5FM is a SABC radio station mainly based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Formerly known as Radio 5, the country-wide broadcasted station evolved from a commercial station, LM Radio, which had been operating from Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) in neighbouring Mozambique. Radio 5 first went on the air on October 13, 1975 after Mozambique gained its independence. Radio 5 was established with 8 mediumwave transmitters, catering for the pop music audience. The name indicated the SABC's 5th radio channel at that time.

5fm plays a wide variety of music, to help increase listenership throughout South Africas dynamic cultures. At any time, a mixture of hiphop/urban/rap can be mixed with house music followed by Britney or Madonna and ending with Linkin Park or Cradle of Filth.

The 5fm DJ's themselves signify the market the radio station is trying to appeal to: Young trendy adults with a belief in South Africa. It should be noted that Teens and older adults also listen to the station.

A large amount of the music played (+- 25%) is local music, thus promoting the talent the country has to offer. 5fm has a large identity throughout South Africa, often its playlists and top 40 airplay chart placings will determine the success of an artist in South Africa.

  • Sureshnie Rider is on weekdays 4:00-6:00 to awaken listeners with a taste of coffee.
  • The weekday morning 6:00 - 9:00 rush-hour show DJ is Gareth Cliff with Leigh-Ann Mole on news, Sias DuPlessis on sport news and Mabale Meloi on traffic reports.
  • Elana Afrika follows with the 09:00 - 12:00 show.
  • Ian F and Sasha Martinengo do the afternoon lunchtime show between 12:00 - 16:00 together as the duo F and Martinengo alongside Sureshnie with news.
  • DJ Fresh does the afternoon Rush-hour show with Poppy on news, Catherine on traffic reports and Mlu on sport news 16:00 – 19:00.
  • Nicole Fox is on 19:00 - 22:00 Monday to Thursday nights. Monday nights with Nicole at 20:00 - 22:00 is the UK Top 40.
  • Koula hosts the late night 22:00 - 01:00 slot on Mondays to Thursdays. Tuesday nights with Koula is the SA/International Rock Chart top 10 at 23:00 - 23:45
  • Roger Goode hosts Friday nights with dance music to get your jive talking into the weekend spirit.
  • Mlungisi Dlukulu hosts the The Fifth Element Show on Friday nights 22:00 - 01:00 zooming in on the hottest new, unsigned local DJs and never-heard-before productions on the horizon featuring house music productions.

  • Nicole Fox hosts 5FM TRL Radio for listener's song requests and playlists alongside featured guests and featured unsigned bands, artists or DJ's. Features global and local news in entertainment and possible broadcasts anywhere exclusive to listeners on Saturdays 10:00 - 14:00
  • Kabelo features The Asylum with weekend spirit and dancehall music Saturdays to Sundays 14:00 - 17:00
  • Catherine Strydom hosts 5FM Live with exclusive live music from local and international music talent Saturdays 17:00 - 18:00
  • Roger Goode features more dance music on the 18:00 - 22:00 Saturday Surgery.
  • Vinyl Frontier presents electronic music in different sub-genres from DJ's around South Africa and the world on Saturdays 22:00 – 01:00 exclusive to clubbers at heart.
  • Christina Knight hosts Knight Skool for late night extras at 01:00 - 04:00
  • Koula hosts the 5FM Top 40 on Sunday for SA's top songs as well as a featured SA musician.
  • Poppy Ntshongwana hosts the new music space for 5FM on Sundays at 17:00 - 20:00
  • Euphonik features My House Sunday's wind down at 20:00 - 22:00
  • Erica Elle does the weekend wind down at 22:00 - 01:00 on Sunday.

Former popular DJ's who have since left the station include:

*Cleone Cassidy, after a successful TV presenting and radio career (TV shows included Love At First Sight, Toyota Top 20 and Top Billing) Cleone moved from 5fm to Heart 106.2 in London but left suddenly in 2002 after a tragic accident. A few years later - in between presenting for TV in europe with High TV - she founded Podcastdjz after realising that there was no outlet for South African music in the UK. It became a popular website in the expatriat community and was the first South African podcasting website. Podcastdjz eventually merged with an internet radio station in the UK when Cleone became a Partner and Director however due to creative differences the partnership was dissolved within a year. Cleone is still active with voice over work & TV presenting as an International Correspondent for SA TV.
*Mark Gillman, Retired from the breakfast show, which got taken over by Gareth Cliff. Article
*Alex Jay, moved to Johannesburg's 94.7 Highveld Stereo in 2002 after being let go due to "his image no longer complying with that of the station"
*Mark Pilgrim, who also moved to 94.7 Highveld Stereo when he was fired from his Saturday morning show after joking about the then-romance between DJs Gareth Cliff and Nicole Fox.
*Kevin Savage, moved to Cape Town's KFM
*Barney Simon, passionate Rock DJ was let go for similar reasons as Alex Jay. He now is a popular DJ at the acclaimed campus radio station Tuks FM, and also presenst a weekly evening slot on Radio 2000 showcasing new local music and talent.
*Derek "TheBandit" left 5FM at the end of March 2005. He is now with Jacaranda fm doing an 80's party show Saturday nights from 18h00 - 22h00 under the name of Richardson. TheBandit continues to bring Electronic Dance Music to people via his Podcast at http://www.soundrepublic.co.za
*Tony Blewitt, After 5FM he had a short stint at 94.7 Highveld Stereo and is currently on ClassicFM.
*Martin Bailie, aka 'The Little Irish Devil', a popular breakfast show DJ. His original 'Breakfast Team' included producer Barney Simon, newsman Jeremy Thorpe, sportsman Glenn Hicks and comic Amanda Forrow. He broadcast 5FM's first stereo broadcast and the SABC's first live simulcast on TV and radio. He also worked on 702, 604, Springbok, SaFM, Peace Radio and Cape Talk. On television, for over a decade, he hosted the hugely popular 'TellyFunQuiz', What-a-Win, Video2, AM2Day and Small Talk. He now broadcasts for BBC Radio Cornwall in the UK.
*Chris Prior, Also know as the Rock Professor is now back on Radio with The Rockfest 1465 AM while also running a small firm which assists companies with Credit Control problems during the day time.
*Darren Scott, currently on Jacaranda 94.2's breakfast show.
*Phil Wright, Still playing Heavy Metal and Hard rock on the The Rockfest 1465 AM.
*Rafe Lavine, Spent some time with The Rockfest 1465 AM but left recently (2006) to devote more time to his family and business.
*Jason Roberts, became a TV presenter, presenting shows on The Travel Channel, E! Entertainment Television (USA), NBC Europe, worked as a sports commentator for Eurosport, presented for BBC’s ‘Holiday’, National Geographic’s ‘Explorer’s Journal’ and was the voice for BBC Worldwide’s ‘Wild Spirits’ and ‘World Yachting’ series. He remains an international, entertainment correspondent for SA Television.

*Tich Mataz, left the station after being involved in a deportation scandal in 2001. He was found to have fraudulently obtained his South African identity document but managed to secure a work permit to resume his broadcasting career in South Africa. He did some radio and television productions in Zimbabwe before being appointed Media Consultant to Swaziland King, King Mswati III, in August 2006. Mataz currently resides in Swaziland with his new Kenyan wife.[1]

  • MTV 5fm TRL Radio served by KFC- Hosted by Nicole Fox (Saturday 10:00 to 14:00) It features posted notes, entertainment news around the world, special guests, unsigned local artists/DJ's/bands, most requested music videos as well as songs in Africa and listener playlists. This replaced The Pepsi World Chart Show that previously filled this slot.
  • Vodacom Hi 5 @ 5 (The 25 most voted songs as voted by the listener) - Hosted by Dj Fresh On The Fresh Drive (Weekdays at 17:00)
  • Hit 40 UK ( The 40 biggest songs in the UK) - Hosted by Nicole Fox (Mondays 20:00 to 22:00)
  • 5FM Rock Chart top 10 in South Africa and around the world. Hosted by Koula. (Tuesdays 23:00 - 23:45)
