Ryan Higa and Sean Fujiyoshi are Japanese-American comedians from Hilo, Hawaii. They are known for their YouTube comedy videos, which have been viewed over 230 million times.[1] Their YouTube channel nigahiga is currently the most subscribed of all time.[2]

Background

Ryan and Sean started as Youtube comedians while still attending Waiakea High School by posting videos from mid 2006 to early 2007 of themselves lip synching to songs.[3] After posting a variety of videos such as solo-rants by Ryan, the duo garnered much success with a series of "how-to" guides such as "How to be Ninja" and "How to be Gangster". More recently, their video content has shifted towards spoofs of real commercial products and movies. Some spoofed products include the "ShamWOOHOO!" (after the ShamWow!), "ChildrensBop", and "Hook on Fonik".[4] Their "Movies in Minutes" videos summarize and spoof movies such as Harry Potter, Twilight, Transformers, Titanic, Saw and others which include the up-coming movie New Moon. Occasional guest appearances are made by Tim Enos (who plays the role of Helga Fawntanilla), Ryan Villaruel, Kyle Chun and Tarynn Nago (Ryan's girlfriend), collectively known as the "Yabo Crew".[5]

Youtube Popularity/Controversy

Ryan and Sean's YouTube channel, nigahiga, was created on July 20, 2006. By July 2008 it had over 300,000 subscribers, making it one of the site's most subscribed channels.[6] By November 2008, their videos had been viewed over 150 million times.[7]

On May 10 2009, Nigahiga passed the one million subscriber mark and ranked as YouTube's second most subscribed channel, just short of Fred's 1.2 million subscribers. On August 20, 2009, Ryan and Sean overtook Fred to become the most subscribed YouTube channel of all time.[8]

On Christmas Eve of 2008, two of Ryan and Sean's videos were removed from YouTube due to copyright issues. The affected videos were two of their most viewed - "How to be Gangster" and "How to be Emo". On January 21, 2009, nigahiga was temporarily suspended and was told to remove more copyrighted videos. In response, several videos including "How to be Nerd" and "How to be UFC Fighter" were set to private. His lip syncs are no longer on his channel (with the exception of "You're Beautiful", which was audio swapped). Most of his rants are set to private and most of his non-lip syncs are set to private in order to prevent being suspended. Currently, most of the videos that include music are songs Ryan composed himself. "How to be Gangster" and "How to be Emo" had been put back up in late August 2009 according to his Twitter, only to be removed once again a few days later together with "How to be Ninja". Ryan and Sean once had over 70 videos, but due to copyright violations, their videos have been reduced down to about 40.

Ryan and Sean's Not So Excellent Adventure

In 2008, Los Angeles producer Derek Zemrak offered to help them create their first feature-length film. The resulting film, Ryan and Sean's Not So Excellent Adventure, directed by Richard Van Vleet, was shown in sold out theaters in Hawaii and California.[7]

Ryan and Sean's Not So Excellent Adventure is about a down on his luck movie producer, played by Michael Buckley, who is seeking out famous celebrities in order to make a hit movie in 30 days or risk being fired. He chooses Ryan Higa and Sean Fujiyoshi after discovering the popularity of their YouTube videos. He invites them to Hollywood to make a movie. They accept the offer, and run into some amusing situations on the way. The DVD was released on July 14, 2009 in the USA.

Ninja Melk

On August 24, 2009 "Ninja Melk" was uploaded to the nigahiga channel.[9] It's a 26 minute short film, by far the longest video made by Ryan Higa and Sean Fujiyoshi to date. It's self described as a "homemade epic action/adventure comedy short film about ninjas!". It made it to the YouTube movie spotlight.
