, Christian began cutting promos denouncing Cena as a 'poser'.[16] Cena rebutted Christian's comments by doing a rap of his own to Christian, which resulted in the two brawling in the ring.[13][14] The same night, Cena immediately entered a feud with Bischoff when he refused to participate in Bischoff's "war" against the upcoming Extreme Championship Wrestling reunion show.[14] On the June 13 2005 edition of RAW, Bischoff booked a WWE title match between Christian and Cena at Vengeance, though Jericho protested the idea of Christian being the contender to face Cena for the title.[17][18] Later that night, Cena and Jericho were placed in a tag team match and faced off against Christian and Tyson Tomko, a match which they won after Cena got the pinfall.[17][18] After the match, Jericho turned on Cena and attacked him. After the assault, Bischoff changed the original match to a Triple Threat match at Vengeance.[17][18]

One of the main matches on the undercard was between Kurt Angle and Shawn Michaels. At the start of the year, Angle and Michaels both participated in the battle royal match at the 2005 Royal Rumble pay-per-view event.[19] During the match, Michaels eliminated Angle. In retaliation, Angle came back and eliminated Michaels, attacking him afterwards.[19] The two engaged in a feud, which led to an Interpromotional match at WrestleMania 21 (at the time Angle was part of the SmackDown! roster and Michaels belonged to the RAW roster). At WrestleMania 21, Angle got the win over Michaels when he forced Michaels to submit to an Ankle Lock.[20] On the June 13 edition of RAW, Angle was revealed to be the second draft pick for the RAW brand.[17][18] That same night, Michaels challenged Angle to a WrestleMania rematch at Vengeance, which Angle accepted.[17][18]

Event

Victoria who faced Christy Hemme at Vengeance.

Before the event went live on pay-per-view, Rosey and The Hurricane (w/Super Stacy) defeated The Heart Throbs (Antonio and Romeo) in a match taped for Sunday Night HEAT.[21] The first match that aired was between Carlito and Shelton Benjamin for the Intercontinental Championship. After back and forth action between the two, Carlito undid one of the turnbuckle's padding and Benjamin did a Stinger splash, which resulted in his head hitting the exposed medal. Carlito pinned Benjamin with a roll-up, allowing Carlito to successfully retain the Intercontinental Championship.[3][4]

Next was a match between Victoria and Christy Hemme. The match saw Victoria lift Hemme in the air and drop her down with force. Each wrestler controlled different parts of the match, but the bout came abruptly to an end when Victoria countered Hemme's sunset flip into her own pin variation, where she got the successful pinfall by using the ring ropes for leverage.[3][4]

The third match of the night saw Kane in a match with Edge where both men took the upper hand. One spot in the match included Snitsky involving himself in the match, as he hit Kane with a big boot. Though moments later, he was quickly taken out by Edge after he hit Snitsky with his Money in the Bank briefcase. Following the events in the match, Kane was able to hit a chokeslam and pin Edge.[3][4]

Shawn Michaels, who defeated Kurt Angle in a WrestleMania 21 rematch

This bout was followed by a WrestleMania 21 rematch, in which Shawn Michaels defeated Kurt Angle. In a brawling match, Angle had an Ankle Lock hold applied on Michaels. Moments later, however, Michaels recuperated and hit Sweet Chin Music on Angle, afterward pinning Angle for the win. As the match ended, both men were given a standing ovation.[3][4] After the Michaels and Angle match, an in-ring segment took place between RAW's ring announcer, Lilian Garcia and Viscera. During the segment, Garcia proposed to Viscera, who rejected Garcia's proposal after he favored The Godfather's advice about the life he would miss out on, if he'd gotten married. Afterwards, Viscera left with the Godfather and his hos and left a saddened Garcia crying in the ring.[3][4]

The fifth match was the encounter of John Cena, Christian, and Chris Jericho in a Triple Threat match for the WWE Championship. Tyson Tomko, who accompanied Christian, was ejected out of the match. The match saw all three of them take the advantage over one another. A spot in the match included Jericho applying the Walls of Jericho on Cena, but released the move and hit Christian with a springboard dropkick after Christian got up on the ring apron. The last moment in the match saw Jericho dodge an Unprettier by Christian, which resulted in Christian being thrown directly to Cena, who was prompted directly onto Cena's shoulder and Cena retaining the WWE title, after he pinned Christian with an FU.[3][4]

The final match of the event was a bout between Batista and Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship. The key spots of the match included Triple H getting a hold of a steel chain and using it to choke Batista, Triple H hitting Batista in the back with a steel chair wrapped with barbed wire which caused Batista to bleed from his back, and Batista managing to hit Triple H in the mouth after a sledgehammer shot. In the match, it saw Batista and Triple H take the upper hand over one another. Batista retained the World title, after he managed to hit Triple H with a spinebuster onto the steel steps, which was proceeded with a Batista Bomb and a cover for the win.[3][4] After the Hell in a Cell match, Triple H stood to his feet and was given a standing ovation by the audience.[22]

Aftermath

On the June 30 2005 edition of SmackDown!, Batista was revealed to be the last pick in the 2005 WWE Draft Lottery;[23][24] as he made a surprise appearance after John "Bradshaw" Layfield (JBL) celebrated his victory in a six-man elimination match to win the new SmackDown! Championship, after the WWE Championship was now part of the RAW brand.[23][24] On the July 7 2005 edition of SmackDown!, it was revealed that Batista would defend the World Heavyweight Championship at The Great American Bash against JBL.[25][26] At the Great American Bash, Batista was disqualified for attacking JBL with a chair. JBL won the match, but did not win the title because a title never changes hands by count out or disqualification.[27]

Following Vengeance, Eric Bischoff vowed to make John Cena's stint on Raw difficult, he "hand picked" Chris Jericho to take the WWE title off Cena by booking a match between Cena and Jericho at SummerSlam.[28][29] Before their scheduled match, Cena and Jericho took the upper hand over one another.[30][31] During their feud, even though Cena was portrayed as the face and Jericho as the heel, a vocal section of live crowds nonetheless chose to boo Cena during their matches, including at SummerSlam where Cena retained the title, after an FU.[32]

After a successful tag team win at Backlash, in which Shawn Michaels and Hulk Hogan defeated Muhammad Hassan and Daivari.[7] Michaels and Hogan were placed in tag team match against Kurt Angle and Carlito on an episode of Raw. The match saw Hogan and Michaels get the victory.[33] During the post-match pose, Michaels superkicked Hogan, which knocked Hogan to the ground and turning Michaels heel for the first time since returning to the company in 2002.[33] The following week, Michaels challenged Hogan to a match at SummerSlam,[28][34] which Hogan accepted.[35] Hogan defeated Michaels at SummerSlam, therefore retaining his record at the event.[36]

The feud between Edge and Kane came to an end when Edge was put in an angle with Matt Hardy. On the July 11 2005 edition of RAW, Hardy, who at the time was unemployed by WWE,[37] made a surprising appearance, interfering in a match between Edge and Kane.[29][38] The following week, as both Edge and Lita were walking towards the ring before a scheduled Steel Cage match against Kane, Hardy attacked Edge from behind.[30][39] On the August 1 2005 edition of RAW, Vince McMahon officially announced Hardy's return to WWE, adding that Hardy would face Edge at SummerSlam.[40][41] The following week, Hardy made his in-ring return, defeating Snitsky.[42][43] After the victory, Hardy was attacked by Edge, and as he was being carried backstage, Hardy counterattacked Edge in the locker room.[42][43] At SummerSlam, Edge defeated Hardy, causing Hardy to have "excessive blood loss."[44]
