Hi vpuliva, keep up the good work.

Notice to all members of WikiProject Maryland

There are a few things going on right now in WikiProject Maryland that I thought all members should know about, especially the first one.

  • Not too long ago, Marylandstater raised the question of exactly how many members of the project are still active. For this reason, I'm asking everyone who is still active, and wants to remain in the project, to put an asterisk (*) after their username on the project's participants list. You have until the end of November 17, 2007 to do so, sometime after that, all the names that do not have an asterisk will be removed. This is just to clean up the ever expanding list. If you've been gone and come back to find that you've been removed from the list, don't take it personally, just re-add yourself! I won't feel bad at all if no one gets removed, in fact, it would be nice if all 30 members still consider themselves active. Also, this won't affect the two subprojects, but speaking of the subprojects...
  • As of sometime next week WikiProject Baltimore City College will be no more. Myself, Golem88991, and John Carter have decided to make it into a task force of WikiProject Maryland. If you have any objections, concerns, or comments, please post them in the talk page topic concerning this.

Now for the exiting news:

  • I'm pleased to announce the creation of the Baltimore Task Force! Those interested in contributing to Wikipedia's numerous articles related to Maryland's largest city, now have a place to collaborate.
  • I'd also like to take this time to propose a project newsletter. Any comments should be directed at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Maryland#Newsletter.

A couple last things:

  • The portal is in desperate need of maintenance, anyone who's interested, go check it out.
  • It's probably a good idea to add the project page (and thus the project talk page) to your watchlist. That way, you can easily see when new comments are posted.

I hope you read through all that ;). Thanks to all members for your contributions to the project's articles so far, let's keep up the good work!
Sincerely, -Jeff (talk) 05:57, 3 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Use of New Template

I have created a template {{WikiProject Maryland/flag/animated}} using a commons image that could be used on the front page of the Maryland project. As you can see, I have configured it to fly behind the wiki-puzzle-world logo in the upper left portion of the screen. I will leave it there for a couple of days and invite your comments as to whether we should use it on our front page, or not.--«Marylandstater» «reply» 16:32, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for edits on Chambersburg, Pennsylvania

I saw your edits to Chambersburg and they look pretty good. It was "my first project" on Wikipedia, so it has a special place on my watchlist. I'd guess I've done about 70% of the work on the article, including most of the mistakes I'm sure. One of the biggest problems is the form of the references, missing references, etc. Drudge work that I haven't been able to force myself to do.

You're obviously a Marylander - maybe from near Hagerstown? One thing you may be able to track down (I haven't been able to) is the story I heard from the tour guide at the old jail - that the last time the Franklin County gallows were used was in Hagerstown - that they borrowed and then returned the gallows. I don't even know where to start looking for a reference, but if you stumble on one, I know the sentence that will go with it! Also if you know of anything that happened there in the 20th or 21st centuries - it should probably go in!

A couple of us got the article to Good Article status a while ago, and I think it probably still deserves it. I just got my first FA Tulip mania - working with a good group. If I could find somebody interested in helping with Chambersburg, I would like to do the same.

Just let me know if this interests you (or ignore otherwise)

Tapa, Estonia

Tere, Vpuliva. I am in Tapa, Estonia. Maybe six or ten months ago I tried, on behalf of the Tapa municipal government, to re-establish a connection and a new working relationship between Tapa and Cumberland, Maryland. Do you know if indeed one exists today in practice? Or is it just still on paper? Is there a person in Cumberland today whom I can contact? I know there has been cooperation and interaction in the past, say five or ten years ago, between the two governments. Thank you. Aitäh. RobKevHogRobKevHog (talk) 15:13, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Judaism links

Hi, I saw you removed the links to the Jewish facilities from the pages about regions in Maryland and West Virginia. I don't agree with these edits because I feel it is important to provide information about interesting or noteworthy attractions in the pages about localities. I consider the facilities in question to fall under that category. To the best of my knowledge, there are only 4 such facilities in the U.S.A. (this one, as well as others in Albany, NY, Daly City, CA and Arkansas). Karaite Jewish activity is notable enough to warrant mention in the Wikipedia page about Daly City, California, a city with a population over 100,000. Perhaps the links could be put in another existing section of the page, or we could create new sections about links to area attractions? What are your thoughts? --AFriedman (talk) 17:44, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To me, it seemed out of place in the external links section. That section has links that deal with the whole community while the Judaism link seems to focus on a very small portion of the community. In a small town article like Hedgesville, it seems more like a significant part of the community. I actually think it is somewhat out of place in the Daly City, CA article, but I feel if there is a section talking about the various cultural/religious groups/facilities in the community and you make mention of the facilities in such a section, then they would probably fit better. If you can come up with a section covering other community cultures/religions as well, that would be great-I don't have that information. It might also be worthwhile to make mention of it and all of the other Jewish facilities in the Karaite Judaism article itself. Vpuliva (talk) 23:40, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

I like your idea of making the Jewish links part of a new section. (1) I've changed the Karaite Judaism article to better accommodate the links to U.S. communities, as you suggested. (2) I've added the links to the Karaite communities in Hedgesville, West Virginia, Albany, New York and Leslie, Arkansas as part of new sections called "religious life" and "cultural attractions." I don't know about other aspects of these areas, though, only about their Karaite Jewish communities. Do you know how we can find someone else to flesh out the sections in question? --AFriedman (talk) 04:18, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My thought is that we can put this task on the "to do" lists of the relevant WikiProjects. Would you be willing to help? --AFriedman (talk) 14:17, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Volunteer opportunity in Bethesda, Thursday, July 16

The Wikimedia Foundation will be conducting an all-day Academy at the National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday, July 16. The team that will be teaching at the Academy, a mix of paid staff and volunteers, is looking for four more volunteers to be teaching assistants, providing one-to-one assistance in workshops whenever a workshop participant has a problem following the instructional directions. (We currently have two editors signed up as teaching assistants, and are looking for a total of six.)

The NIH editing workshops are only for two hours, but volunteers are asked to meet the Wikimedia Foundation team at the hotel in Bethesda at about 7:15 a.m. (time to be finalized shortly) and to stay for the entire day, which ends at 4:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided. (The full schedule can be found here.)

The team is not necessarily looking for expert editors (though they are welcome), just people who can help novices who might get stuck when trying to do some basic things. If you've been an editor for at least 3 months, and have done at least 500 edits, you probably qualify.

If you're interested, please send John Broughton an email. If you might be interested, but would like further information, please post a note on his user talk page, so that he can respond there, and others can see what was asked.

List of best-selling music artists, Michael Jackson

A semi-protected edit request was performed, to amend the figures for MJ to 750m. This request was reverted. Therefore, I have started a fresh discussion thread, in Talk:List_of_best-selling_music_artists#Michael Jackson (again).

I see that you contributed to the previous discussions, which is why I am leaving you this note.

I remain neutral on the issue; I hope that we can form a consensus.

I am asking any and all interested parties to please make brief, policy-based arguments as to whether or not the edit should be made.

Thanks,  Chzz  ►  21:10, 11 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
