Iron Sky (Finnish: Rautataivas) is an upcoming Finnish feature-length comedy science fiction film from the makers of the Star Wreck series, directed by Timo Vuorensola and produced by Samuli Torssonen as their next project after the success of Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning.[3][4][5] Aboard as screenwriter for Iron Sky is the award-winning Finnish author Johanna Sinisalo.[6][7] The film is being created by the Energia Productions, Blind Spot Pictures and Cinet production companies. It is estimated to be released in cinemas early 2011.[7]

Background

As a dark science fiction comedy that plays with Finland's history of being oppressed by Sweden and Russia, Iron Sky is a deliberate thematic throwback, a modern implementation of once-popular science fiction tropes that have fallen into disuse, such as Nazis in space.[5][6] On May 6, 2008, the film's official website released more detailed information on the storyline.[8][9]

Plot summary

As World War II comes to an end in 1945, Hans Kammler and other German scientists make a breakthrough in anti-gravity research. From a secret base in the Antarctic, Nazi spaceships are sent to the "dark side" of the Moon to establish the military base "Schwarze Sonne" (Black Sun).[3] Their plan is to build a powerful fleet and return to conquer Earth. The film is set in the year 2018 when their descendants finally return.[3][5]

Production

After the success of Star Wreck: In the Pirkinning, the same crew began formulating ideas about a new science-fiction motion picture. Production of Iron Sky began in early 2006, and the production team took their teaser trailer of the film to The Cannes Film Festival in May 2008 seeking co-financiers[10] and signed a co-production agreement with Oliver Damian’s 27 Films Prods for Iron Sky.[11][12] The teaser trailer was then released on May 6, 2008 with a completely re-vamped Iron Sky Website.[6][13]

On February 11, 2009 it was announced that the film will star German actress Julia Dietze.[14]

Filming is expected to begin in the spring of 2010, with completion due at the end of the same year.[2]

According to Samuli Torssonen, Iron Sky will be filmed in Red camera format.[15]

Community collaboration

Iron Sky is one of a new wave of productions, including A Swarm of Angels and RiP!: A Remix Manifesto, produced in collaboration with an on-line community of film enthusiasts, that are creating a new kind of Participatory cinema. At Wreck-a-Movie, a collaborative film-making web site, the producers have invited everyone interested in "chipping in" with their ideas and creativity to read the tasks given to the community and to take a shot (write an entry).[3][5][16] Collaborators can also attach media to their shots.[5][6]

Iron Sky: Operation Highjump

Iron Sky: Operation Highjump is a video game being developed by LudoCraft and set in the same universe as the upcoming film. The game will be ported to Linux by IGIOS.[17]
