Trip the Light Fantastic is the third solo album by British popstar Sophie Ellis-Bextor. It was released on May 21, 2007 following the release of the 2nd single, "Me and My Imagination", and lead single, "Catch You". The album was available on the internet on May 18, 2007, three days before the UK release date. It debuted inside the UK Top 10 at #7. "Today The Sun's On Us" was the 3rd single released from the album. It was released on August 13, 2007 and prompted the album to re-enter the charts at #99.

In one interview, Sophie stated that the 4th single will be either "If I Can't Dance" or "Love Is Here", with a possibility of a 5th.[3] She performed "If I Can't Dance" on DanceX, BBC One on 28 July 2007, making it seem that the decision for the fourth single was swayed towards this song.[4] In an interview with Digital Spy on 2 August 2007, Sophie confirmed that the fourth single was to be "If I Can't Dance".[5] However, the release of a fourth single from the album has been cancelled as Sophie's next single will be the first from her forthcoming album.

Album facts

  • There aren't any duets on the album. Only Dan Gillespie Sells is providing backing vocals for two songs on the album and Fred Schneider does vocals on one.
  • Sophie said that she wouldn't be posing on the cover but she later confirmed she would actually appear on it. She's said "It's sparkly, but hopefully it's got a bit more depth than just a nice picture of me on the cover!"[6]
  • She said that she worked with "a French guy named Dimitri" who was rumoured to be Dimitri From Paris, but turned out to be Dimitri Tikovoi.[7] She has also worked with Kerin Smith of theaudience.
  • The opening line in "If I Can't Dance" is, according to Sophie in an interview for the Times website, a famous quote by feminist anarchist Emma Goldman.
  • She wrote around 80 songs for the album, although, in an interview for The Times website admitted "that's probably how many demos exist. Overall, it's probably knocking on for triple figures I'd say".
  • She was said to have had plans to tour UK, Ireland, Europe and Australia during 2007 to support the album and promote the singles around the world. However, her UK tour was postponed, and her world tour was never officially confirmed.
  • The album has received great reviews by the press with 'The Sun' giving the album 4 stars, 'The Times' 4 stars and 'The Guardian' 4 stars. All the reviews can been seen on her official website and she received comments by 'Grazia' saying 'The third album from the best pop artist around' and 'Metro' said 'Album of the week.'
  • Sophie had plans to release a poppy version of "The Model" from Kraftwerk, but the band denied permission.
  • It was originally believed that only the UK would get the bonus tracks, but Australia got them as well. The album has gone top ten on the Australian iTunes Pop Album chart and top forty on the main album chart.
  • Despite the other albums were released in the United States via iTunes, this one was never released there.
  • The track 'If I Can't Dance' features in the 2007 film St Trinians.

Touring in 2007

Sophie originally planned embark on a 14 date concert tour beginning on August 14 and ending on October 5, 2007. The tour was scheduled to be a nationwide tour of the UK, including festivals such as T4 on the Beach (July 22), twice at V Festival (August 18 and 19) and at Summer Sundae (August 11).

However, the entire tour was postponed due to Ellis-Bextor's involvement with Take That's 34 tour dates. The Trip the Light Fantastic tour was rescheduled to resume in early 2008 "better and bigger than ever" according to Ellis-Bextor. Despite this, it was postponed once again and is said to be getting rescheduled for Autumn.
