Clif Bar (stylized as CLIF) is a company that produces energy bars and other food targeted at people with active lifestyles. Their flagship product, the Clif Bar, was created in 1992 by owner Gary Erickson. The company is located in Berkeley, California.

History

Gary Erickson is the founder and CEO of Clif Bar. He graduated from the Orfalea College of Business with a degree in business administration in 1980. In 1986, Erickson co-founded Kali’s Bakery in Emeryville, California which sold calzones and gourmet cookies. While on a 175 mile bike ride he was eating energy bars and decided he could no longer take another bite due to the taste. He developed Clif Bar as an alternative to the many poor tasting energy bars on the market. In 1992, Kali’s introduced the first Clif Bars in the bakery. In 1997, Kali's Bakery changed its name to Clif Bar Inc., naming it after Gary's father, Clifford, with whom he often took hikes. In March 1999, Clif Bar introduced Luna Bars specifically marketed towards women. Luna bars outpaced the sales of Clif Bars and quickly became the company's top product. Later in 1999, Inc. Magazine selected the company as one of the twenty best small businesses web sites in the country. In 2000, Inc. Magazine named Clif Bar Inc. one of the country's fastest-growing private companies for the fourth straight year in a row. In April 2000, Gary turned down a $120 million offer to buy his company. In 2002, Clif Bar introduced MOJO which combines salty and nutty flavors. Gary Erickson and his wife Kit Crawford currently run the company as co-owners.

Environmental Sustainability

Clif bar is committed to environmentally sustainable practices. It uses packages with non-toxic inks and recycled paper board, and it has also eliminated shrink wrap from their products. It also promotes alternative fuel sources by having their company vehicles run on bio-diesel fuel and with a Cool Home Cool Commute program, which is the nation’s first employee commute incentive program to provide cash rewards for employees who purchase a clean burning bio-diesel or a high mileage hybrid. Employees who carpool, ride their bikes, or walk to work also receive benefits such as commuter checks and gift certificates to local businesses. Clif Bar diverts more than 70% of its waste from landfills. Employees are encouraged to recycle their old cell phone batteries at work. At Clif Bar’s offices the paper used is unbleached and 100 percent post-consumer recycled. Clif Bar purchases renewable wind energy credits to offset the carbon dioxide generated by their manufacturing, distribution, offices and business travel practices. Clif Bar provides financial and volunteer support to several environmental organizations including the Children’s Environmental Health Coalition and Co-op America.

Products and practices

The main line of Clif Bars is targeted at men, with a second line, Luna Bars, serving a female audience. Clif Bars themselves have a low-key packaging color, stressing earth tones and is made of foil rather than plastic. Three bars manufactured by Clif (CLIF, LUNA and MOJO) use 70% organic ingredients. Clif Bars are also vegan. Each flavor has a particular accent color - carrot cake, for instance, is orange, while oatmeal raisin walnut is green, and chocolate brownie is brown.

There are 15 kinds of Clif Bars.
