Sogang University is one of the leading research and liberal arts universities in Seoul, South Korea. The university is a relatively new school, founded in 1960, and the only Jesuit institute of higher education in the country.[1]

History

Sogang started as a college in February 1960, Fr. Kenneth E. Killoren, S.J. being its first President. Sogang College opened its doors on April 1960 with six departments : Economics, English Language and Literature, History, Mathematics, Philosophy and Physics. The first classes began on the 18 of April, 1960 with 166 students.

On December 1969, Sogang became a full University consisting of Liberal Arts College with six departments, College of Science and Engineering with five departments and Commerce College with three departments. Sogang University now consists of 10 graduate schools, 7 colleges, and 24 departments, since the openning of the Psychology Department on December 2004.

According to the start of the Korean law school generation, the student-number of the department of law is increased by 40 to 100 in 2006, and the department of law in the college of social science is divided into the college of law in 2007.

University symbol

The cardinal color, which is also the university color, symbolizes love, the holy spirit, martyr, loyalty, and victory. The silver chevron comes from the first letter 'ㅅ' of 서강(Sogang), representing the intellect spirit of Sogang, and an Ivory tower. 'IHS' comes from the first letters of the Greek name Ιησους(ΙΗΣΟΥΣ) of Jesus and is also found on the seal of the Society of Jesus, the Catholic order that founded the university. The medieval crown stands for the Virgin and Trinity, meaning wisdom.
