"You Lost Me"
Song

"You Lost Me" is a song by American pop recording artist Christina Aguilera, from her fourth studio album Bionic. It was released as the second official single from the album (third overall) on June 29, 2010 in the United States and will also reach European markets in September, 2010. The song is a pop ballad, and is about breaking up with one's old partner and discovering his infidelity. The song received favorable reviews from critics, who noted that the track showcases Aguilera's powerful vocals. The song failed to match the moderate success of the previous singles, by reaching only moderate peak at two Billboard's secondary charts. The accompanying music video features a series of connected vignettes highlighting a devastated Aguilera trying to deal with a doomed romance. Aguilera promoted the song with a series of live perfomances, including the finale of the 9th season of American Idol, all before being released as a single instead.[1]

Background

On June 22, 2010 Aguilera confirmed that the new single from her new album to be taken "You Lost Me".[2] The song is co-written by Australian soul-pop singer Sia Furler and Samuel Dixon, and has been remixed for the single release.[2] The song was served to Mainstream/Top 40 radio on June 29, 2010, in the United States.[3][4]

Composition

The song is one of four from the album co-written by singer Aguilera, Sia Furler and Samuel Dixon.[2] Dixon also produced the song with additional vocal production by Furler. The song is set in the time signature of common time of 50 beats per minute. It is composed in the key of A minor with Christina vocal range spanning from the low-note of Eb3 to the high-note of E5.[5]

Critical reception

The song received positive reviews from critics. Leah Greenblatt from Entertainment Weekly said that " [...] while Australian chanteuse Sia, co-writing and providing backing vocals, turns Aguilera into a smoky, almost Fiona Apple-esque torch singer on the lovely sequential ballads 'All I Need', 'I Am', and 'You Lost Me'."[6] Amber James from PopEater said that "On the somber track, the singer maintains the futurism of her Bionic album while bringing the honesty and emotion that have made Aguilera one of the premier balladeers of our time." [7] Elysa Gardner from USA Today said that "On the ballads 'I Am' and 'You Lost Me', she respectively offers her soul to a lover and, after a betrayal, reclaims it, sounding as raw as an open wound."[8] Jon Pareles from The New York Times said that she barely holding back tears in “You Lost Me.”[9] Mesfin Fekadu from The Northwest Herald said that "[...] while the emotional ballad “You Lost Me,” about a cheating lover, is exceptional and showcases the diva’s powerful voice".[10] The music reporter Robert Copsey from Digital Spy gave to the song a rating of 3 out of 5 stars, saying that Aguilera "wail and belt like the true diva she is, but her performance somehow lacks the sincerity she displayed on 'Hurt' or 'Oh Mother'".[11]

Music video

Background

Aguilera in the video of "You Lost Me".

On July 9, 2010 Aguilera had revealed the details about the video and said that "the video strips back the theatrics she is known for using in her clips."[12] In an interview with VH1 she said "I love a big production and some of my elaborate makeup styles I totally get off on,". She added "But this particular song... it was really important that I interpret the simplicity of the raw emotion that takes place within the song itself and not any sort of theatrics involved."[12] About the video, she said: "You have the torn, empty mattress, the burnt up pillow cases... in the chorus whenever I say 'It feels like our world is infected'...that's exactly what we wanted to embody in the vision of the song." She explained: "I'm literally being torn. When I take my shirt off it's a moment where I'm saying 'I'm taking control of the situation, I'm shedding the skin.'"[12] The video was released on July 22, 2010 on Aguilera's official Vevo account. The video was directed by Anthony Mandler.

Concept

Anthony explained about the video: "From the first keys of the opening of the track, we know that we are about to watch something that is going to move and transform us." He adds "In the end, we've traveled through Christina's world. One that is physical, mental and spiritually charged. Nothing is what it seems. Everything is fractured and evolving, falling away... fragile,".[13]

Reception

Monica Herrera from Billboard explained the video and said " 'You Lost Me' begins with an extreme close-up of a gun barrel while Aguilera sings, "I am done, Smoking gun/We've lost it all, the love is gone." The newly strawberry-blonde star wanders through a deserted bedroom and lays down in the dirt, but like a vintage Hollywood vixen, she always remains impeccably glamorous -- even while mascara streams down her cheeks". And added "Hopefully for Aguilera, "You Lost Me" will cast those doubts aside and remind everyone of what she does best."[14]

Live performances

Aguilera performed the song numerous time before the release of song. Aguilera performed the song on Late Show with David Letterman on July 09, 2010.[15] Aguilera also performed the song on American Idol on May 26, 2010. [16] Aguilera performed the song at June 9, 2010 on Today Show, at VH1 Storytellers and on Early Show on June 11, 2010.[1]
