Barbra Amesbury
Barbara Amesbury (born 1948 in Larder Lake, Ontario) is a Canadian philanthropist and former singer-songwriter, who had several Top 40 hits in Canada in the 1970s as Bill Amesbury before coming out as a transsexual and pursuing sex reassignment surgery.
Amesbury's biggest hit was "Virginia (Touch Me Like You Do)", which was also the first single ever released on the Casablanca Records label.
Following her surgery, Amesbury left the music business, becoming an arts patron and philanthropist.
In 1999, "Virginia" was given an award by SOCAN to mark 100,000 spins on Canadian radio stations. Amesbury's songs have also been covered by Natalie Cole ("Nothin' But a Fool") and Mitch Ryder ("A Thrill's A Thrill").
