His real name is Lelouch Vi Britannia (ルルーシュ・ヴィ・ブリタニア, Rurūshu Vi Buritania) and he was the eleventh prince and seventeenth in line for the throne prior to his mother's assassination and his sister's crippling in the same incident. The Order of the Black Knights

The Order of the Black Knights (黒の騎士団, Kuro no Kishidan) is a group of revolutionaries originally named Resistance, which strove to liberate Area 11 from Britannia and to restore it to Japan. When Zero takes over the group under his command and introduces them to the world, he announces that their goal is to "help those without power who are threatened by the more powerful".

Under the leadership of Zero, the Black Knights are able to rescue Kyōshirō Tōdō from the Britannian army and recruits Tōdō's group to augment the military strength of the group and gain the support of Kyōto House, who offer financial backing and higher quality Knightmare Frames for the Black Knights' cause. With expansions in both strength and number, the Black Knights began prepartions to invade Britannia.

Though Zero soon reorganizes the organization to form a structured hierarchy and chain of command, the Black Knights appear to rely heavily on Zero and his masterful strategies and seem to be unable to act effectively when Zero has not given them specific orders. During the Battle of Tokyo, the group falls apart when Zero suddenly takes leave to rescue Nunnally Lamperouge. Several key members of the order are arrested by Britannia while others went into hiding. At the beginning of season two, the Order of the Black Knights are all apparently aware of Zero's true identity; when and how they learned this information is unknown, though Kallen Stadfelt did see Zero's face near the end of episode 25.

Former members of Ōgi's group

  • Age: 26 (first season) 27 (second season)
  • Zodiac Sign: Pisces

Shinichirō Tamaki (玉城 真一郎, Tamaki Shin'ichirō)

Voiced by: Kazunari Tanaka (Japanese); Michael Lindsay (English)

  • Age: 24 (first season) 25 (second season)
The hot-headed member of The Black Knights, he was initially skeptical about Zero and his plans. He is currently the leader of the second special squad at The Black Knights. Despite his skepticism, he shows strong support for Zero once he reveals the Black Knights' ultimate goal although he would sometimes get too carried away- during the rebellion near the end of the first season, he ordered several students of Ashford Academy executed before being interrupted by escalating events. He dreams of being a bureaucrat, and has said that if he didn't have his dream to aim for, he would probably have become a Refrain user. He is currently incarcerated in R2.

Former Britannia personnel

Diethard Ried (ディートハルト・リート, Dītoharuto Rīto)

Voiced by: George Nakata (Japanese); Jamieson Price (English)

  • Age: 31 (first season) 32 (second season)
  • Zodiac Sign: Aquarius
  • Blood Type: AB
The head of information, espionage, and public relations at The Black Knights. A former producer and member of the Press Bureau Staff of Hi-TV, a Britannian television station, he is a graduate of the Imperial Britannia Central University's Faculty of Law. He was extremely interested in Zero when he first announced himself and his goals to the public, later joining the Black Knights, wishing to witness and document Zero's campaign to overthrow Britannia and rule the world. In the very first episode it is shown that he also harbors contempt for the royal family of Britannia and its supporters. Apparently, his only motive for joining the Black Knights is to see the world change; he comments to Lakshata Chawla that "Britannia is a finished product", and that he would rather take part in creating something new.
He is currently in hiding with Lakshata and Sayoko in the Chinese Federation, being wanted by Britannian law enforcement.
Lakshata Chawla (ラクシャータ・チャウラー, Rakushāta Chaurā)

Voiced by: Masayo Kurata (Japanese)

An Indian scientist and developer, creator of the Knightmare Frame, Guren Nishiki, and head of technology and development at The Black Knights. She is also noted for her extensive work on medical cybernetics, and appears to have been a former acquaintance of Lloyd and Cecile. When Zero met her for the first time, he notes that she is not fond of speaking about the past. She also made the new jumpsuits for the pilots of the Black Knights, which increases their survival rate substantially.
Her works also include the Fukushahadō (輻射波動, lit. radiation surge) weapon on the right arm of the Guren Nishiki and the Gefjun Disturber (used against Suzaku in episodes 18 and 24 to disable the Lancelot). She was also able to upgrade the Gawain Knightmare Frame to a fully-operational unit.
Like Diethard, Lakshata is also wanted by Britannian law enforcement. She is hiding with Diethard and Sayoko in the Chinese Federation.
Sayoko Shinozaki (篠崎 咲世子, Shinozaki Sayoko)

Voiced by: Satomi Arai (Japanese); Kim Mai Guest (English)

  • Age: 24
  • Zodiac Sign: Scorpio
  • Blood Type: O
A kindhearted Eleven, she serves as a maid to the Lamperouge siblings in their residence. She also helps teach Nunnally origami and assists in taking care of her. She is later revealed to be a spy working for Diethard and applies to join the Black Knights in the season finale. She was originally Milly's personal maid, but was reassigned to Lelouch and Nunnally when they were placed under the Ashfords' care. The DVD releases for the series occasionally a segment called "Sayoko's Diary", which depicts her view of daily life at the Ashford Academy. Among other things, her limited perception of some events has caused her to believe that Lelouch has many sexual fetishes including crossdressing and incest, and she apparently has something of a crush on Suzaku.[1] After the incident of season one, The Black Knights are forced to go on hiding, with Sayoko among the escapees. She is currently with Diethard and Lakshata.

The head of military operations at The Black Knights, Kyōshirō Tōdō is a chequered former general and an extremely talented fighter. He is nicknamed Kiseki no Tōdō (奇跡の藤堂, lit. Tōdō of Miracles) due to him being the only person to have won a battle against the Empire of Britannia during the war and most remarkably with the lack of Frames at his disposal. This event would later be known as the miracle of Itsukushima. He is followed by the Shisei-ken (四聖剣, lit. Four Holy Swords), an elite unit consisting of four of his most devoted followers. He was recently captured by Britannian forces and was scheduled for execution until he was freed by Zero, The Black Knights and the Shisei-ken. He was Suzaku Kururugi's former instructor when the latter was a child and is one of the few Japanese people who understand Suzaku's ideal. Tōdō is often seen bearing a katana at his side.

His attempt failed, but bought Zero enough time to detonate Babel Tower.

Kyōto house

The Kyōto house is a secret society of Japanese individuals working against Britannia, which seeks for Japan to gain independence from Britannia. They have supported anti-Britannian resistance groups such as the former Japanese Liberation Front organization and, currently, the Black Knights, and also supply these groups with equipment, supplies, and even Knightmare Frames such as the Burai, Gekka, and Guren Nishiki, to help in their struggles against Britannia.

Kaguya Sumeragi (皇 神楽耶, Sumeragi Kaguya)

Voiced by: Mika Kanai (Japanese)

The young head mistress of the Kyōto house, and a supporter of The Black Knights. Despite her age and physique, she proves to have a strong will within.
She has admired Zero ever since his debut and upon their meeting, she reveals her intention to marry him and believes he will win the war against Britannia. He had known both Nunnally and Lelouch when they first visited the Kururugi Shrine, and knows of Lelouch's identity as Zero, and has given support and assistance to him in his struggle against the Britannia Empire. Currently he is not Imprisoned or In hiding

Other members

Kizuna Kagesaki (影崎キズナ, Kagesaki Kizuna)

Voiced by: Akio Suyama (Japanese)

The third squadron leader of the Black Knights.

Britannia Empire

A royal kingdom and international superpower, which possesses about one-third of the entire world. Territories under Britannian rule include Area 11, The Americas, Greenland, New Zealand, Philippines, islands from the Pacific Ocean and a Middle Eastern-like country, recently conquered and renamed as Area 18. The Britannia flag features a lion and a snake intertwined, and they represent "king" and "death and rebirth" respectively.

Imperial family

Several members of the Britannian military (L-R) including: (Unnamed), Darlton, Guilford, Cornelia, Euphemia, Suzaku, Lloyd, Cecil, Jeremiah, Villetta and Kewell.

The numerical order of the princes and princesses of the imperial family is given by the status of their mothers, or the queens. For example, Cornelia and Euphemia are the Second and the Third Princess, respectively, while Lelouch is only the Eleventh Prince. It can be inferred that Cornelia and Euphemia's mother had a higher status than Marianne Vi Britannia, the mother of Lelouch and Nunnally. Also, the numbering of the imperial princes and princesses is sorted by gender. For example, Euphemia is the Third Princess and Clovis is the Third Prince. They are able (the princesses at least) to elect a personal guardian called "Knights" who are given high authority and placed directly under their command, with their own unit. Cornelia's Knight is commanding officer Guilford who, along with her, command a unit of Gloucesters.

Charles di Britannia (シャルル・ジ・ブリタニア, Sharuru Ji Buritania)

Voiced by: Norio Wakamoto (Japanese); Michael McConnohie (English)

  • Age: 62 (first season) 63 (second season)
The 88th emperor of the Britannia Empire and Lelouch's father. He installs his children in important positions in the Empire to see their true abilities. He views equality as an evil that must be dispelled and encourages social battle to maintain evolution within the society. As such, he publicly supports inequality and calls for competition and fighting so as to create progress. Shortly after his mother's death, Lelouch questioned why the Emperor did not try to protect Marianne. Irritated with Lelouch and considering his son to be nothing without him, the Emperor sends both Lelouch and Nunnally to Japan as political hostages. Although the series has left this ambiguous, the Emperor seems to be somehow aware of major events concerning Lelouch without being informed of them, especially those related to the Geass. The Emperor himself also posses a Geass of his own, but unlike Lelouch's Geass on the left eye, his Geass is present in both eyes. He uses his Geass to erase Lelouch's memories as Zero.
Marianne Vi Britannia (マリアンヌ・ヴィ・ブリタニア, Mariannu Vi Buritania)
  • Nickname: "Marianne the Flash" (for her superior Knightmare Frame piloting skills)
The late empress of the Britannia Empire and the mother of Lelouch and Nunnally. Her commoner status by birth caused her to earn the jealousy of other imperial wives and nobles, which Lelouch suspects had resulted in her murder.
Schneizel El Britannia (シュナイゼル・エル・ブリタニア, Shunaizeru Eru Buritania)

Voiced by: Norihiro Inoue (Japanese)

  • Nickname: "White Prince"
  • Age: 29 (first season) 30 (second season)
The second prince of the Britannia Imperial Family. When questioned by Lelouch, Clovis suggests that he knows the truth regarding Marianne's murder. The Emperor, despite being aware of the fact that Schneizel intends to challenge him, seems to be lenient toward Schneizel and lets his son do anything as he pleases. He is charismatic and caring despite his cold actions.

  • Zodiac Sign: Gemini
  • Blood Type: B
An elite Knightmare Frame pilot who is more collected than Jeremiah in battle. After the incidents of the first season, Villetta is sent by the Britannian military as a gym teacher to Ashford Academy. She is quite popular, also being head of the swimming club, which Shirley is still a member. Villetta is at Ashford Academy only to look out for Zero, though it looks like she’s keeping an eye on him for now.[2]

Voiced by: Yasuyuki Kase (Japanese); Keith Silverstein (English)

One of the members of the Imperial Army. He belongs to the Purist faction in the military and stood by Jeremiah's side in scapegoating Suzaku Kururugi. After the first appearance of Zero and Jeremiah's incomprehensible actions that lead to the escape of the terrorists with Suzaku, he led the rest of the Purist officers in an unsuccessful attempt at killing Jeremiah. • Nickname: "Earl of Pudding"
  • Age: 29 (first season) 30 (second season)
  • Zodiac Sign: Aquarius
  • Blood Type: AB
The developer of the elite Knightmare Frame Lancelot. His heart and soul are fully immersed in science, so much that he views Suzaku as a tool and part of the Frame that he pilots- this was later revealed as a way for him not to be reminded of the fragility of human lives and friendship. As a part of the Britannia military he and his team don't belong to the regular forces that are located in Area 11. Instead he has been given permission by the second prince of the Britannia Imperial Family, Schneizel El Britannia, to operate there and beyond the regular rules of the Britannia military (such as the laws forbidding the honorary citizens from piloting Knightmares). He has tendency of speaking mockingly toward others, which leads him to being scolded by Cecile sometimes. He is also revealed to be an earl of Britannian nobility and is nominated to wed Milly Ashford. However, his interest in Milly is actually because the Ashford family is famous for creating the Ganymede-type Knightmare Frames and hopes to get his hands on it through his connection with Milly. When this is revealed to Milly, Cecile remarks to her that Lloyd has no understanding of women. He commonly says the word "congratulations".
Cecile Crumey (セシル・クルーミー, Seshiru Kurūmī)

Voiced by: Kikuko Inoue (Japanese); Deborah Sale Butler (English)

  • Age: 24 (first season) 25 (second season)
  • Zodiac Sign: Virgo
  • Blood Type: O
One of Lancelot's developers and Lloyd's assistant. A kind-hearted woman, she is a good friend to Suzaku, helping him in his studies and making food for him such as onigiri mixed with blueberry jam, which Suzaku views with distaste. She often has to act as Lloyd's conscience, scolding him (or physically punishing him) for his unintentionally rude comments. She does not appear to hold herself back when scolding Lloyd for his rudeness, resulting in bruising for the latter. She proved herself near the end of the first season to be an able Knightmare Frame pilot, holding at bay an entire contingent of Black Knights sent to occupy Ashford Academy.
Bartley Asprius (バトレー・アスプリウス, Batorē Asupuriusu)

Voiced by: Katsuhisa Hōki (Japanese); Peter Spellos (English)

A balding army general, Bartley was one of the few who knew about the secret of the capsule stolen by the Resistance and the research conducted by the scientists at Area 11. After the assassination of Clovis, he was apparently stripped of his rank and sent back to Britannia as a prisoner, but recently made his return to the military under the command of Prince Schneizel.
Andreas Darlton (アンドレアス・ダールトン, Andoreasu Dāruton)

Voiced by: Kiyoyuki Yanada (Japanese); Travis Willingham (English)

A loyal confidante and close subordinate of Princess Cornelia. An extremely tall and well-built man with a diagonal scar running across his face, Darlton visits Area 11 as part of Cornelia's drive against Zero. Darlton does not particularly care for the racism running in the Britannian hierarchy, and made it clear to Suzaku that he didn't care if he promoted Britannians or Elevens, as long as they got the job done. He was one of the few Britannians that actually approved Suzaku's ascension to knighthood. Near the end of the first season, Lelouch managed to influence him with the power of Geass, causing him to disable Cornelia's Knightmare Frame during battle, and killed him immediately after he served the purpose. In picture book 8.75, Darlton was revealed to have multiple adopted sons, 5 of whom became the Gladstone knights.
Gilbert G.P. Guilford (ギルバート・G・P・ギルフォード, Girubāto. G. P. Girufōdo)

Voiced by: Yoshiyuki Kono (Japanese); Roger C. Smith (English)

  • Age: 27 (first season) 28 (second season)
A loyal confidante and close subordinate of Princess Cornelia. A slender, dark-haired and bespectacled man, Guilford visits Area 11 as part of Princess Cornelia's drive against Zero, and later informs Jeremiah Gottwald of the latter's demotion, giving him a choice of either restarting his career as a Knightmare Frame pilot or cultivating an orange field. Guilford is also Princess Cornelia's personal Knight.
Carares (カラレス, Kararesu)

Voiced by: Yūji Mikimoto (Japanease)

The current Governor-General of Area 11. A ruthless and cruel man, he wishes to have a firm grip on the region and routinely holds executions in the Imperial Gardens designed by Prince Clovis. He was killed by Zero during the Black Knight's escape from the Babel Tower when its falling debris crushes his G-1 mobile base, killing him and his staff.[3]

Voiced by: Saeko Chiba (Japanese); Kim Mai Guest (English)

  • Age: 17 (first season) 18 (second season)
  • Zodiac Sign: Virgo
  • Blood Type: A
One of the members of the Student Council. She is usually on a computer or reading. Nina has a fear of Elevens and was initially intimidated by Suzaku having joined the Student Council, but seems to have warmed up to him. She is also researching the possibilities of Uranium-235 as a fuel. She develops an intense crush on Princess Euphemia after the princess shifted a soldier's attention from Nina to herself during the Lake Kawaguchi Convention Center Hotel incident. Nina being insecured from the incident, she becomes too dependent on Euphemia as her emotional support. Which is the main reason Nina becomes quite emotionally and mentally unstable upon hearing the death of Euphemia. This caused her to modify the Ganymede Knightmare Frame and to equip it with a prototype nuclear weapon to try and inflict revenge upon Zero. During the siege at the end of the series, she has managed to halt any conflict at the school due to her possession of a prototype sakuradite enhanced nuclear weapon . She is now currently progressing in her research under the direct command of Prince Schneizel in the Britannian homeland where she was sent there, with her bitterness towards Zero not forgotten, but shown to be much Stable. The Knight of Rounds

File:D6b20fbde136-1-.jpg
The Knight of Rounds (L-R): No.1, No.12, No.10, No.9 (Nonette Enneagram), No.6 (Anya Earlstreim), No.3 (Zino Weinberg), & No.7 (Suzaku Kururugi)

When Suzaku Kururugi captured Zero, he went with him to the Britannian homeland, where he was promoted by the Emperor himself as a member of The Knight of Rounds, with his rank as No.7. The Knight of Rounds are Britannia's elite soldiers who can only be commanded by the Emperor himself and are not affected by normal orders. The No.1, the top, of the Knight of Rounds is also granted an area of control by the Emperor himself, and he or she is allowed to request any area under Britannian rule for this grant, which is what Suzaku aims for as he will choose Area 11 if he succeeds. It appears that there are only twelve of them, with Suzaku included, but only seven of the twelve members have introduced themselves. It is unconfirmed weather or not the other five members will make an apperance in the second season.

She pilots the heavy assault Knightmare Frame, Mordred. [6]
Nonette Enneagram

Voiced by: Satomi Arai (Japanese)

Another member of the Knight of Rounds, Nonette is ranked as No.9. She attended the military academy with Cornelia, who considers Nonette her sempai. She also happens to be one of the few people Cornelia fears.

The Chinese Federation is a major power to be reckoned with on the global playing field; its figurehead Emperor Tenshi once possessed absolute power. However, the eunuchs in her court are the ones running the country now. After General Cao’s unsuccessful attempt at creating a puppet government in Kyuushuu, the Chinese Federation again plots to take over Area 11 - without having to go to war with Britannia. To do so, they send eunichs like Gaohai to negotiate. It has also made a longtime hostile relations with the EU.

She likes teasing Shirley and is eager to discover Lelouch's weaknesses - enough to organize a school chase, much to Lelouch's panic. She is aware of Lelouch's actual identity as a former prince of Britannia, since the Ashford family were close supporters to his mother, Marianne Vi Britannia. This action, however, led to the family's nobility status being stripped. The Ashford family, wanting to restore their status, have two options in doing so: either reinstate Lelouch and Nunnally back into the royal family or to arrange a marriage to a noble. The Ashfords opt for the latter and arrange a marriage interview for Milly, in which she meets the man her parents wish her to marry: Lloyd Asplund. In the second picture drama special included on the DVD release, it is revealed that her grandfather and Nina's grandfather worked on the Io and Ganymede type Knightmare Frames. Other characters who live in Ashford Academy

Rolo Lamperouge (ロロ.ランペルージ, Roro Ranperūji)

Voiced by: Takahiro Mizushima (Japanese)

  • Age: 16
  • Height: 160 cm (5'3")
Lelouch's younger brother. A student at the Ashford Academy, he helps Lelouch travel on Rivalz's motorbike to his chess excursions. His most prized possession is a locket given to him by Lelouch on his birthday. He is the pilot of the golden Vincent Knightmare Frame.
In the PS2/PSP video game, Code Geass: Lost Colors, Rolo is sighted on Kaminejima island together with V.V., where, depending on the player's choices, Rolo teleports using his geass and kills the player character with a knife, resulting in a game over. In episode 2 of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, he is shown with a geass on his right eye, and displays a teleporting ability similar to his Code Geass: Lost Colors incarnation.
Arthur (アーサー, Āsā)
A stray cat befriended by princess Euphemia. Arthur is later chased through Ashford Academy by various students after wandering into the Lamperouge residence and escaping with Lelouch's Zero mask. The student council adopts him afterwards and builds a cat house for him within the school. The relationship between Arthur and Suzaku seems one sided as Arthur constantly tries to bite either Suzaku's hand or leg. Despite this, he saves Suzaku's life at the end of the first season when he jumps on top of Tamaki's gun when he is about to shoot Suzaku. He also went with Suzaku after he left Area 11 & has taking a liking to Knight of Round member, Anya.
Rai (ライ, Rai)
The player's character of the PS2/PSP game, Code Geass: Lost Colors. Although his name can be changed by the player in the game, his default name is Rai. An unknown youth who also holds the power of Geass. He suffers from amnesia and is discovered by Milly and Lelouch in Ashford Academy, where he fell unconcious after escaping a Britannian facility. It is later revealed that he is actually a person from the past (hundreds of years ago). His father was of Britannian royalty and his mother was Japanese, of the Sumeragi clan (same as that of Kaguya), thus resulting in ill treatment from his other siblings. In order to protect his mother and younger sister, he bound himself to V.V. in exchange for the power of Geass. His power of Geass is the same as that of Lelouch's, allowing him to make people obey his orders, and with it, he ascended to power. However, during a war with a neighboring country, while he was only trying to raise the fighting spirit of his people in a speech, he lost control of his Geass and accidentally ordered his people to fight to the death against the enemy, similar to how Lelouch used his on Euphemia. This order caused not only his people, but his mother and sister who he had wished to protect, to charge to their deaths, leaving him with nothing. In his loneliness and sadness, he used his power on himself to make him forget all of this and put himself to sleep inside a ruin similar to that found on Kaminejima. He was discovered by Bartley, who put him in the same facility in Area 11 where C.C. was held captive by Britannia. He awoke and used his power of Geass to escape the facility, ending up at Ashford Academy, where he was taken in as a temporary student as he tried to recover his lost memories.

Former Japanese personnel

Genbu Kururugi (枢木 ゲンブ, Kururugi Genbu)
Suzaku's late father, the last prime minister of Japan, and host for both Lelouch and Nunnally Lamperough seven years prior to the story. Reported in the media to have said that he has committed suicide in order to stop the all-out war against Britannia, but it was revealed that he was actually murdered by the hands of his own son, Suzaku. In the immediate aftermath of this incident, the truth behind Genbu's death was covered up.
Katase (片瀬)

Voiced by: Takehiro Koyama (Japanese)

Former general of the Japanese military, who leads the Nippon Kaihō Sensen (日本解放戦線, lit. Japan Liberation Front), another anti-Britannia organization consisting of former Japanese military personnel. He dies in episode 13, during the midst of a raid launched by Britannian forces against his warship. Despite being killed by a mine set up by Zero himself (without the knowledge of the rest of the Order of the Black Knights), his official cause of death is suicide. The group has been assumed to be eliminated by the Britannian military, though Zero either directly or indirectly led to their demise in several of the cases relating to their demise.
Kusakabe (草壁)

Voiced by: Masuo Amada (Japanese)

Former lieutenant general and a comrade of Tōdō. Seeking to draw attention to the fight the Nippon Kaihō Sensen is attempting against Britannia, he took control of a Britannian tourist destination, the Lake Kawaguchi Convention Center Hotel, holding several Britannian citizens and students hostages, while meeting Zero and Tōdō's strong disapproval as a result. Under the influence of the Geass, he is later forced to kill himself via impalement.

Other characters

Mao (マオ)

Voiced by: Takeshi Kusao (Japanese)

  • Age: 17
A Chinese orphan who was given the power of Geass by C.C. at the age of 6. His power differs significantly from Lelouch's - he has the ability to read peoples' minds without direct eye contact. Mao is mentally unstable due to not being able to turn off his power, causing him to hear the thoughts of every person within a radius of 500 meters. He wears headphones repeatedly playing recorded words of encouragement and gratitude from C.C. during his younger days in order to block out the thoughts around him. When Mao finally finds C.C. in Area 11, she tries to get rid of him in an amusement park but fails and Lelouch ends up rescuing her from Mao's chainsaw and using his Geass to make police officers shoot Mao.
Since Lelouch ordered the police to "shoot" instead of "kill", Mao manages to survive with the help of Britannia's advances in medicine. He then kidnaps and holds Nunnally hostage in order to lure out and eliminate Lelouch in an elaborate game. Lelouch and Suzaku collaborate and succeed in rescuing Nunnally and defeating Mao, but the latter reads Suzaku's memories, revealing the true fate of his father; he was killed by Suzaku and did not commit suicide. Lelouch orders Mao to shut up using his Geass and as Mao escapes from a shocked Suzaku and a surprised Lelouch, he is finally killed by C.C who shot him in the neck.
