Rashtreeya Vidyalya College of Engineering (RVCE) is one of oldest premier engineering colleges in India. It is a self financing engineering college located in the IT Capital of India, Bangalore.

The institution is headed by Dr. S. C. Sharma, Professor in Mechanical Engineering. The college is best known for its placement facilities, through which it achieves the highest percentages of students landing in the best technology jobs in India. The students of RVCE have secured jobs in the best information technology companies like Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, Oracle India, Lucent Technologies, Novell, National Instruments, Huawei Technologies, Talisma Corporation, IBM, TCS, Intel, Yahoo!, Infosys Technologies, Siemens AG, Wipro Technologies, CTS, Tata Elxsi, Yahoo, L&T Infotech, Motorola, National Instruments, Cisco Systems etc.

The College is approved by the AICTE, Govt. of Karnataka and is affiliated to Visweswaraiah Technological University in Belgaum. The departments are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation, New Delhi.

The college has a cosmopolitan crowd, a characteristic of the Bangalore city and admits students from all over India.

Ranking

RVCE is the highest ranked college in VTU, Karnataka and a very coveted engineering college in the CET through which students are given admission to colleges in Karnataka. The college leads the list in IT related education as per the ranking by The Board for Information Technology Education Standards (BITES) set up by the Government of Karnataka. The college is considered on the top ranked colleges of India and has also appeared in National News Channels for its Placement Records.

Academics

RVCE is a center for academic excellence and its students have been consistently acheiving top ranks in the university. The college has a very competetive student population as a result of its preference in the CET examinations. Students have achieved high ranks in all branches of engineering that are offered in the college. The academic excellence has ensured the college a firm position as the top engineering college in Bangalore for more than a decade.

Student life

The college also hosts a large number of department fairs to improve student interaction. A new construction drive is bringing advanced facilities to the college on-par with worldwide standards. The college has a vibrant hostel culture which is reminiscent of the IITs with its own ritualistic "buddy-life". A recent surge in the demand for hostel rooms is sending out-of-station students across the neighbourhood of the college area where they live in groups. The institution has actively tried to impose a "ban" on the ragging or hazing of freshman students by the seniors. The college doesn't allow student bodies or unions. In the past years a few strikes in response to the college management's stance on the implementation of a strict dress code and moral policing have occurred simultaneously with what the students consider an over-authoritative pinch. A newly built state-of-the-art computer-commons lab provides students access to the Internet. But again censorship and IP policing by the college authorities have left the students feeling short-changed, as in the ban of usage of applications like MSN/Yahoo messengers. The college actively blocks websites with social motifs too, much to the inconvenience of the students. Though the management maintains that this is only to ensure students do not get carried away from their main objective - building engineering careers. But a new LAN system across the hostels has ensured a sort of college database of music and also multi-player gaming that is adding to the fun of staying in the hostels.

The RV Work-Play culture

While engineering hostels have been synonymous with drug-culture, RVCE has the dubious distinction of probably being the finest party school in the system while still being the best merit-wise. Some explain it to the attitudes of the conglomeration of open-minded sub-urban youth from across the country, others would call it the "Work hard, party harder" ethic. But all this is pushing the college into the forefront of Bangalore's "neo-counterculture movement". Bangalore happens to be one of India's most liberal city likewise. A sharp rise in drug usage across education centres across the city has been concurrent with the rising confidence of an urban India, more so in Bangalore. RVCE is no stranger to this, where the hostel-life is literally referred to as a hedonist-paradise sometimes. The management has been at odds to curb the spread of narcotics on campus. Punishments have been severe in recent years ranging from removal or eventual debarrment. The college also lies close to the Bangalore University Jnanabharati campus on the Mysore Road around which is, according to city police, one of the biggest hotspots for marijuana and charas distribution networks in South India.

RV School of Architecture

The Department of Architecture is now an autonomous body with major freedom in setting course work standards. R V School of Architecture is widely recognised as the best facility to pursue a Bachelor's in Architecture degree in the whole of Southern India. This dramatic rise in stature over a period of a decade is often equated to the efforts of its mentor Prof K Anantha Krishna, a rebel-educationist-architect who is recognised across the management and student body as a tough taskmaster but a good career guide, although sometimes in a controversial way. The school is famous for trying to bring in a more complex and practical approach to its design syllabus. Efforts to start an active student-exchange program between students in Germany and Sri Lanka are in place. The school hosts talks and seminars by a number of leading and innovative architects and designers from across the world quite frequently.
