Partial review, to the rebuilding section, more to follow. Prose is the main issue.
Within two years, pressure from supporters had led to the resignation of the board and relegation to the Third Division Pressure from the supporters led to relegation?
Not sure if champions should be capitalised.
For the rest of the nineties though, the club went through three different managers could do with rewording, makes it sound like the club were Brian Little's breakfast.
They reached the FA Cup Final in 2000 for the first time since 1957. Wrong way around, as the 2000 final happened only once. They reached the final for the first time since 1957 in 2000.
rapturous reception While often used in the media, "rapturous" is probably a poor term, as strictly speaking it refers to the descent of saints from heaven.
There are several instances of passive phrasing such as "was to be". The simple past tense of "was" reads better.
attendances rose from a low of just over 12,000 against Charlton in December to peak at more than 50,000 in their last home game of the season against Birmingham City. Slightly misleading, surely a derby would always attract a big crowd irrespective of form?
The club's first season of European football was short-lived though as they were beaten 5–1 by Antwerp. Was this in the first round?
The 1976–77 season also saw a League Cup win with Villa beating Everton 3–2 on aggregate. Comes across as an afterthought, tacked on the the end of the sentence. Surely a trophy win deserves more attention than a fourth place and an FA Cup quarter final? Also, wasn't the final a single tie (albeit replayed)? How can the win have been on aggregate?
There are a few run-on sentences e.g. Docherty helped rebuild confidence in the team and Villa went on to win five consecutive games to retain their place in the Second Division. Oldelpaso (talk) 20:49, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A couple more:
I don't think the Lerner image should be in the lead, he has only been associated with the club for a short period of time.
Several supporters groups had been urging Ellis to resign for over a year Campaigns opposing Ellis had been going on for a very long time. Perhaps some wording to indicate that this was an increase in their intensity would be in order.
Details of a loan signing and a change of kit manufacturer seem minor details, given some of the other things to have happened in the last 47 years which aren't included. Oldelpaso (talk) 21:04, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Removed Nike and loan bit, switched the European Image with the Lerner image. Woody (talk) 23:54, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done the Ellis bit thanks. Woody (talk) 23:58, 13 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Balaban
For some reason the signing of Bosko Balaban had been 'credited' to Graham Taylor in this article. If anyone can find a sensible place to talk about Balaban, please feel free; for now I have simply removed the reference. Smurfmeister (talk) 10:20, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, fair. This article makes it clear that Gregory signed him. Good spot. The Rambling Man (talk) 10:25, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Mistake?
The text says Villa were relegated for the third time in 1967 - yet the graph only shows one prior relegation, in the 1930s. Is one wrong? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.151.16.171 (talk) 14:30, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
We're not talking about the drop to div 3. The text says "The problems started when the club was relegated from the first tier of English football for the third time, under manager Dick Taylor in 1967... The club was then relegated to the Third Division."
If 1967 was the third time, and the fall to div 3 was later (which it was - 1970 I think), then either the graph is wrong for only showing one prior demotion, or the text is miselading.
