The X Factor (British TV series) series 5
Template:The X Factor UK The fifth UK series of The X Factor is currently being broadcast on ITV. It premiered on 16 August and will continue through to 13 December 2008. Auditions in front of producers were held in April/May, with callbacks in front of the judges in June. The number of applicants for series 5 reached an all-time high with a reported 182,000[1] people auditioning.
Judges and Presenters
The judges for series 5 are Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole. On 6 June 2008 (six days before filming was due to begin at the London auditions) ITV announced that long-standing judge Sharon Osbourne had left the show.[2][3] Media speculation over the reasons for Osbourne's departure alluded to rising tensions between her and fellow judge Dannii Minogue, as well as disputes over pay.[3] When interviewed by Chris Moyles on BBC Radio 1, Osbourne said that it was "the best four years of [her] life" but felt that it was "time to move on."[4]
Much media coverage and speculation surrounded the question of who would replace Sharon. Former Spice Girl Melanie Brown revealed on 16 September 2008 in an interview for New! Magazine that she, among others, was approached by Cowell as a possible replacement for Sharon.[5] However, on 10 June 2008, four days after Osbourne's departure, ITV confirmed that Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Cole was the new judge for series 5 and the replacement for Sharon Osbourne. Minogue has praised the new judge, saying: "She’s very knowledgeable about music and I think she’s going to bring a new side to the show."[6] Cowell is reported by Minogue to feel that Cole's voiced opinions are something "which he loves".[6]
Presenter Dermot O'Leary returns to host the main ITV1 show, choosing to leave other projects, including his ongoing role as the host of Big Brother's Little Brother, in order to concentrate on The X Factor.[7] Xtra Factor presenter Fearne Cotton left after series 4, having presented for only one series, to be replaced by Holly Willoughby.[8] Brian Friedman returns as choreographer and performance coach (billed as "Creative Director"), along with Yvie Burnett as vocal coach.
Format
Auditions
A reported "record-breaking" 182,000 applied for series 5,[9][1] with filming for auditions in front of judges taking place in June/July 2008. Auditions were held in the cities of London, Birmingham, Manchester, Cardiff, and Glasgow.[10]
Dannii Minogue was missing from some of the auditions due to visits to her native Australia in order to film auditions for Australia's Got Talent.
Bootcamp
As in series 4, all four judges worked together at the bootcamp stage of the competition. This took place at the O2 arena in Greenwich, London on 4 August 2008, and was televised in two episodes on September 27 and September 28, 2008.[11][12] Contestants are said to have stayed in a nearby hotel in Blackheath.[12]
During the bootcamp stage, around 150 acts were whittled down to just 24 which advanced to the next round, 6 in each category.
After completion of bootcamp, the judges were told the category that they are to mentor. The category mentors are as follows: [13]

Visits To Judges' Houses
The "Visits To Judges' Houses" round was filmed in late August/early September and was broadcast over two shows on the 4th and 5th of October. As in previous years, the judges welcomed the six acts from their selected category to their "homes".[14] Each act had only one chance to impress their mentor who, along with a guest judge from the music industry, had the task of selecting which three acts were to go though to the live shows and which three would be eliminated.

Live shows
The live shows began on 11 October 2008, and will continue through to the finale. Leon Jackson performed on the first live show, promoting his second single "Don't Call This Love". Girls Aloud performed their new single, "The Promise", on the second show on October 18th. This will be the first single from their fifth album Out Of Control, as announced by Cole at the X Factor launch in August. Will Young performed his new song "Grace" on 1 November. Mariah Carey appeared on Saturday 8 November and performed her new single "I Stay in Love", plus a special version of "Hero" with 11 of the finalists (Diana Vickers was ill with laryngitis so could not perform). Leona Lewis appeared the week after and performed her new single "Run" from the deluxe edition of her album "Spirit"
It has been reported that there will be a Bond-themed live show in which the finalists will sing Bond theme songs. It has been confirmed that Alicia Keys and White Stripes frontman Jack White will perform on the show singing their duet "Another Way to Die", which is the theme for the 007 film Quantum of Solace.[15] Simon Cowell has stated that Britney Spears will be performing her new single "Womanizer" at one of the live shows.[16]
Take That and Beyonce Knowles have been announced as guests on the final show where both will do duets with the finalists and Knowles will perform her new single "If I Were a Boy".
Last year's runner-up, Rhydian Roberts has also been stated to appear to perform a track from his debut album.[17]
An added twist for this series, confirmed on the first live show, is that acts in the bottom-two showdown will sing a new song of their own choosing, rather than repeating the song they performed in the first part of the show (as was the case in previous series). As the series continues, some bloggers have noticed a pattern emerging, that the acts performing early on are much more likely to feature in the 'sing-off' to decide who will be eliminated.[18]
Heroes: Help for Heroes performance
The twelve finalists together recorded a cover version of Mariah Carey's 1993 hit "Hero" in support of the Help for Heroes charity.[19] The single was available for download from 25 October 2008, after the finalists performed the song live on that night's show. It was released in stores on 27 October, and Simon Cowell predicted it "will go straight to the top of the charts".[20] In the first week of its release it went straight to number 1 and sold 313,244 copies, more than the rest of the top ten combined.[21]

After the show, viewers complained that they had dialled this incorrect number and could not get through to vote for Ruth, but ITV insisted the issue should not have made any difference to the overall result.[22]

- Diana Vickers did not perform as she was suffering from laryngitis. The show's producers allowed her to go through to week six. It is the first time this has happened in the show's history. The producers of the show gave the following statement; "Diana Vickers did not perform on tonight's The X Factor on doctor's orders. Because of these exceptional circumstances producers have let her miss this week's show and she will return to the competition next week. All other artists supported this decision."[27] Vickers had been due to perform "Always Be My Baby".[28]

The first show of the series had the highest peak figure for any first show in the UK X Factor franchise.[52] The second show received similarly high ratings.[53][54] Viewer numbers fell for the third show, but warm weather was blamed for the drop and the programme was still the most-watched show of the day.[55] Ratings returned to their previous levels for the fourth episode.[56] Episode 5 was another ratings smash, eclipsing the preview of Strictly Come Dancing, as did the final auditions episode.[57]
The Bootcamp episodes performed well in the ratings; although the Saturday episode was beaten for the first time by Strictly,[58] the Sunday episode restored the balance.[59]
The Saturday "Judges' Homes" episode had the highest peak since the opening show, and the Sunday episode had a lower rating but still exceeded that of Strictly.[60]
The X Factor's first live show of the year pulled in a strong audience, considerably from the equivalent episode in 2007,[clarification needed] which had 6.17m (30.5%) in an earlier, 5.30pm timeslot.[61]
The first Xtra Factor episode drew in an average of 1.2 million viewers, peaking at 1.5 million,[62] making it that week's highest-rated ITV2 programme. The show's second episode pulled in 1.1 million viewers,[63] while the third attracted 1.3 million.[64] Episode four was viewed by 1.2 million.[65] Episodes 5 and 6 continued to attract more than 1 million viewers for each show. The "Judges' Homes" episodes of Xtra Factor pulled in a strong 1.2 million viewers average for both shows, gaining the highest viewing figures for multi-channels. The first night of live shows pulled in just short of 1 million viewers and won the battle for multi-channel viewings once again.[66]
