"Coming Home"
Song

"Coming Home" is a song performed by American band Diddy-Dirty Money, released as the fifth single from their debut album Last Train to Paris. The track was written by Holly Hafferman and Shawn Carter with production by Alex da Kid, whose protégé Skylar Grey provides vocals for the chorus. It premiered on October 31, 2010 just prior to the fourth game of the Baseball World Series[1] and was released to US radio stations on November 16, 2010.

Composition

The song "opens with a simple piano intro and delicate vocals from [Skylar] Grey" while in the lyrics "[Diddy] references a different popular song in each verse".[2] The "triumphant" backing track features a beat taken from the J. Cole song, "I'm Coming Home", also produced by Alex da Kid. The lyrics reflect an overview of Diddy's life and career with lines like "What am I ‘posed to do when the club lights come on/ It’s easy to be Puff, but it’s harder to be Sean/ What if my twins ask why I ain’t married their mom?"[3] The song is personal to Diddy, referencing mistakes he has made in the past and that he wants to put hehind him. He also uses the song to tribute Notorious BIG in the line "I miss you, B.I.G."[2] MTV's Jayson Rodriguez said "Diddy do[es] some soul-searching in his rhymes as the chorus echoes his need for salvation." Diddy told Rodriguez that although the track had autobiographical elements, it was part of the album's "conceptual love story narrated by his character".[1] Diddy called the record "a gift" from Jay Z and Alex da Kid.[4]

Critical reception

A reviewer from Kansascity.com said "After more than a year of delays, has Sean 'Diddy' Combs finally found the hit that’s going to pull his group Diddy Dirty Money’s Last Train to Paris album out of the station? It looks like it. 'Coming Home' sounds like a winner in latter-day T.I. style.[5] Becky Bain of Idolator said "However, we have to give some credit to Diddy (or Jay-Z, if he did indeed write them [lyrics]) for dropping some truly introspective lyrics instead of the usual not-so-subtle Ciroq Vodka promotions.[6]

Promotion

Diddy-Dirty Money performed the song live for the first time at the 2010 American Music Awards on November 21, 2010. For the performance the group were joined on stage by a full orchestra, with Diddy dressed in all-black but the other half of the group dressed in white gowns.[7]

Music video

The accompanying music video premiered on November 29, 2010 through E!Online.[8]
