  • A collision at the start in which Ralf Schumacher's Williams was launched into the air after hitting the back of Rubens Barrichello's Ferrari caused a pile up at turn 1, wiping out 8 cars.
  • Heinz-Harald Frentzen was disqualified for leaving pit lane under red light
  • Enrique Bernoldi was disqualified for using spare car
  • Rookie Mark Webber secured 5th place on his debut, at his home race. In the final stages of the race he was struggling, but managed to keep Mika Salo behind. After the race, he celebrated with an enthusiasm equal to winner Schumacher.
