Laughter is the best form of medicine

Bland but good. Simply south...... 15:49, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If music be the food of love, play on; give me excess of it.

I was looking at today's motto, and I suddenly thought of Twelfth Night, by Shakespeare. Remembering that this is part of a famous quote by the character Duke Orsino, I thought of various parts of Wikipedia that might connect to the words. This is my first nomination here, so I don't know if it's been used before or not. Wilhelmina Will (talk) 04:54, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment - I don't understand the 'excess' link. Could you please explain that a bit? Also, I think the WP link isn't really necessary. Kayau Voting IS evil HI AGAIN 10:21, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I wanted to find something that would reflect that Wikipedia's overall content and community is constantly growing, but I couldn't find any project pages describing this. Therefore, I decided to fall back on the Statistics page, until someone could suggest a better link. And maybe the Wikipedia link was a little too much excess; I've removed that. :) Thanks! Wilhelmina Will (talk) 22:21, 8 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Done! Wilhelmina Will (talk) 00:49, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral - food is used metaphorically here, so the wikiProject link is not the best, I'm afraid. Kayau Voting IS evil 10:52, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Can you suggest a better set of links? Wilhelmina Will (talk) 10:27, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - I must agree with the others: I don't like the first few links. (Kind of rough for a first contributor to MOTD, sorry) I've been looking and can't find the links I would like, but something along the lines of "If music (research, reliable sources) be the food of love (knowledge)...." keep the last two links. Anyone know something that could be used for those? PrincessofLlyr royal court 20:00, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How is it now? I've changed the links based on Princess of Llyr's suggestion. Wilhelmina Will (talk) 10:31, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Next time, try to use different edits (more in WP:MOTD/G). If someone opposes your original and doesn't check back, they'd be opposing your new one... Support. Kayau Voting IS evil 11:24, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Almost. The love link still needs to be changed...maybe WP:NOTE? I'm almost support, except for that link. PrincessofLlyr royal court 15:14, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
WP:Reliability redirects to a page about criticisms of Wikipedia. I would think that citing sources do not add to that. I still oppose. The love link should be changed as well. Making an edit in a sub-proposal is what you should do; take a look at others on this page to see what I mean. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 01:24, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Strong oppose - for the same reason with above. Also, vandalism usually result in blocks. Kayau Voting IS evil 02:17, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak oppose - per Kayau; it's not as bad as the original though - it's just too negative. WVRMadTalkGuestbook 18:09, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - What? No! Nothing moreto say than what others have said above. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 23:45, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Careless edits costs reputations

Think twice before clicking save

My own slogan.Tyw7  (☎ Contact me! • Contributions)   Changing the world one edit at a time! 21:54, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose - No Project space links.  RichardOwen97  talk  23:31, 14 January, 2011 (UTC)
  • Oppose - Per RichardOwen97 MMS2013 00:46, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak oppose - I don't think it's much meaning here. However, it's clearly self-referential so links are not really necessary here. Kayau Voting IS evil 02:18, 15 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - I know this isn't what the message of the motto is meant to be, but to me it seems the motto is implying don't make any mistakes... or else! - whereas I think that as long as an edit was done in good faith any errors can easily be corrected and the editor notified. WVRMadTalkGuestbook 14:30, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually I was thinking of WP:VANDALISM and for WP:VANDALS to think twice before clicking save --Tyw7  (☎ Contact me! • Contributions)    Careless edits costs reputations  16:55, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I know, it's just that some people could interpret it as I did at first. WVRMadTalkGuestbook 17:52, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the world one edit at a time!

It is a play on the phrase changing the world one (something) at a time. I have used it in my sig and in WikiProject Software I changed the phrase "edit" to byte. --Tyw7  (☎ Contact me! • Contributions)   Changing the world one edit at a time! 21:32, 13 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose - Something with the same idea has been used before, as you can see here, but this one is different enough that I am fine with it. There was also another nominatiom, but it was declined, so I am not bothering to link it. However, although I am fine with using this, I think that the link is boring, and will oppose until someone can come up with a better one. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 23:34, 13 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - The present link is a bit too literal for my tastes. MMS2013 23:38, 13 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - the motto itself it OK, but if you don't compare this one and the one used before carefully one might think it's a repetition. Kayau Voting IS evil 05:27, 14 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - per above. WVRMadTalkGuestbook 14:38, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the world one edit at a time!

I would not waste my life in friction when it could be turned into momentum.

MMS2013 21:03, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Minds are conquered not by arms, but by love and magnamanity.

MMS2013 17:54, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose - Love is such a boring link... We need something new! Fresh! Exciting! :) ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 01:26, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - love is boring, but WP:OTHERUSERS is a great link and I don't think there's a link that is more appropriate than love. Let not this motto go to waste. Kayau Voting IS evil 07:19, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - wikilove is overused but I think the link for magnamanity is so good it makes up for it. WVRMadTalkGuestbook 13:56, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support and Comment - Nice motto. How about WP:CO for love if it's too boring and i believe the spelling is Magnanimity.  RichardOwen97  talk  15:05, 23 January, 2011 (UTC)
  • Support Nice motto! --Tyw7  (☎ Contact me! • Contributions)   Changing the world one edit at a time! 23:39, 27 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To interpret laws is almost always to corrupt them.

MMS2013 23:45, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support - Seems fine. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 23:48, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Weak support - seems to imply that people always use policies to their advantage, unless I'm misinterpreting the motto. Kayau Voting IS evil 00:39, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • I don't quite think that is the message; I think it's something more like "Whenever one attempts to interpret a law, they usually get it wrong." ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 02:36, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: it's incomplete, without the first part ("Let all the laws be clear, uniform and precise. To interpret laws...") the meaning becomes ambiguous. Anyway, I think I'll support it (in any form). –pjoef (talkcontribs) 09:51, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - creative. I like Pjoef's earlier part of the quote too. PrincessofLlyr royal court 15:15, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - this or the second version is fine (seeing as there isn't actually any difference). WVRMadTalkGuestbook 13:40, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To interpret laws is almost always to corrupt them.

Edit 1 - Wanted to make the last link more clear. Opinions? MMS2013 17:43, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment - 'Tis a link to the same page, my dear MMS2013. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 01:25, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Comment - I know, I just wanted to clarify that it went to BURO and not just WWIN. MMS2013 03:34, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You already had it linking to a section of it, though. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 23:27, 13 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - I don't mind which version we use, maybe this one is slightly clearer... I often use popups to quickly work out what a motto is about. The version might make it slightly quicker for people using that tool to work out, but apart from that I don't really mind - it's only 1 link. WVRMadTalkGuestbook 13:49, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
