Template:Sound sample box align right Template:Sample box end "Can I Kick It?" was the third single from A Tribe Called Quest's debut album People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm. The song was not a hit at the time of its release but has become much more popular over the years, thanks in part to the wide exposure gained from its appearance as the theme music for the Nike commercial which launched the company's famous tagline, "Just Do It".[citation needed]

It contains a sample from Lou Reed's 1972 single, "Walk on the Wild Side".

Rapper Sage Francis covered this song on his album Sick of Waging War. Francis' version contained changes in some of the lyrics.

Music Video

The music video is very eccentric. The group, A Tribe Called Quest, and various others are literally kicking the word "it" while rapping in a film set, an alley, and a construction site. On the film set, they are seen playing with the dot for the "i" in "it". In the alley, they are walking around and are flipping on top of the "it". Other things, such as throwing drumsticks around and landing them on drums, are also seen in the video. They also decided to use a different beat for the video but is not on the released album.

The intro also contains a sample from 'Jagger The Dagger' by Eugene McDaniels that was also used by Gravediggerz on 'Nowhere to hide Nowhere to run'

  • The 2008 Gatorade G2 advertising campaign solely features the song's main sample
  • Jay-Z uses the famous hook for his freestyle song "22 Twos" on his acclaimed debut album, Reasonable Doubt.
  • This song was sung at the end of the Generation Kill episode "Stay Frosty".
  • The song has also been featured in a 2007 Levi's 501 commercial.
