Lady Brabourne College(LBC) is a women's college located in Kolkata, India.The college admits both undergraduates and post-graduates,and awards degrees under the University of Calcutta.It is one of the oldest and most prestigious educational institution in kolkata.Students and alumni of the college are termed Brabournites.


HISTORY AND EVOLUTION


The college is named after Lady Brabourne, the wife of then governor of Bengal, Lord Michael Knatchbull, 5th Baron Brabourne, till February 1939. It is affiliated to the University of Calcutta. The foundation stone of the building in which the College is presently housed was laid by Sir J. Woodhead on 26 August 1939. In 2006, the college was accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council and was awarded with an 'A' grade certification.

It began with 35 Muslim women students and 9 faculty members with the objective of promoting higher education among Muslim women.

The college celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1989 and its Diamond Jubilee in 1999 and has now emerged as a multicultural venue for students from various backgrounds.

While the founding faculty mostly belonged to the Humanities stream,Science courses at the pass level were introduced in july 1958.Presently the college offers Honours courses in eighteen subjects,five of which are in the languages,four in the social sciences and nine in the sciences.

Presently the college has the faculty strength of ninety full time teachers and about thirty-one part time teachers and eleven guest teachers.Furthur the colege has also begun post graduate courses in 4 subjects.

CAMPUS


The College spread over 6.1 acres of prime land consists of two adjacent campuses,the first enclosing the main college building,the science buildings and the cottage amidst lush greenery gardens,open spaces and a playground.Over the years the infrastructure has developed and expanded to keep up with the demands of new requirements such as laboratories,computer facilities,a medical unit,canteens,a career councelling cell and a sky gazing unit.


SPORTS


The College hosts the annual sports before the Christmas holidays.Participation from students, teachers and staff make the winter afternoon really enjoyable.Students also participate in the inter- college sports meet organised by the Government colleges annually at the S.A.I Complex,Sat Lake.


NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME


Students may join a unit of the National Service Scheme(NSS)to take part in various activities generating social awareness about environmental issues,female trafficking,drug abuse etc.Camping programmes are also organized under teacher supervision by the NSS units.


STUDENT'S UNION


As per government instructions,the college has a Student's Union.In the absence of any political interference the elections take place in a healthy and democratic manner under the supervision of a committee of teachers led by the Chief Election Officer,appointed by the principal.The members of the Student's Union are involved with various activities throughout the year including the organisation of the Orientation Programme for the first year students,Fresher's welcome,Independence Day celebration,Reunion,Kaleidoscope,Annual Sports,Farewell of the third year students,etc.as well as maintaining the cleanliness and general environment of the College Campus throughout the year.


CAREER COUNSELLING AND JOB PLACEMENTS


In keeping with recent trends,the college has a career counselling committee since 2002,which organizes various programmes for career development of aspiring students.


KALEIDOSCOPE


The annual college fest 'KALEIDOSCOPE' is an exciting programme organized by the students and for the students.The event proves to be a big attraction for students not only of Lady Brabourne College but also of other premier colleges of Kolkata.


COLLEGE MAGAZINE


The College magazine,published annualy is multi-lingual in nature.Both teachers and students contribute articles on a wide range of interesting topics.


MEDICAL UNIT


A Medical Unit is eqipped to provide first aid and preliminary treatment,if required especially during examinations.A General Physician and a Psychiatrist attend the College once a month to provide counselling and general advice to students and teachers regarding various health and related problems.


HOSTEL FACILITY


The College with accomodation for about 207 students is located in the adjacent premises,the second campus of the College.Admission to the College hostel is mainly on the basis of performance in the last examination and the distance of the applicant's hometown.It is ensured that each department has a fair quota of seats in the hostel.


OTHER COURSES OFFERED


1.The College has been running a Computer Certificate Course in collaboration with WEBEL Informatics for the benefit of the students since 1996.Since 2005,separate syllabi for the humanities,the bio-science and the pure science disciplines have been framed,each to be taught over a period of three years(Self-Financing Course).


2.A Spanish Language Training Programme began in November 2007 in collaboration with WTCC School of Trade and Communication,Kolkata.The specially designed course,consists of two levels each to be taught over a period of a year,covering 50 hours of teaching time,will also offer a choice of specialization either in business communication or in literature in the second year.At the conclusion of the course each successful student will be awarded a certificate of proficiency in the language,issued jointly by the College and the WSTC.
