Florence and the Machine

Florence and the Machine (often stylised as Florence + the Machine)[1] is the recording name of English pop[2] artist Florence Welch and a collaboration of other artists who provide backing music for her voice. Florence and the Machine's sound has been described as a combination of various genres, including rock and soul.[3] The band's music has received praise across the music media before they gained mainstream success, especially from the BBC who played a large part in Florence and the Machine's rise to prominence by promoting her as part of BBC Introducing.[4]

The band's debut album, Lungs was released on 6 July 2009, and held the No. 2 position for its first five weeks in the UK Album Chart.[5] On 17 January 2010, the album reached No. 1 on the UK album chart, having remained in the chart for 28 consecutive weeks up until that point.[6] The album has been within the top 40 in the United Kingdom for 58 consecutive weeks, making it one of the best selling albums of 2009 and 2010 so far. At the 2010 BRIT Awards, Lungs won the "Mastercard British Album" award.[7] Florence and the Machine performed at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.

Florence Welch

Florence Leontine Mary Welch (born 28 August 1986 in London) is the daughter of Evelyn Welch, a Harvard-educated Professor of Renaissance Studies and Academic Dean of Arts at Queen Mary University of London[8] and Nick Welch.

Nick, an advertising executive contributed (according to Q) a "rock and roll element to the family mix". In his 20s he used to live in the West End squat and attended the Squatters' Ball organized by Heathcote Williams where The 101ers played regularly. Himself a self-confessed "frustrated performer", it was Nick who, as he put it, "nudged Flo in any way it's onlу been to listen to The Ramones rather than Green Day".[9] Evelyn Welch had equally strong, even if completely different influence on her daughter. A visit to one of her mother's lectures left teenage Florence deeply impressed. "I aspire to something like that but with music. I hope that my music has some of the big themes - sex, death, love, violence - that will still be part of the human story in 200 years' time", she said years later, in 2010.[9]

Florence was educated at Alleyn's School, South East London where she did well academically.[10] Welch often got in trouble in school for impromptu singing.[10] Welch has been diagnosed with dyslexia and dysmetria,[11] and believes she also suffers from insomnia.[10] Upon leaving school, Florence studied at Camberwell College of Arts before dropping out to focus on her music.[10]

Welch's fascination with terror and doom was intensified by the death of her grandparents within a few years of each other. At the age 10 Welch witnessed her grandfather's deterioration, and her maternal grandmother, also an art historian, committed suicide when Welch was 14.[10]

When Welch was 13 years old her mother moved in with her next door neighbour and his three teenage children. According to Welch: "We get on brilliantly now, but it was a nightmare then. I just used to stay in my room and dance around.[12]

Welch contributed vocals to the David Byrne and Fatboy Slim 2010 album Here Lies Love, an album about Imelda Marcos.[13]

Welch has been dating boyfriend Stuart Hammond since 2008, their temporary split provided inspiration for much of the Lungs album.[14]

In August 2010, Welch revealed that Libertines lead singer Pete Doherty has proposed to her but she politely declined.[15][unreliable source?]

Backing band

The Machine is the name attributed to Welch's backing band, composed mostly of session musicians, who differ dependent on Welch's requirements when performing.[16] Originally however it arose from her teenage collaboration with Isabella "Machine" Summers. Welch and Summers performed together for a time under the name Florence Robot/Isa Machine. Later, this was shortened to Florence and the Machine as it was felt to be too cumbersome. Welch continued using this name for her band even when Summers parted company with her for a time, although Summers later returned to become her regular keyboard player.[10]

Like most solo singers, Welch relies on a regular line up of musicians to support her in live shows. The current line up includes session musicians Robert Ackroyd on guitar, Chris Hayden on drums, Isabella Summers on keyboard, Mark Saunders on bass and Tom Monger on harp. In the past Welch has praised the Machine for understanding her creative process, claiming "I’ve worked with most of them for a long time and they know my style, know the way I write, they know what I want.”[16]

History

Early years

According to Welch, "The name Florence and the Machine started off as a private joke that got out of hand. I made music with my friend, who we called Isabella Machine to which I was Florence Robot. When I was about an hour away from my first gig, I still didn't have a name, so I thought "Okay, I'll be Florence Robot/Isa Machine", before realizing that name was so long it'd drive me mad".[10][17] In 2006 Welch's performances with Isabella Summers in small London venues under the joint name Florence Robot/Isa Machine began to attract notice.[citation needed]

In 2007, Florence recorded with a band named Ashok, who released an album entitled "Plans" on the Filthy Lucre/About Records label. This album included the earliest version of her later hit "Kiss With a Fist", which at this point was entitled "Happy Slap".[citation needed]

Florence and the Machine are managed by Mairead Nash, who decided to manage the singer when an inebriated Welch followed Nash into the toilets at a club[10][11] and sang the Etta James song, "Something's Got A Hold On Me".[18]

Lungs (2008 - present)

Florence and the Machine released their debut album Lungs in the United Kingdom on 6 July 2009.[19] The album was officially launched with a set at the Rivoli Ballroom in Brockley, South East London. The album has peaked at the number 1 position in the UK and the number 13 position in Europe. As of 6 August 2009 the album had sold over 100,000 copies in the UK and by 10 August it had been at the number 2 position for five consecutive weeks.[20][21] Following its 25 July 2009 release for download in the United States the album debuted at the number 17 position on the Billboard "Heatseekers" chart.[22] The album was released physically in the U.S. on 20 October by Island Records.[23] The album was produced by James Ford, Paul Epworth, Steve Mackey and Charlie Hugall.[24] Much of the material on the album was written as reaction to what turned out to be a temporary break-up with Welch's current boyfriend. Welch says "He prefers me not to talk about it. It's funny then singing about it."[20]

The debut single for the album was "Kiss with a Fist" and featured on the soundtrack for the film Wild Child , Jennifer's Body[25] and in the "Looks Like a Lesbian Attack to Me" episode of the television series of "Saving Grace." The follow-up single, "Dog Days Are Over", was recorded with no instruments in a studio the "size of a loo".[26] This song was used in opening of USA network's new spy thriller Covert Affairs pilot and commercials for same.[27] It also appeared in the British television series Skins, as well as the trailer for the summer 2010 movie starring Julia Roberts, Eat, Pray, Love.[citation needed]

The third single from the album was "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)". Part of the song's melody, as well as the lyric "How quickly the glamour fades" were lifted from New York band Gang Gang Dance's song House Jam without credit on Lungs liner notes. Members of group noticed this and brought it to the attention of Florence and The Machine's label. Island Records acknowledged infringement and agreed to pay Gang Gang Dance a share of the song's publishing royalties. Welch agreed that she erred and said her intent was to pay homage.[28][29]

After the release of Lungs, the singles "Drumming Song"[30] and Candi Staton[31] cover "You've Got The Love"[32] were released, the latter of which also went on to become part of a mash-up entitled "You Got the Dirtee Love" between Welch and British rapper, Dizzee Rascal. The two performed the mash-up together at the 2010 BRIT Awards and the recorded performance was subsequently released as a single the following day.[33][34]

In January 2010, "Hurricane Drunk" was originally announced as the next single from the album.[35] However, on 3 March a re-release of "Dog Days Are Over", the opening track from Lungs, was announced on the band's website. "Dog Days are Over" provides the background music for the Eat, Pray, Love trailer. The single will be released digitally on 11 April 2010, on 7" vinyl the following day and will have a new video released to coincide.[36]

"Cosmic Love" has been confirmed to be the 7th and final single from Florence's debut album "Lungs", with a music video having already been shot.[37] This song has already appeared in many television shows including American hit shows such as The Vampire Diaries, Greys Anatomy,[38] V, and So You Think You Can Dance.[39]

Second album

In NME Magazine, dated 20 March 2010, Welch revealed further details about her second album. She confirmed she had been in the studio for "a two-week stint with producer Paul Epworth" She claims that much of the inspiration for the second album has been scientific because "a lot of her family are doctors or trying to become doctors, so much of her conversations are fixated on medical stuff." The stint in the studio resulted in two tracks being completed and a new sound being discovered, she revealed that one track that will feature on the album is called "Strangeness and Charm", which she describes as "7 minutes long and relentless". She debuted "Strangeness and Charm" on May 2, 2010 in The Olympia Theatre, Dublin during her Cosmic Love Tour. Florence described the new sound as "dancey, but it's also dark as well" she explained that they also featured "relentless drums and heavy, droning bass." The album is due out in 2011.[40]

On 28 April she told the BBC that the album is "ages away from finished" and that lyrical themes on the album will be less Gothic horror and more chemical. There is a song "Spectrum" "which has a lot to do with rainbows and prisms"[41]

Florence and the Machine are scheduled to go into the studio in October 2010 to work on the album. The album will be an "eclectic mix" of styles and will feature less "blood and guts".[42]

Other Music

On 12 May, it was announced that Florence and the Machine would provide a track called "Heavy in Your Arms" for the soundtrack to The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the third film in The Twilight Saga.[43]

Performances

Florence and the Machine burst onto the London scene playing a handful of gigs in and around London for the likes of The Lock Tavern, Blue Flowers and Filthy Few.[citation needed] In 2007, the band also performed at the debut year of the 1-2-3-4 Shoreditch Festival, performing alongside LightSpeed Champion on the MySpace Main Stage which was hosted by manager Nash's DJ double act, Queens of Noize.[11][44]

The BBC played a large part in Florence and the Machine's rise to prominence by promoting her as part of BBC Introducing.[4] This led to her playing music festivals in 2008, including Glastonbury as well as Reading and Leeds and T in the Park.[citation needed]

Florence and the Machine were part of the 2009 Shockwaves NME Awards tour. Welch said that she planned a "pretty theatrical" performance. [citation needed]

The group played the Concerts for Teenage Cancer Trust charity event at the Royal Albert Hall in March 2009.[45] Florence and The Machine supported Blur for their 26 June comeback performance at the MEN Arena in Manchester.[46] They played at the Lovebox festival this July 18 and 19. In July 2009, the group was supporting Duran Duran.[17]

The group performed at the 2009 Glastonbury Festival, Reading and Leeds festival, Electric Picnic in County Laois, Ireland (for the second consecutive year) and the T in the Park festival.[47][48]

Florence and the Machine played at Australia's Splendour In The Grass music festival in July 2010. The group drew one of the biggest crowds of the three day festival. They performed in the natural open air amphitheater, which had to be closed off by security due to safety concerns as an unprecedented number of festival go-ers rushed to see the performance. It is estimated that 28000 people of the 33000 people that attended the festival crammed in to see Florence and the Machine. The amphitheater was reopened shortly after the start, once the safety fear was over.[49]

In October 2009, the band's equipment and instruments were caught in a trailer fire during their European tour, forcing the band to use rented instruments to complete their remaining shows.[50] Welch has stated “You could hear the harp’s strings ping in the fire. Strange sound. We recorded it and I want to use it in a song.”[51]

On 27 October 2009, Florence and the Machine played their first official gig in New York City,[52] and appeared on the television programmes The Late Show With David Letterman[53] and Jimmy Kimmel Live![54] Welch has stated although she would like to tour the United States she is fearful of becoming homesick due to the time it would take to tour the country.[55]

After the success of Lungs topping the UK Albums Chart in January 2010, seven months after the album was released, Florence and the Machine announced an eleven date UK tour "The Cosmic Love Tour" in May 2010.[56] They will be accompanied by support acts Babe Shadow and The Drums.[56][57]

Florence and the Machine have been confirmed to be performing at Oxegen 2010,[58] T in the Park 2010,[59] Roskilde Festival 2010[60] and V Festival 2010.[61][62] In March 2010 it was that confirmed that the band's first headlining festival would be Latitude 2010 and played at Primavera Sound Festival[63] having been booked the previous September before achieving their mainstream success.[64]

Florence and the Machine were scheduled to begin their "Cosmic Love" tour in Dublin, Ireland on 2 May. The group plans to debut new material during the tour.[65]

Florence also went on tour with MGMT.[citation needed]

The group played the 2010 Glastonbury Festival. The performance drew one of the biggest crowds of the day and one of the biggest in the history of The Other Stage. They debuted a new song Strangeness And Charm and covered Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” during their ten song set.[66] They also played Isle of Wight Festival 2010 main stage[citation needed] Florence + the Machine will also be performing in New Orleans, LA, on Halloween weekend 2010 in historic City Park for VooDoo Fest.

Florence and Dizzee Rascal's performance of a mash-up version of Florence's single "You've Got the Love", titled "You've Got the Dirtee Love" at the 2010 Brit Awards was described as "the highlight of the evening". This collaboration was released as a charity single the following day and peaked at number 2 in the UK charts.[67] She reprised the perfomrance when she joined Dizzee Rascal on stage during his performance at the Glastonbury Festival.[68] Florence appeared at the 2010 MTV VMAs on 12 September 2010, performing "Dog Days Are Over".[69]

Critical reception

In early 2008 Welch was interviewed by London events website, Run-Riot.com.[11] Florence and the Machine collected the Critics' Choice Award at the 2009 BRIT Awards after coming third in the BBC's Sound of 2009.[70] As well as attention from the BBC, Welch received significant support from NME magazine who included her in their annual NME Awards Tour for 2009, in which she supported White Lies, Friendly Fires and Glasvegas on the tour.

The Times described her as "the most peculiar and most highly acclaimed female singer of the moment" and "the latest in a line of great English pop eccentrics".[10] Allmusic described Lungs as "one of the most musically mature and emotionally mesmerizing albums of 2009".[71] Spin Magazine gave Lungs four out of five stars and wrote, "You’ve gotta hand it to the girl: She always makes you feel something".[72] The magazine named the album as the 8th best of 2009.[73]

Florence and the Machine won the "Mastercard British Album" award at the 2010 BRIT Awards for Lungs,[74] having also been nominated for the "British Female Solo Artist"' and "British Breakthrough Act" awards.[75] On 19 February 2010, Florence and the Machine won "Best International Band" at the 2010 Meteor Awards.[76] The group is up for four 2010 MOJO Awards the most of any act.[77]
