Animal (Kesha album)

Animal is the debut album of American singer-songwriter Kesha, released January 5, 2010 on RCA Records in the United States.[11]
Conception
Kesha was featured on Flo Rida's single, "Right Round". Then it was announced that she had signed with RCA Records[12] through Dr. Luke and was working on her debut album.[13]
Music
She told DigitalSpy that when it came to her music she wanted to "give people something that brings them joy. There are artists who do more serious acoustic stuff, and I really admire them, but what I want to bring to the table is just fucking fun."[14]
She has expressed frustration at the double standard for the objectification of women in songs; in her song "Boots and Boys," she makes it a point to sing the same way men traditionally sang about women.[15]
Songs
"Tik Tok" was the first single from the album. "TiK ToK", had been released digitally in the US in early August,[16] and was sent to radio two months later in October.[17]
A number one placing in New Zealand for "TiK ToK" gave Kesha her first number one;[18] this was followed by number one positions in both Canada and Australia. It later reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100, the first number one of the decade,[19] and reached top five in several countries.[20] For its second week at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, "TiK ToK" set the female download record and became the second best-selling single in a week, after "Right Round", for shifting 610,000 copies.[21]
Critical reception
Critical reception to Animal was generally favorable. The Boston Globe's James Reed, however, wrote a scathing review of the album, stating that it was difficult to discern that Kesha had co-written every song on the album because she sounded "vapid and faceless, as if she doesn’t even believe what she’s singing." He went on to call the album "flat and vacuous" and denounced Animal as "a shallow hodgepodge of 2009’s tried-and-true formulas," and said "you can almost hear the clock counting down her fifteen minutes of fame." [3]
However, other reviewers were more positive. Village Voice reviewer Ryan Dombal wrote that Animal contained "frank and funny mass-appeal songs that are alternately risqué, vulnerable, and utterly shameless."[10]
Entertainment Weekly writer Mikael Wood gave the album a B+, stating that although Ke$ha was the most brazen in the dance-pop genre, she did right in employing Dr.Luke to frame her work.[4]
