SC Tavriya Simferopol (Ukrainian: СК «Таврія» Сімферополь, Russian: СК «Таврия» Симферополь, Crimean Tatar: SK «Tavriya» Aqmescit) is a football club from Simferopol, Crimea, which plays in the Ukrainian Premier League. Tavria is Crimea's most successful football club and is the winner of the very first Ukrainian Premier League, making them one out of 3 teams that have ever held this title.

History

The club was founded in 1958 under the name 'Avanhard', Tavria played their first game in USSR Championship against Yaroslav based club Khimik. Overall Tavria played 132 clubs from 113 cities. They have played their last match in the competition against FC Uralmash Yekatirinburg.

Post-Soviet

After the fall of Soviet Union, Ukrainian Premier League was formed, and Tavria became one of its founders. And eventually became the very first Ukrainian champion, defeating in the final, which was held in Lviv, Ukraine's most successful club Dynamo Kyiv. Having become the domestic champions the club earned a right to participate in UEFA Champions League, however they were knocked out in the first round by Swiss club FC Sion.

Tavria is also one of the 5 clubs to have participated in every season of the Ukrainian premier league. Their best performance in the Ukrainian Cup came in 1994, when they have beaten in the final by Chornomorets Odessa, on two other occasions they have reached semi-finals.

On December 29, 2005 club owner Serhiy Kunitsyn fired the team's coach, Oleh Fedorchuk. On January 5, 2006 Tavriya signed Mykhailo Fomenko for a half year contract.

Connections to organized crime

According to local police, the football club is a front for an organized crime gang called the 'Bashmaki' (the 'Shoe gang'), believed to be involved in 50 murders as well as kidnapping. In 2007 the club's former president, Viktor Karasev, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for arson and use of illegal weapons. [1]
