Kumar Malavalli (born February 9th, 1943) is a noted techonology entrepreneur and philanthropist,[1] [2] with specific interests in education [3] and healthcare[4].

Kumar is the co-author and driving force behind Fibre Channel, an evolutionary technology that enabled the development of production-class storage area networks (SAN's). Co-founder and former CTO of Brocade Communications; Co-founder, Chairman and CSO of InMage Systems; and CSO of LeadForce1.

Early Life and Education

Kumar, whose last name Malavalli is a village in Karnataka's Mandya district was born in Mysore. He is the son of Sri M.S Narayanaswamy, Retired Deputy Commissioner and mother, Smt. Indiramma Narayanaswamy.

He often spent his younger days listening and singing to The Beatles with his two younger brothers, Prof. Shivaram Malavalli and Dr. Seetharam Malavalli.

Kumar attended Mysore's distinguished National Institute of Engineering (also alma mater of Infosys's N.R. Narayana Murthy) and gained two degrees, one in Physics and another in Engineering.

In 1971, Kumar went on to marry a local girl from Chamarajanagar and immediately moved to Germany training in Advanced Industrial Electronics at the Institute of Engineering, Dusseldorf. He later returned to Mysore for a short period but in 1974 he migrated to Canada with his wife and daughter.

Career

He worked in HP for nearly two decades before summoning up the courage to hit the digital trail on his own.

He is considered one of the originators and the driving force behind Fibre Channel, an evolutionary technology that enabled the development of storage area networks (SAN's), which lead to a multi-billion dollar industry.

He was Chairman of the ANSI INCITS T11 Technical Committee in 1994, when it developed the Fibre Channel specification. He was the co-founder and Chairman of FCIA (Fibre Channel Industry Association), and was a founder and Chairman of SNIA (Storage Networking Industry Association). Both of these organizations serve the storage industry as the primary technical and marketing resource for Fibre Channel.

In 1995, Kumar co-founded Brocade Communications Systems, the leader in storage area switching. He is also the chairman and co-founder of Orchesys, Inc. Orchesys is a technology solutions company with its roots as a storage services provider to major vendors such as NetApp and Hitachi Data Systems since 2005.

Kumar Malavalli continues to be an investor and mentor and the member of the board of numerous Silicon Valley startups in the field of Information Technology and in other emerging areas of Telemedicine,Business Analytics, Intent Analysis, Cloud Computing and Nanotechnology.

He is currently the chairman and CSO of data protection specialist InMage Systems. InMage founders are Rajeev Atluri, Anup Tirumala, Sam Inala, Srihari Kumar, and NS Rao. InMage Systems pioneered the concepts of event based recovery and continuous data protection.

He is the chairman of leading edge data security solution provider CryptoMill Technologies. Other CryptoMill founders include Nandini Jolly (CEO), and Daniel Thanos (CTO). CryptoMill has pioneered the development of a three element data security solution based on; Protection (Data Encryption), Control (Data Firewall) and Containment (Data Binding). The solution named SEAhawk; provides the industries first cryptographic data storage firewall that provides internal data security above and beyond just the external data security other solutions provide.

Kumar Malavalli is also the Chief Strategy officer of a next-generation marketing automation solutions provider, LeadForce1. LeadForce1 founders are Srihari Kumar, Shreesha Ramdas and Sushil Jha. LeadForce1 is the first provider of Marketing Automation 2.0 solutions. Its real-time solution delivers enriched lead data, enabling enterprise sales and marketing teams to uncover hidden opportunities, accurately identify decision-makers, and deliver powerful, targeted, real-time responses to qualified prospects.

In 2003, the Silicon Valley Engineering Council (SVEC) recognized Kumar Malavalli's contributions to technology and society by inducting him into the Silicon Valley Engineering Hall of Fame.

In 2005, he established an Endowed Professorship at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
