Sonipat Hindi: सोनीपत, also spelled as Sonepat, is an ancient town and a municipal council in Sonipat district in the state of Haryana, India.It comes under National Capital Region and is 34 km north of Delhi. It is believed that it was founded as Swarnaprastha by the five Pandava brothers during the times of Mahabharata. Another legend ascribed it to Raja Soni, the thirteenth descendent of Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers. [citation needed]
Geography
Sonipat is located at 28°59′N 77°01′E / 28.98°N 77.02°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 235 metres (721 feet)
Demographics
As of 2001[update] India census,[2] Sonipat district had a population of 10,45,213. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Sonipat has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 77%, and female literacy is 66%.
Legend
Sonipat was earlier known as Sonprastha, which later on became Swarnprastha, meaning the "Golden City": derived from two Sanskrit words, Swarn (Gold) and Prastha (Place). Over a period of time, the classical name Swarnprasth's pronunciation degraded into Swarnpath, and then to its current form, Sonipat.
The earliest reference of this city comes in the epic Mahabharata, and at that time, it was one of the five villages demanded by the Pandavas in lieu of the kingdom of Hastinapur.
Places of interest
Yamuna River:The river flows besides the rural belt of the city with its holy waters which turn into a Black Nullah after entering the National Capital Delhi.
This acts as a natural boundary also between state of Haryana and the state of Uttar Pradesh.
Mughal Buildings: At the outskirts of the city one can enjoy the site of Mughal Buildings which lie unprotected.

When the car company Maruti was less well known, more than 95% of India's vehicle-owning population owned a bicycle. The Hindu Senior Secondary School, New Court Road, Sonepat, was founded in 1989 as Hindu High School and had classes from VI to X only. It was recognized by the Education Department of the state and affiliated to the Haryana Board of School Education, Bhiwani. Right from the beginning, it rose from strength to strength.
The Management thought it wise to get it affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi and raise its status from High School (Secondary School) to Senior Secondary School.
