Korina Baluyut Sanchez is a Filipina broadcast journalist. She is one of the frontline personalities for ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation, her home network for more than two decades.

Profile

Korina Sanchez was born on October 5, 1964 in Hong Kong, where her parents met. Her mother, Celia Baluyut (1942-2004), was an interior designer and her father, Ramon P. Sanchez (1919-2004), was the General Manager of the, then Hongkong landmark, Ambassador Hotel. She is the second sibling and only girl of five children (EG, Milano, Mickey and Letty Baluyut-Sanchez). Her family came back to the Philippines and set up a carpet company, Woolcraft, Inc. that she says, "rose to one of the biggest in the Philippines."

She attended the private all-girls' school St. Theresa's College, then run by Belgian nuns, for her elementary and secondary education, and then Maryknoll College Foundation (now Miriam College), where she earned a bachelor's degree in Communication Arts. Her first love is writing but was also active in extra-curriculars like singing, theater, public speaking, and varsity volleyball in high school where she participated and won several competitions in activities related to her interests. In College Korina excelled in courses related to creative writing, thesis writing and speech. She completed a third-level French language course at the Makati-based Alliance Francaise de Manille.

Sanchez dreamt to be in the performing arts, just like her mother who was a singer and who dabbled in radio and television in the 40's and 50's. But she believed her "calling had always been in the field of information and communication". Quoting a magazine article Sanchez said, "I figured I liked journalism and wanted to be on TV, and newscasting seemed a pretty good idea at the time. It was the best decision I've ever made so far". She remembers telling her classmates in College, "I'm going to be a newscaster", after which she recounts her classmates laughed because they knew her to be a painfully shy girl. Sanchez quit college for a while and studied a short course on Newscasting and Radio Announcing in Program Philippines, Inc. Soon after she applied with the then government station, MBS Channel 4 where she worked as an editorial assistant and hourly newsbreak announcer.

Sanchez's high-profile career began from the time she started as a cub reporter in the early 80's. Her status in Philippine broadcast journalism has peaked since after year 2000. Sanchez has had numerous platforms in radio and television as a newsreader, field correspondent, magazine show host, executive producer, writer, commentator and panel moderator. She has received some of the most prestigious and credible awards and recognition-giving bodies for Philippine journalism. Recently, Sanchez was awarded the World Silver Medal for Investigative Reporting by the New York Festivals for 2008 for her series of reports on Substandard Food Supplements --- a report which rekindled consumer advocacy in the Philippines and which earned her the Ka Doroy Broadcaster of the Year Award given by the national broadcasters' organization Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas and the Broadcaster of the Year for Television Award given by the Manila Rotary Club Journalism Awards. Sanchez also landed Finalist for Best News Correspondent and her primetime weekly magazine program Rated K landed Finalist for Best News Magazine show at the most recent New York Festivals World Awards.

While Sanchez earned the position of No. 1 Most Trusted/Credible News Anchor in Philippine Television in a study in 2007, and even as her weekly primetime magazine program Rated K is one of the highest rating television programs nationwide --- it is Sanchez's daily stint as talk-radio commentator that is the most potent of her platforms. A co-anchor in the long-running socio-political commentary program, "Tambalang Failon at Sanchez" which she hosts with former congressman Ted Failon Mondays through Fridays on morning drive-time, Sanchez is much known for her no-holds-barred comments and opinions on current events and running news stories.

Through more than 20 years in the business Sanchez evolved into deeper concentration on investigative pursuits, charity and advocacy. Some of Sanchez's well-known advocacies are Patients' Rights and Responsibilities and public awareness against medical negligence (she is credited for "singlehandedly resurrecting a long-dead-and-buried issue in the halls of Congress, that is, the Medical Malpractice Bill after 15 years of dormancy); population control, health, breast cancer-awareness, pollution control, and Coral and Marine Life preservation (she is a deep-sea diver).

Today Korina Sanchez is the Chief Correspondent for the Philippines' largest network ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation, a news anchor for the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences nominated late night daily newscast Bandila (more than a year on-air), host for the twice a week interview program Korina Today on cable channel ANC (running 2 years on-air), Overall In Charge of Production for the weekly primetime Sunday magazine program Rated K (running 5 years on-air), and Co-anchor in the daily talk radio morning program Tambalang Failon at Sanchez(running 18 years on-air). Sanchez also writes daily columns for Pilipino Star Ngayon, Bulgar and Cebu Freeman while maintaining a Sunday column in The Philippine Star.

Career

Sanchez rose from the ranks. From being a station weathergirl at the then Marcos government-run Maharlika Broadcasting Station(now NBN-4) under the supervision of former Information Minister Greg Cendaña,[1] she advanced to be the hourly newsbreak announcer, beat reporter and pinch-hit anchor to her seniors. In 1986, after the Revolution and freedom of speech as against censorship was restored under President Corazon Aquino, Sanchez joined the reopened ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation as a senior reporter. President Ferdinand Marcos had closed down the Lopez-owned station but was given back to the Lopezes in 1986. Sanchez one of a handful of newsmen who pioneered the reinvented ABS-CBN Television News. She became executive producer and host to programs such as 'Magandang Umaga Po' with then co-anchor Noli de Castro, 'Bayan Ko Sagot Ko', 'Hoy Gising!', 'Options', 'Balitang K', 'Isyu 101' and 'Pulso: Aksyon Balita'.

When de Castro ran for public office in 2001, Sanchez was chosen by ABS-CBN's news department to be the station's first solo woman anchor of the flagship news program 'TV Patrol'. By then Sanchez's daily radio program with co-anchor Ted Failon (Tambalang Failon at Sanchez) was established as a flagship radio program for sister station DZMM on AM radio.

In 2003, Sanchez was asked to pinch-hit as co-host to actress Kris Aquino. The tandem clicked and what was supposed to be a two-week stint became a hit sixteen-month talk show. 'Morning Girls with Kris and Korina' ended in May 2004 after Sanchez was offered a slot in a Sunday newsmagazine show, 'Rated K: Handa Na Ba Kayo?', which still runs to date as one of the station's consistent raters.

Sanchez also has an equally high-profile career in radio through DZMM, ABS-CBN's Metro Manila radio station. She does socio-political commentary with longtime friend and colleague Ted Failon, who was also her co-anchor in Hoy Gising!. Their program was first entitled Aksyon Ngayon, and then renamed Tambalang Failon at Sanchez. When Failon was elected Congressman of the first district of Leyte province, Sanchez hosted the program on her own and it was renamed Korina sa Umaga. Three years later, the show reverted to Tambalang Failon at Sanchez after Failon opted not to run for another term.

2004 was an eventful year for Sanchez after her romantic relationship with then-Senatorial-candidate Mar Roxas was revealed to the public. Rumors spread, saying he paid her millions of pesos to help him gain votes. She also lost her parents barely three months apart: her mother to cancer and her father to a series of strokes. She was also removed from TV Patrol after 24 Oras of rival GMA 7 triumphed in the ratings with veteran Mel Tiangco. However, she was appointed by the network and remained as the news organization's Chief Correspondent for Philippine & Global Operations.[2]

After almost two years of Sanchez' hiatus in newscasting, she was re-installed as news anchor at Bandila, the news program of ABS-CBN which replaced Insider. It had its pilot last 3 July 2006 with a banner story about Danny Lim's withdrawal of support from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

On 10 July 2006, ABS-CBN News Channel celebrated its 10th Year in the broadcast industry. It introduced new programs that will make the channel a better provider of news. Included in the new programs is a noontime discussion (with a late evening rerun) show Korina Today, hosted by no less than Miss Sanchez herself.

Sanchez is also consistently included as one of the preferred senatoriables. Her name is always included in the top 12 preferred personalities for the Senatorial Race based on the surveys of Pulse Asia and Social Weather Stations, including the 2004 [3] and recently released survey for 2007 elections.[4] However, Sanchez has always declined invitations to join the political arena, thinking that it is better to watch mud wrestling than being part of it.[5]

Korina Sanchez filed an indefinite leave from ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs. On May 8, 2009, Sanchez bid goodbye to her DZMM radio morning program and evening newscast Bandila in anticipation of her wedding with Mar Roxas and the latter's presidential bid for the 2010 Philippine elections.[6][7] Her farewell came after the broadcast journalist and Senator Mar Roxas confirmed their engagement on ABS-CBN's noontime show Wowowee. However, her magazine program Rated K will remain part of the network's Sunday programming.[8]

Awards

Sanchez has received numerous awards from various award-giving bodies for television, including the Gawad CCP para sa Telebisyon, Community Outstanding Young Achievers Awards, Catholic Mass Media Awards, KBP Golden Dove Awards, PMPC Star Awards for Best Female Newscaster which she shared with almost a decade winner and industry pillar Mel Tiangco. Her recent awards include Best Newscaster for TV Patrol, Best Talk Show Host for Morning Girls with Kris and Korina, Best Radio Program for Korina sa Umaga, Pipol of the Year 2004, best female newscaster award from UST TV Awards 2005, and Anak TV Seal 2006 favorite Female Personalities.[9] For 2007, Sanchez was awarded as Best Magazine Show host by two award-giving bodies, the Philippine Movie Press Club and the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters ng Pilipinas.[10][11] She was also awarded as one People Asia's Women of Style and Substance.[12] She also ranked number one across all ten female TV personalities in Anak TV Seal's Most Admired Female Personalities for 2007 and 2008.[13][14]

In 2008, Korina Sanchez was given with the highest honor "Ka Doroy Broadcaster of the Year" by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas[15]. During the 2009 New York Festivals, Korina Sanchez was honored with a Silver World Medal for Investigative Report for her expose on substandard food supplements. The female broadcaster revealed that the actual Gluthatione content of whitening products in the Philippine market was way below their supposed content. As a result of this documentary, Lucida DS Glutathione owners threatened to sue Korina Sanchez for libel. The New York Festivals also gave Sanchez a finalist certificate for the category Best News Reporter, while her public affairs program Rated K was also awarded with a finalist certificate.[16]

Relationships

Sanchez is mostly known to rather keep things to herself, but rather unsuccessfully. She was known to have a relationship more than a decade ago with Kris Aquino's brother, Noynoy and she is currently in a relationship with Philippine Senator Mar Roxas. It has been previously known that Sanchez and Roxas will be married within 2008, and that Roxas will be running for presidency in the 2010 elections, thus, making Sanchez a potential first lady of the Republic of the Philippines. Previously, Sanchez said that she is prioritizing her journalism career as of the moment, and that she is not yet planning to marry Mar Roxas.[17]

In the April 25, 2009 episode of ABS-CBN noontime show Wowowee where Sanchez appeared as a guest co-host alongside Willie Revillame, Sanchez and Roxas revealed that they are already engaged.[18][19] Sanchez and Roxas remain mum about the details of their wedding. However, the Philippine Star reported that Sanchez is said to be in talks with designer Pepito Albert for her wedding gown and will take a leave from her work at ABS-CBN starting May of 2009.[20]

Controversy

Sanchez was suspended by ABS-CBN for one week effective 21 December 2006, covering all her TV and radio programs. Sanchez was reprimanded by the network for “conflict of interest, several articles that called attention to her activities outside of the company, and an editorial lapse,” when she became a proponent of a firm that produces concerts for MYMP.[21]

Sanchez' name was also dragged during the height of a controversy involving FrancSwiss, a pyramiding scheme. On 10 July 2007 denies having invested in FrancSwiss. “I categorically deny making any investment in FrancSwiss. It was irresponsible for the National Bureau of Investigation to make the reckless allegation and destroy my reputation as a broadcast journalist, which I carefully built and protected through the years,” Sanchez, who is abroad issued the statement.[22] 25 people already filed complaints against Francswiss and each poured in a minimum of $1,000. NBI Senior Agent Manny Fayre is set to invite some personalities to shed light on the incident, including popular actress Claudine Barreto and her actor-husband Raymart Santiago, broadcast journalist Korina Sanchez and cager Bonnel Balingit.[23]
