East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania is a public university located in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. It is one of the 14 state universities that compose the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). It is commonly referred to as ESU by its students and members of the community. The university began its existence in 1893 as a preparatory school for teachers called the East Stroudsburg Normal School. In 1960, additional curricula were added and the school, then called East Stroudsburg State Teachers College, became East Stroudsburg State College. It assumed its current name in 1983.

Location

East Stroudsburg University is situated in the borough of East Stroudsburg, located in the Pocono Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania. As of the academic year 2008-2009 the University's mascot was changed to Burgy the warrior bear. The university is 45 minutes southeast of the Scranton / Wilkes-Barre area and 40 minutes north of Allentown. The New Jersey border is only 2 miles (3 km) away and the campus is approx. 70 miles (110 km) from New York City and 90 miles (140 km) from Philadelphia. The neighboring town of Stroudsburg is the seat and cultural center of Monroe County. In Stroudsburg, students can enjoy leisurely trips such as shopping at the expansive one-story mall or attending one of the various night clubs on the Main Street. ESU is accessible from Interstate 80, US Route 209, and PA Route 33. Pocono Medical Center, the areas primary medical facility, Pocono Medical Center, is also located on the edge of the campus.

Campus

The 62 campus buildings are located on 213 acres (0.9 km2) in the East Stroudsburg community. In addition to the academic facilities, nine residence halls, housing 2,200 students, and a 1,000-seat dining hall are located on campus. The Quad is a popular area on the campus where students convene to hang out, sun-bathe and play sports during the summer, fall and spring months. In addition, The Student Activity Association, Inc., owns Stony Acres, a 119-acre (0.5 km2) off-campus student recreation area near Marshalls Creek, that includes a lodge, several cabins, a campsite, recreation areas and a lake. The campus is patrolled by the East Stroudsburg University Police Department.

Buildings

Many times overlooked, the Fine and Performing arts center at the very top of campus is the main hub of the music, theater, and communication departments. The building houses several main stages including the recital hall, a black box experimental theater, and a coliseum style performance theater. The building also contains classrooms, art studios, and offices for the departments.

In 2003, ESU opened its new recreation center, the "Rec Center". This recreational facility contains an elevated indoor track, several basketball courts, racquetball rooms, various free weight and weight machines as well as cardio machines. In addition to individual programs, there are also group fitness programs ranging from the normal (step aerobics and yoga) to the more exotic (thumb wrestling, blackjack, and square dancing) [1].

In September 2006, ESU began construction on the new Science and Technology Center. The Science and Technology Center is the first new major academic building since 1979. The $40,000,000 project is going to consist of state-of-the-art equipment and teaching facilities that is expected to stimulate economic growth and development in the area. The building is expected to house chemistry, math, computer science, and other various science departments. With 120,000 square feet (11,000 m2), the building includes research and classroom space, planetarium, heated celestial observation room, as well as offices for the relocated departments. The building will officially open on September 26th, 2008. [2].

Student life

Tuition

The in-state full-time tuition for ESU is currently $7,089. Out-of-state full-time tuition is currently $13,396.

Campus media

East Stroudsburg University publishes The Stroud Courier every Thursday. The newspaper covers on-campus events and breaking news stories as well as local, state and national news and opinions. The University is also home to the radio station 90.3 WESS. McGarry Communications Center contains ESU's television and news studio. A bi-weekly student run television program named ESU in Focus is also available to on campus cable services on channel 15.

Residence halls

There are eight residence halls at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania: Hawthorn Hall, Hemlock Hall, Laurel Hall, Lenape Hall, Linden Hall, Minsi Hall, Shawnee Hall, and University Apartments. All residence halls are coed by floor, except for Lenape and parts of Hemlock, which are coed by room. All but Shawnee are double rooms with two students living in one room. Shawnee Hall houses all permanent triple rooms. All rooms on campus are furnished with one desk and chair, dresser, closet/wardrobe, and one standard twin bed per student. Refrigerators (4.0 cubic foot max) and microwaves (800 watt max) are allowed in the residence halls. Each floor of every residence hall has an RA or Resident Advisor who is there to assist students with daily campus problems as well as to enforce rules.

East Stroudsburg University is well-known for temporarily tripling the freshman double rooms, especially in Minsi Hall and Lenape Hall. Shawnee may also be tripled, however, the rooms are suitable for three people. On average, the temporary will have the option to move out by the end of the first semester.

There is also the University Ridge Apartments located technically off-campus. Opened 18 November 2005 and located on 400 East Browns Street, the complex houses 514 students, and was a partnership project by ESU and Capstone Development Corp. The 135 apartment rooms, each divided into 10 buildings, has four single-living bedrooms, a shared living room, two shared bathrooms, a kitchenette, and a separate washroom. The units feature central air and utility, both included in the rent. The community center provides a TV lounge, cyber lounge, meeting/study room, fitness center, game room, vending area, mailboxes and management and rental offices as well as almost 500 parking spaces. Shuttle service is offered Monday - Friday to and from the nearby ESU campus and runs roughly every 20 minutes.

The Pocono Pony offers services to Stroudsburg and surrounding areas. [3]

The University Ridge is one of the projects planned to help ease the increasing amount of incoming freshmen, as well as remaining on-campus students.[4]

Vocal Performing Arts

The ESU vocal performing arts department is a very active group regularly putting on performances for school and community. There are four groups available to choose from that are readily willing to accept new members. The concert choir consists of 60-80 people that range from students to community members. Some of the recent performances in the '07-'08 school year consist of a Christmas medley at the annual winter concert and a world premiere of David Lantz's new song "When You Are Dead and Gone" and a stunning performance of the Bach Magnificat with full orchestra at the spring concert. The group is currently led by Dr. James Maroney. Also, under the leadership of Dr. Maroney are the two elite groups selected from ESU students. The A Cappella Ensemble and the Pop/Jazz Singers are two groups the perform on numerous occasions. The two groups embarked on a nine day performance tour to China in May, 2008 to Shenyung Normal University. Upcoming tours include Washington D.C. ('09), Toronto ('10), and England/Scotland ('11). Last but not least is the musical review. This is a student run professional production that reviews past musicals and puts them into an upbeat, show-stopping, amazing performance. The 2009 performance features songs from hit Broadway shows and popular movies including Wicked, Hairspray, Footloose, Aida, Fame, and many more!

Theater

ESU has many opportunities for students to get involved in theater. Either with the ESU theater department or Stage II there are several performances that happen every year including the One Acts, which are run by the students in Stage II and the semi-yearly straight play.

East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania's colors are Red and Black, and the team nickname is the Warriors. All teams compete in NCAA Division II, aside from wrestling and volleyball, which compete in NCAA Division I. There are currently 10 male varsity sports available as well as 11 female varsity sports to choose from.
