Ryū ga Gotoku 3 (龍が如く3) (Yakuza 3 in North America) is the fourth installment in the Yakuza video game series, developed and published by Sega for the PlayStation 3 video game console[2]. The Japanese version was released in Japan and South East Asia on February 26, 2009, a subtitled version was released in Korea on February 27, 2009[3]. According to a January 2009 interview with videogaming247's Mike Bowden, a western release is unlikely[4]. However, SEGA has released a statement saying that the company has not ruled out the possibility of the game seeing a release overseas.[5]

Unlike Ryū ga Gotoku Kenzan! (often confused with Yakuza 3), which was a spinoff, this latest installment will continue the adventures of Kiryu Kazuma from Yakuza and Yakuza 2. The game will take place both in Kamuro-cho (fictional version of Tokyo's Kabuki-cho) from the first two games and in Okinawa.

Overview

Ryu ga Gotoku 3 takes a departure from the first two games with its choice of setting: instead of focusing on the gritty cityscape of Tokyo, it switches gears and sends Kiryu to the tropical island of Okinawa, where he runs a center for orphaned children with his adoptive daughter Haruka who accompanied him in both Yakuza 1 & 2. The orphanage is on land that is owned by Shigeru Nakahara, the boss of a mob known as the Ryudo Ikka. Nakahara is under pressure from the country's government to sell the land. Kiryu once again finds himself in a series of tough situations.[6]

Extra Contents

Sega has unveiled the DLC schedule for the game[7]. Twenty-nine free DLC, being item packs, 2-player mode support for mini-games or sub-stories, are delivered for free through game updates during an eight-week DLC campaign starting on March 5, 2009 with 2-player mode support for two mini-games (Billiard and Darts) and Item Pack 01.[7][8].

Trial Version

A trial version was released on the Japanese PlayStation Store in February 19, 2009[9].

Reception

Japanese magazine Weekly Famitsu rated the game 38/40[10]. First day sales for Ryu ga Gotoku 3 exceeded 232,000 copies according to Enterbrain. Eurogamer rated the game 8/10.[11]
