Table- Census

I have added a few facts to the page with sources, however, while reading through the disscussion page, I noticed, that to increase the page's rating, a census was needed. So i surfed the internet found one, but I don't know haw to set it out. Can someone help please? 82.33.125.160 (talk) 17:46, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gloucester Flag

I heard a while back that Gloucester has a flag, which was the city's coat of arms on a bluebackground, but I've never seen it. I've lived in Gloucester since birth and have never seen it.

Is this flag mythical, in hiding or not yet produced?

I did a search and the only flag I could find that was related to gloucester was red and yellow. Go here if you want to see it. http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.worldofflags.co.uk/media/gbu0/prodsm/gloucester.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.worldofflags.co.uk/index.php%3Fapp%3Dgbu0%26ns%3Dprodidx%26ref%3DG&h=84&w=140&sz=7&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=T4J0gW8pEw9GJM:&tbnh=56&tbnw=93&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dgloucester%2Bflag%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den#

I imagine the flag you're talking about is mythical. Like you, I was born in gloucester and hasn't moved away, in my time here, I've never seen it.82.46.73.110 (talk) 07:14, 22 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation

The article gives the IPA for the name as [ˈglɒstə]. Is Gloucester therefore in a non-rhotic part of Gloucestershire? Man vyi 14:33, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

We are all Estuary speakers now. - mholland 02:58, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But South Gloucestershire is quite strongly rhotic! Scibah 09:29, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think mholland jests - no-one growing up in any part of Gloucestershire to my knowledge speaks Estuary English - unless we're talking about the Severn Estuary here! Even as far north as Tewkesbury the prevailing accent would be identified by anyone from another English region as sounding distinctly West Country. The main exception is RP spoken amongst the privately educated. Nonetheless the pronunciation of Gloucester as [ˈglɒstə] looks right to my untrained eye. Behind The Wall Of Sleep 13:46, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Privately educated? I'm Gloucestrian through and through, educated at the Crypt, but I speak with an RP accent. However, [ˈglɒstə] is definitely right. I agree that the local accent is rhotic. 77.99.233.169 17:38, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Fair point, now you mention it I realise the Patesians I know seem to talk RP also. I should have said something like "privately or grammar educated". The point I was trying to make (which I think we all more or less agree on) is that the local accent is rhotic in Gloucester, and Gloucestershire generally. Like everywhere in England quite a few people speak with an RP accent, and this reflects educational environment rather than locale. I'm banging on about this so readers new to all things Glos don't turn up expecting us to all talk like Cockney geezers. I can't address Man vyi's original query though, how come both rhotic and [ˈglɒstə]. But that is how they say it, mind. Behind The Wall Of Sleep 09:59, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, totally 77.99.233.169 03:38, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In any case the rhotic pronunciation is now given in the IPA. --NigelG (or Ndsg) | Talk 18:59, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Good article status, for this article

Anyone able to make this into a good article?? Comments would be appreciated! --SunStar Nettalk 23:15, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sports and Leisure Section

Do you think it would be better if this was increased to include all sports in Gloucester and add some detail about gloucester rugby and football? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 86.150.158.175 (talk) 18:36, 15 February 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Anyone know if this alleged Esporta in Brockworth is the same as Brockworth Sports Centre? (see TBC web site here) ? Behind The Wall Of Sleep (talk) 17:44, 22 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cultural item

I note that both Worcester & Hereford get a line or two regarding the Three Choirs Festival, but Gloucester does not. I think it definitely ought to; where should this go? --Wspencer11 (talk to me...) 18:00, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've added some stuff (plagarised from the Hereford page) as a start. Jjasi 07:21, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

County Map

this map is (possibly) in error. it shows the old gloucestershire county boundary prior to 1974. the southern most area was removed from the county to form the county of avon (the area surrounding bristol). it is now the administrative area known as south gloucesterhire which is a separate unitary authority created when avon was disbanded in 1996. inline with this the southern division of gloucestershire constabularly, gloucestershire ambulance service, gloucestershire fire and rescue, and other county based services were transfered to the the county of avon; the southern division now being the north avon area of the county of avon. all uk maps are now draw with gloucestershire represented without the southern most area. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.189.98.222 (talk) 23:06, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Districts of Gloucester

Cities such as Newport have detailed articles for each of it's suburbs and villages. Gloucester presently only has a few stubs and one detailed article, Hucclecote. If anyone would like to give me a hand in improving the articles about Gloucester's suburbs, please take a look at the category talk page at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category_talk:Districts_of_Gloucester Thanks Arawn 03:19, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If we do can I suggest we delineate on the basis of the local authority defined wards rather than the non-specific general area (as that can then lead to arguments over whether a particular steet/building/feature/park etc. is in a particular named area or not)? Jjasi 11:43, 30 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that would be my favoured general approach too. Arawn 01:49, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree also, in principle at least. I will comment further over at the category talk page. Behind The Wall Of Sleep 20:23, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, can i suggest we use this map : [[1]] to kick start the districts project, and then build it from there? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.111.63.125 (talk) 23:02, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think this is an excellent map and could be usefully linked from the Gloucester article. Re: the districts, I will link it from the the category talk page. Behind The Wall Of Sleep (talk) 10:20, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In addition to the map i suggester earlier, can i suggest this one: [[2]]. You will need to download the PDF file. In combination with the social housing map, i feel we will have a better idea of the districts to include, and exactly where they are in relation to each other within the city. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.111.53.147 (talk) 23:30, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gloucester Liberal Democrats

OK we've got a few spurious external links gathering dust at the bottom of this page but this one caught my eye. Is there a specific reason that the local lib dems' web site is appropriate to an encyclopaedia? I thought promoting specific political parties was a no-no here. Behind The Wall Of Sleep (talk) 10:32, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed! Alex McKee (talk) 00:01, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The Golden Valley Bypass

This stretch of the A40 is known locally as the above. But does anyone know why? Is it anything to do with the Golden Valley nr Stroud? I can't see how this road bypasses the River Frome. The road it does bypass (through Staverton, Gloucestershire and Churchdown) seems to be quite flat, and an unlikely valley. Any ideas? Behind The Wall Of Sleep (talk) 16:38, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/SO9022. A river runs through it, which makes it a valley of sorts. William Avery (talk) 17:18, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks William Avery, I can't tell you how long that had puzzled me, but I never thought to check the OS map! I've added this Golden Valley to the dab page at Golden Valley. Behind The Wall Of Sleep (talk) 18:41, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
