- January 9 - It is reported that former player Steve Staunton and Bobby Robson are to be the new managers of the Republic of Ireland football team. This report is later confirmed.
- January 16 - An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern leads an important trade mission to India.
- January 17 - The GAA, FAI and IRFU announce that a deal has been reached which will allow soccer and rugby to be played in Croke Park.
